Background: The mechanisms underlying postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) remain unclear.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that targeted chemical ganglionated plexi (GP) modulation of all major left atrial-pulmonary vein GP using novel nanoformulated calcium chloride (nCaCl) can reverse postoperative neuroelectrical remodeling by suppressing vagosympathetic nerve activity and the localized inflammatory process, both critical substrates of POAF.

Methods: In a novel canine model of POAF with serial thoracopericardiotomies, sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), vagal nerve activity (VNA) and GP nerve activity (GPNA) were recorded; spontaneous and in vivo AF vulnerability were assessed; and atrial and circulating inflammatory markers and norepinephrine (NE) were measured to determine the neuroelectrical remodeling that promotes POAF and its subsequent modulation with nCaCl GP treatment (n = 6) vs saline sham controls (n = 6).

The annual conference of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society (IFESS) was held in conjunction with the 7th RehabWeek Congress, from September 24 to 28, 2023 at the Resorts World Convention Centre on Sentosa Island, in Singapore. The Congress was a joint meeting of the International Consortium on Rehabilitation Technology (ICRT) together with 10 other societies in the field of assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering. The conference features comprehensive blend of technical and clinical context of FES, a sustained value the society has offered over many years.

After 15 months of preparation by task force chairs and teams, ISCD's 9th Position Development Conference (PDC) convened in Northbrook, IL, USA on March 28th and 29th, 2023 to approve new ISCD Official Positions in the topic areas of DXA Reporting, Follow-up BMD Testing and TBS Application and Reporting. Three teams of participants work to bring the PDC to fruition: the Steering Committee, Task Forces and Chairs, and the Expert Panel. To reach agreement on draft Official Positions, the PDC follows a scripted process with the UCLA/RAND Appropriateness Method (UCLA/RAM) as its foundation.

In chronic spinal cord injury (SCI), individuals experience dietary inadequacies complicated by an understudied research area. Our objectives were to assess (1) the agreement between methods of estimating energy requirement (EER) and estimated energy intake (EEI) and (2) whether dietary protein intake met SCI-specific protein guidelines. Persons with chronic SCI ( = 43) completed 3-day food records to assess EEI and dietary protein intake.

CPT1A-mediated fatty acid oxidation confers cancer cell resistance to immune-mediated cytolytic killing.

Although tumor-intrinsic fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) is implicated in multiple aspects of tumorigenesis and progression, the impact of this metabolic pathway on cancer cell susceptibility to immunotherapy remains unknown. Here, we report that cytotoxicity of killer T cells induces activation of FAO and upregulation of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1A (CPT1A), the rate-limiting enzyme of FAO in cancer cells. The repression of CPT1A activity or expression renders cancer cells more susceptible to destruction by cytotoxic T lymphocytes.

Electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves in the upper extremities has become a valuable tool for predicting the risk of hand deformities and rehabilitating functional grasping activities.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most prevalent cardiovascular disease characterized by atherosclerotic plaque buildup that can lead to partial or full obstruction of blood flow in the coronary arteries. Treatment for CAD involves a combination of lifestyle changes, pharmacologic therapy, and modern revascularization procedures. Beta-adrenoceptor antagonists (or beta-blockers) have been widely used for decades as a key therapy for CAD.

Studying factors that contribute to our understanding of maintaining normal energy balance are of paramount significance following spinal cord injury (SCI). Accurate determination of energy needs is crucial for providing nutritional guidance and managing the increasing prevalence of malnutrition or obesity after SCI. BMR represents 75-80 % of the total energy expenditure in persons with SCI.

Bilateral transversus abdominis plane and rectus sheath blocks with liposomal bupivacaine for patients undergoing robotic prostatectomy.

As robotic prostatectomy surgery becomes more prevalent, it is important to identify any regional techniques to optimize patient's recovery. We evaluated the effectiveness of bilateral transversus abdominis plane (TAP) and rectus sheath (RS) blocks with liposomal bupivacaine. We hypothesized that these blocks would reduce perioperative opioid use and pain scores.

Purpose: For patients with lung cancer, it is critical to provide evidence-based radiation therapy to ensure high-quality care. The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Radiation Oncology Program partnered with the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) as part of the VA Radiation Oncology Quality Surveillance to develop lung cancer quality metrics and assess quality of care as a pilot program in 2016. This article presents recently updated consensus quality measures and dose-volume histogram (DVH) constraints.

Utilization of epilepsy care among Women Veterans: A population-based study.

Objective: Higher healthcare utilization in epilepsy correlates with better clinical and quality of life outcomes. Women Veterans with epilepsy (WVE) have unique characteristics that may affect access and utilization of care. This study investigates epilepsy care in WVE, with respect to utilization of outpatient, inpatient, and emergency room care.
