Few studies have examined developmentally relevant sources of resilience, such as peer social support, among young sexual minority men (SMM) of color experiencing discrimination and mental health distress. To address this gap in the literature, we examined the role of peer social support in the association between discrimination and mental health distress in a sample of young SMM of color. Ninety-four cisgender young SMM of color (aged 16-29) were recruited through community-based organizations in the New York City metropolitan area as part of an effectiveness trial of a tailored Motivational Interviewing intervention.

Polarizability, plasmons and damping in pseudospin-1 gapped materials with a flat band.

J Phys Condens Matter

December 2024

Space Vehicles Directorate, US Air Force Research Laboratory, Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, NM 87117, United States of America.

The subject of our present investigation is the collective electronic properties of various types of pseudospin-1 Dirac-cone materials with a flat band and finite bandgaps in their low-energy spectra. Specifically, we have calculated the dynamical polarization, plasmon dispersions, as well as their decay rates due to Landau damping and presented the closed-form analytical expressions for the wave function overlaps for both the gapped dice lattice and the Lieb lattice. The gapped dice lattice is a special case of the more general-T3model such that its band structure is symmetric and the flat band remains dispersionless.

INCREASING THE ACCESSIBILITY AND RELEVANCE OF IMPLEMENTATION SCIENCE FOR FRONT-LINE IMPLEMENTERS.

J Acquir Immune Defic Syndr

December 2024

Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, USA.

Background: Implementation science has been heralded as a critical strategy for ending the HIV epidemic (EHE), and the United States (US) has made a tremendous financial investment in implementation research. However, several dynamics in its development and organization may alienate front-line implementers and recapitulate some of the same missteps that have stymied past translational work.

Setting: Increasing the accessibility and relevance of HIV implementation science for front-line implementers (e.

We aimed to characterize and conceptually organize multilevel factors associated with the sexual victimization experiences of trans women and trans feminine people to advance violence prevention interventions for health-equity. Between October 2020 and July 2021, we conducted in-depth interviews with 17 expert informants in New York City, which we transcribed, coded, and analyzed. Qualitative insights were derived through an intensive, team-based iterative coding strategy resulting in the development of an exhaustive set of consensus codes which were organized and interpreted in a multi-level structure.

The literature differentiates between two domains of machismo: traditional machismo and caballerismo. Research has largely focused on measuring machismo among English speakers. We evaluated whether Estrada's (2011) 2-factor model of machismo was invariant across languages (English versus a direct Spanish translation).

The past two decades have seen expanding interest in the application of Motivational Interviewing (MI) with couples. Thus far, literature detailing the development of MI with couples has focused primarily on elucidating counseling processes and techniques or on evaluating intervention effects. To date no published studies have examined client-perceptions of the counseling process in MI with couples.

Glaucoma is a blinding disease where the retinal ganglion cells and their axons degenerate. Degradation of axonal microtubules is thought to play a critical role in the pathogenesis, but the mechanism is unknown. Here we investigate whether microtubule disruption in glaucoma can be alleviated by metabolic rescue.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) is a transmembrane tyrosine kinase that is frequently modified by glycosylation post-translationally. In cancer, EGFR amplifications and hotspot mutations such as L858R that promote proliferation have been detected in a significant fraction of non-small cell lung carcinomas and breast adenocarcinomas. Molecular dynamic simulations suggested that glycosylation at asparagine residue 361 (N361) promotes dimerization and ligand binding.

Background: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) represent a high-risk group for HIV transmission in Romania, yet they possess few resources for prevention. Despite having no formal access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) through the health system, GBMSM in Romania demonstrate a high need for and interest in this medication. In anticipation of a national rollout of PrEP, this study tests the efficacy of a novel strategy, Prepare Romania, that combines two evidence-based PrEP promotion interventions for GBMSM living in Romania.

Primates exhibit diverse social systems that are intricately linked to their biology, behavior, and evolution, all of which influence the acquisition and maintenance of their gut microbiomes (GMs). However, most studies of wild primate populations focus on taxa with relatively large group sizes, and few consider pair-living species. To address this gap, we investigate how a primate's social system interacts with key environmental, social, and genetic variables to shape the GM in pair-living, red-bellied lemurs (Eulemur rubriventer).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore factors related to vision impairment (VI) and age-related eye disease (ARED) in older adults, along with their frequency of eye exams.
  • Conducted in March 2023, the research involved 166 adults aged 50 and older and utilized logistic regression to identify barriers to eye care services.
  • Key findings revealed that factors such as traveling more than 10 miles to see an eye care provider, facing barriers to access, and having limited exposure to eye health information significantly increased the likelihood of experiencing VI and ARED.

Objective: Substance use, including drug and alcohol misuse, is associated with myriad health conditions, including a higher risk for HIV infection. Although preliminary evidence suggests that higher levels of relationship functioning can buffer against the deleterious health consequences of discrimination on mental health broadly, such protective associations have been understudied with respect to alcohol and drug use. The topic is particularly understudied among Latino sexual minority men even though they are at greater risk for problematic substance use behaviors and are likely to experience multiple forms of discrimination (e.

Drug use and condomless sex among sexual minority men in relationships: Whether relationship quality is a risk or protective factor depends upon what they believe their partners do.

Soc Sci Med

June 2024

Department of Psychology, Hunter College of the City University of New York, New York, NY, USA; Doctoral Program in Health Psychology and Clinical Science, Graduate Center of the City University of New York, New York, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Sexual minority male (SMM) couples tend toward behavioral similarity around cannabis use, illicit drug use, and sex with casual partners. Similarity in these behaviors may contextualize associations with relationship quality. This study tested the hypotheses that perceptions of partner (cannabis and illicit) drug use and sexual behavior would predict personal drug use and sexual behavior as well as moderate the association between relationship quality and these health outcomes.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) caused more deaths in 2017 than breast cancer, prostate, and brain cancers combined. This is primarily due to their aggressive metastatic nature, leading to more fatal rates of cancer patients. Despite this condition, there are no clinically approved drugs that can target metastasis.

Selective deforestation and exposure of African wildlife to bat-borne viruses.

Commun Biol

April 2024

School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Pathobiological Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1656 Linden Drive, Madison, WI, USA.

Proposed mechanisms of zoonotic virus spillover often posit that wildlife transmission and amplification precede human outbreaks. Between 2006 and 2012, the palm Raphia farinifera, a rich source of dietary minerals for wildlife, was nearly extirpated from Budongo Forest, Uganda. Since then, chimpanzees, black-and-white colobus, and red duiker were observed feeding on bat guano, a behavior not previously observed.

Cadherin-17 as a target for the immunoPET of adenocarcinoma.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

July 2024

Department of Chemistry, Hunter College of the City University of New York, 413 East 69th Street, New York, NY, 10021, USA.

Purpose: Cadherin-17 (CDH17) is a calcium-dependent cell adhesion protein that is overexpressed in several adenocarcinomas, including gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. High levels of CDH17 have been linked to metastatic disease and poor prognoses in patients with these malignancies, fueling interest in the protein as a target for diagnostics and therapeutics. Herein, we report the synthesis, in vitro validation, and in vivo evaluation of a CDH17-targeted Zr-labeled immunoPET probe.
