Background: Fewer minoritized patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) receive kidney transplantation (KT); efforts to mitigate disparities have thus far failed. Pinpointing the specific stage(s) within the transplant care continuum (being informed of KT options, joining the waiting list, to receiving KT) where disparities emerge among each minoritized population is pivotal for achieving equity. We therefore quantified racial and ethnic disparities across the KT care continuum.

Sleep is a major health issue for young adults. While sleep hygiene interventions have small-to-moderate effects, better outcomes might be achieved by delivering interventions individually to those reporting sleep difficulties, or in the presence of a supportive other or companion. To examine the feasibility, acceptability, and initial effects of an adapted sleep hygiene intervention for young adults with poor sleep, we conducted an ORBIT Phase IIb pilot randomized controlled trial (n = 51).

We aimed to characterize and conceptually organize multilevel factors associated with the sexual victimization experiences of trans women and trans feminine people to advance violence prevention interventions for health-equity. Between October 2020 and July 2021, we conducted in-depth interviews with 17 expert informants in New York City, which we transcribed, coded, and analyzed. Qualitative insights were derived through an intensive, team-based iterative coding strategy resulting in the development of an exhaustive set of consensus codes which were organized and interpreted in a multi-level structure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the dynamic role of estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) in breast cancer, particularly in the process of mRNA 3' end processing, which affects gene expression after transcription.
  • It reveals that ERα activates the enzyme poly(A) specific ribonuclease (PARN) in collaboration with the tumor suppressor p53, enhancing its role in mRNA processing.
  • The research identifies shared mRNA targets between ERα and PARN related to cell invasion and metastasis, suggesting a novel way ERα influences gene expression beyond traditional transcriptional mechanisms, contributing to breast cancer progression.

Protein translation is globally downregulated under stress conditions. Many proteins that are synthesized under stress conditions use a cap-independent translation initiation pathway. A subset of cellular mRNAs that encode for these proteins contain stable secondary structures within their 5'UTR, and initiate cap-independent translation using elements called cap-independent translation enhancers or internal ribosome entry sites within their 5'UTRs.

Adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) is essential for the effective management of HIV, which includes keeping the HIV viral load undetectable. This study aimed to determine whether certain ART medications are more "forgiving" of poor adherence in achieving viral suppression. We identified subgroups of ART medication usage and determined the extent to which ART adherence is associated with viral suppression across those subgroups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines two types of machismo: traditional machismo and caballerismo, primarily focusing on how these concepts are understood differently in English and Spanish.
  • Researchers assessed whether a previously established 2-factor model of machismo remains consistent across languages through a survey with English (428 respondents) and Spanish speakers (102 respondents).
  • Results showed that while the model fit for English speakers, Spanish speakers revealed a new 3-factor structure, introducing "inherent machismo," which relates to Internalized Heterosexism, highlighting cultural variations in understanding machismo and the need for appropriate assessment tools in Spanish.

Older women living with HIV are an especially vulnerable population due to their experience of multiple stigmas resulting from intersectional identities. Using an intersectional convoy model to conceptualize social relations, we consider how HIV-related stigma, age, gender, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic position shape access to support resources through personal networks. We briefly review existing research on how intersecting identities and structural inequities might influence the structure, composition, and function of support networks among older people with HIV.

Clear speech, a speaking style used to mitigate communicative circumstances affecting the transmission or decoding of speech signal, often involves the enhancement of language-specific phonological contrasts, including laryngeal contrasts. This study investigates the role of language dominance in the implementation of language-specific laryngeal contrasts in L2 clear speech. Two groups of Korean-English speakers (L1 Korean) were tested: a relatively less Korean-dominant L2-immersed group of sequential bilinguals ( = 30) and a strongly Korean-dominant L1-immersed group ( = 30), with dominance assessed based on the results of the Bilingual Language Profile.
