Purpose: To analyze the outcomes of the iStent inject in a real-world clinical setting as a standalone procedure to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) in open-angle glaucoma.
Materials And Methods: Patients with open-angle glaucoma having undergone iStent inject insertion without concurrent cataract extraction were included in this multicenter observational real-world study in Australia. Patient data was entered into the Fight Glaucoma Blindness! Registry.
Age-related cataracts is a highly prevalent eye disorder that results in the clouding of the crystalline lens and is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness. The disease is influenced by multiple factors including genetics, prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation, and a history of diabetes. However, the extent to which each of these factors contributes to the development of cataracts remains unclear.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common chromosomal disorder in humans. DS is associated with increased prevalence of several ocular sequelae, including characteristic blue-dot cerulean cataract. DS is accompanied by age-dependent accumulation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) amyloid-β (Aβ) peptides and amyloid pathology in the brain and comorbid early-onset Aβ amyloidopathy and colocalizing cataracts in the lens.

Aim: To describe the efficacy and safety of iStent implantation prior to phacoemulsification in manual as well as femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), and highlight this approach as a reasonable, if not necessary, step to advance one's ability and confidence in the use of microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) technology in phakic patients.
Methods: A retrospective consecutive case series of patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension who underwent iStent inject implantation followed by cataract surgery (manual or FLACS). All cases underwent postoperative video review and were assessed and classified for intraoperative lens injury and hyphaema.

Purpose: The Laser in Glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension (LiGHT) Trial has shown selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) to be clinically and cost-effective as a primary treatment of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) at 3 years. This article reports health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and clinical effectiveness of initial treatment with SLT compared with intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering eye drops after 6 years of treatment.
Design: Prospective, multicenter randomized controlled trial.

Purpose: To assess the visual outcomes and quality of vision of patients receiving the AcrySof IQ Vivity™ non-diffractive extended vision intraocular lens (NDEV IOL) after uneventful cataract surgery when the non-dominant eye is targeted for slight myopia.
Design: Single site, prospective, single-arm study.
Methods: Eligible subjects interested in reducing their dependence on spectacles over a range of working distances were enrolled and followed for 3 months after the second eye surgery.

Background: The prevalence of myopia is increasing globally including in Europe and parts of Asia but Australian data are lacking. This study aim described the change in myopia prevalence in middle-aged Australian adults over approximately a 20-year period.
Methods: Two contemporary Western Australian studies (conducted in mid-late 2010s): the coastal-regional Busselton Healthy Ageing Study (BHAS) and the urban Gen1 of the Raine Study (G1RS) were compared to two earlier studies (early-mid 1990s) in Australia: the urban Blue Mountains Eye Study (BMES) and urban/regional Melbourne Visual Impairment Project (MVIP).

Congenital cataracts are one of the major causes of childhood-onset blindness around the world. Genetic diagnosis provides benefits through avoidance of unnecessary tests, surveillance of extraocular features, and genetic family information. In this study, we demonstrate the value of genome sequencing in improving diagnostic yield in congenital cataract patients and families.

Purpose: This multicenter study evaluated 2-year effectiveness and safety following implantation of two second-generation trabecular micro-bypass stents (iStent ) with phacoemulsification.
Materials And Methods: This was a retrospective study of iStent implantation with phacoemulsification by nine surgeons across Australia. Eyes had mild to advanced glaucoma (predominantly primary open-angle/POAG, appositional angle-closure/ACG, or normal-tension/NTG) or ocular hypertension (OHT), and cataract.

Aim: This pilot study evaluates the safety and efficacy of a novel surgical technique using fibrin glue to treat bleb dysesthesia post-trabeculectomy due to intrapalpebral extension.
Background: Trabeculectomy remains the gold standard for control of intraocular pressure (IOP) in refractory glaucoma. Bleb dysesthesia following antifibrotic-enhanced trabeculectomy is common, resulting in a significant decrease in quality of life.

Purpose: This review discusses the etiology and pathogenesis of myopia, prevention of disease progression and worsening axial elongation, and emerging myopia treatment modalities.
Introduction: Pediatric myopia is a public health concern that impacts young children worldwide and is associated with numerous future ocular diseases such as cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment and other chorioretinal abnormalities. While the exact mechanism of myopia of the human eye remains obscure, several studies have reported on the role of environmental and genetic factors in the disease development.

Oxysterols are molecules derived by the oxidation of cholesterol and can be formed either by auto-oxidation, enzymatically or by both processes. Among the oxysterols formed by auto-oxidation, 7-ketocholesterol and 7β-hydroxycholesterol are the main forms generated. These oxysterols, formed endogenously and brought in large quantities by certain foods, have major cytotoxic properties.

Precis: When compared with outcomes by glaucoma specialists in several prospective studies, residents at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center achieved comparable reductions in intraocular pressure (IOP) and failure rates during the year following Baerveldt drainage device implantation.
Purpose: To review the outcomes of resident performed Baerveldt implantation through 1 year of postoperative management in a resident-run clinic.
Materials And Methods: The medical records of all veterans at the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center were searched to identify those with Baerveldt implantation by resident physicians from July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2017.

Introduction: This real-world retrospective case series assessed 12-month effectiveness and safety following implantation of iStent or iStent inject trabecular micro-bypass with cataract surgery.
Methods: Consecutive patients were implanted with either iStent (comprising 1 stent) or iStent inject (comprising 2 stents), together with cataract surgery. Most patients had primary open-angle glaucoma.

Background: The obesity-cataract association has been inconsistently reported. The fat mass and obesity-related (FTO) single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs9939609 is a major SNP associated with obesity and has been used as an instrumental variable for obesity in a Mendelian randomization (MR) approach. An interaction between the FTO SNP and macronutrient intake for obesity was suggested previously.

Importance: Pharmaceutical products, including unused portions, may contribute to financial and environmental costs in the United States. Because cataract surgery is performed millions of times each year in the United States and throughout the rest of the world, understanding these financial and environmental costs associated with cataract surgery is warranted.
Objective: To investigate the financial and environmental costs of unused pharmaceutical products after phacoemulsification surgery.

Background: Newly diagnosed open-angle glaucoma (OAG) and ocular hypertension (OHT) are habitually treated with intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering eyedrops. Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a safe alternative to drops and is rarely used as first-line treatment.
Objectives: To compare health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in newly diagnosed, treatment-naive patients with OAG or OHT, treated with two treatment pathways: topical IOP-lowering medication from the outset (Medicine-1st) or primary SLT followed by topical medications as required (Laser-1st).
