Fruiting bodies of (CC) have been reported to have a therapeutic effect in chronic kidney disease. Due to the rare and expensive resources from natural habitats, artificially cultivated mycelia using submerged liquid cultivation of CC (CCM) have been recently developed as an alternative to scarce sources of CC. However, little is known regarding potential protective effects of CCM against cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced acute nephrotoxicity in vivo and in vitro.

Background/aim: The clinical hazard of prostate cancer development after five-alpha reductase inhibitors (5ARI) treatment among benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) patients is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological features of BPH patients treated in a single institute to identify risk factors associated with prostate cancer development.

Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients who were diagnosed with BPH and received alpha blockers (AB) only or 5ARI between January 2007 and December 2012 and followed up until death or December 2020.

Hyperuricemic nephropathy (HN) is caused by urate crystals that get deposited in the kidney and contribute to renal fibrosis. Uric acid (UA) has been proven to directly cause renal mesangial cell oxidative stress and fibrosis in the pathogenesis of HN. Some antioxidants can be used as chemopreventive agents of HN.

Prenatal and postnatal exposure to PM and the risk of tic disorders.

Paediatr Perinat Epidemiol

March 2023

Department of Occupational Safety and Health, College of Public Health, China Medical University, Taichung, Taiwan R.O.C.

Article Synopsis
  • Tic disorders are common neurodevelopmental issues in children, and the study explores whether exposure to particulate matter (PM2.5) during pregnancy and infancy affects their risk of developing these disorders.
  • A significant birth cohort study in Taiwan found that higher exposure to PM2.5 is linked with increased rates of tic disorders, particularly between 6-52 weeks after birth, with specific increases in risk noted for Tourette's disorder.
  • The researchers utilized advanced statistical models to analyze data from over 300,000 births and concluded that exposure to PM2.5 poses a risk, prompting the need for further research in this area.

Gastroprotective Effect of on Aspirin-Induced Gastric Ulcer in Mice.

Antioxidants (Basel)

November 2022

Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences, College of Medicine, Chang Gung University, Taoyuan 33302, Taiwan.

Gastric ulcers are commonly seen in the upper gastrointestinal tract and may be related to the infection and the use of aspirin, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Typically, proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are used to treat gastric ulcers; however, adverse effects have emerged following long-term treatment. Natural medicines are used as alternative therapeutic agents in the treatment of gastric ulcers, with few side effects.

Movement pattern and upper extremity muscle activation during fast and slow continuous steering movement.

Hum Mov Sci

February 2023

Department of Occupational Therapy & Graduate Institute of Behavioral Sciences, College of Medicine, Chang Gung University, Taoyuan, Taiwan; Department of Neurology and Dementia Center, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital at Taoyuan, Taoyuan, Taiwan. Electronic address:

Continuous steering movement (CSM) is an essential component of the upper extremity (UE) task during vehicle driving, and could be a suitable candidate for multi-joint rehabilitation programs for patients with UE disabilities. This study aims to evaluate the UE muscle activation during CSM and how the rotating speed and direction affect CSM's kinematic and kinetic performance. Surface electromyography (EMG), hand contact information, and steering torque were measured under fast (180°/s) and slow (60°/s) constant-velocity CSM to reveal the activation of shoulder and elbow muscles, temporal characteristics, and force exertion during the stance and swing phases of a CSM cycle.

Background: To evaluate the prognostic impact of lymph node dissection (LND) in patients who underwent radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) with bladder cuff excision (BCE) for clinically node-negative (cN0) upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC).

Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 520 patients with cN0 UTUC in a single tertiary referral center from 2000 to 2015. The patients were divided into three groups: patients with and without pathologically proved lymph node metastasis (pN1-3 and pN0, respectively) and patients without LND (pNx).

Application of Edge Computing in Structural Health Monitoring of Simply Supported PCI Girder Bridges.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2022

China Engineering Consultants, Inc., Floor 28, No. 185, Section 2, Sinhai Road Da-an Dist., Taipei City 106, Taiwan.

This study proposes an innovative method for structural health monitoring of simply supported PCI girder bridges based on dynamic strain and edge computing. Field static and dynamic load tests were conducted on a bridge consisting of a span with newly replaced PCI girders and numerous spans with old PCI girders. Both the static and dynamic test results showed that the flexural rigidity of the old PCI girders decreased significantly due to deterioration.

Extracellular Vesicles Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Attenuate Mast Cell Activation.

Antioxidants (Basel)

November 2022

Department of Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, College of Medicine, China Medical University, Taichung 404333, Taiwan.

The therapeutic potential of extracellular vesicles isolated from stem cells have been reported in several clinical diseases. Preclinical studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of extracellular vesicles in the treatment of heart, kidney, liver, brain, and skin injuries. To address the putative therapeutic effects and mechanisms of extracellular vesicles derived from human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells on allergic activation in mast cells, we isolated extracellular vesicles from human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) by tangential-flow filtration methods.

The 11,12-epoxy-eicosatrienoic acid (11,12-EET) is formed from arachidonic acid (AA) by cytochrome P450 2J2 (CYP 2J2) epoxygenase and function as an effector in blood vessels. Human endothelial progenitor cells (hEPCs), a preceding cell source for endothelial cells (ECs), involve in the vascular tissue repairing by postnatal neovasculogenesis. However, the effect of 11, 12-EET on hEPCs and neovasculogenesis is not well known.

Purpose: A non-invasive way of assessing post-transplant renal graft function has been needed. This study aimed to assess the micro-structural and micro-functional status of graft kidneys by using intravoxel incoherent motion- (IVIM-) diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) to investigate delayed graft function (DGF) immediately after transplantation.

Method: A prospective study was conducted on 37 patients, 14 with early graft function (EGF) and 23 with DGF (9 with complication, 14 without) who underwent IVIM-DWI, most often within 1-7 days after kidney transplantation.

Our previous studies demonstrated that collapsin response mediator protein 2 (CRMP2) is associated with obesity and, in addition, that hyperglycemia-suppressed CRMP2 augments malignant traits of colorectal cancer and is associated with advanced tumor stage. Regulation of CRMP2 profile was further explored in this study using 3T3-L1 pre-adipocyte adipogenesis as a study model for illustrating the roles of CRMP2 in metabolic homeostasis. Hyperglycemia inhibited expression of CRMP2, adipogenic machinery and adipocyte markers.
