The emergence of a local effective theory from a more fundamental theory of quantum gravity with seemingly fewer degrees of freedom is a major puzzle of theoretical physics. A recent approach to this problem is to consider general features of the Hilbert space maps relating these theories. In this work, we construct approximately local observables, or overlapping qubits, from such non-isometric maps.

Multiple chronic conditions reduce the quality of life and increase healthcare needs for people with diabetes mellitus (DM). This study aims to describe the prevalence of comorbidities associated with DM in the European Union (EU) at national and sub-national levels and to assess the utility of a comorbidity burden index. The study was carried out using microdata from European Health Interview Survey 2019 including adults aged 25 and older with DM from 26 EU member states (n = 20,042).

Silicon integrated circuits (ICs) are central to the next-generation miniature active neural implants, whether packaged in soft polymers for flexible bioelectronics or implanted as bare die for neural probes. These emerging applications bring the IC closer to the corrosive body environment, raising reliability concerns, particularly for chronic use. Here, we evaluate the inherent hermeticity of bare die ICs, and examine the potential of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a moisture-permeable elastomer, as a standalone encapsulation material.

While hypothalamic kisspeptin (KP) neurons play well-established roles in the estrogen-dependent regulation of reproduction, little is known about extrahypothalamic KP-producing (KP) neurons of the lateral septum. As established previously, expression in this region is low and regulated by estrogen receptor- and GABA receptor-dependent mechanisms. Our present experiments on knock-in mice revealed that transgene expression in the LS begins at P33-36 in females and P40-45 in males and is stimulated by estrogen receptor signaling.

In this work, we present the synthesis and application of fluorescent rhodamine B hydrazide for the derivatization of simple oligosaccharides and complex glycans using a hydrazone formation chemistry approach. The labeling conditions and the experimental setup of CE/LIF were optimized by analyzing oligosaccharide standards. The CE/LIF separations were performed in polybrene-coated capillaries eliminating the need for the purification step after derivatization.

Context: Increased orbital tissue volume due to matrix expansion, orbital fibroblast (OF) proliferation and adipocyte differentiation are the hallmarks of thyroid eye disease (TED). Their combination with the presence of hyaluronan-bound excess water in the constrains of the bony orbit results in increased intraorbital pressure. High intraorbital pressure, along with changes in the mechanical properties of orbital tissues, may lead to the activation of mechanosensitive receptors.

During the experimental formation of sol-gel coatings, the colloid dispersions go through a drying process, and the structure of the coatings is formed as a result of complex chemical, colloidal, and capillary interactions. While computer simulations provide guidelines to tune and even design the nanomaterials synthesis, simulations of coating structure formation are hitherto unknown in the literature. Based on real experiments, we establish here a ReaxFF reactive force field-based molecular dynamics simulation protocol in order to investigate and determine the role of the experimental conditions on the pore structure formation in the coatings.

My paper analyses Ali Smith's innovative use of queering as a narrative strategy in (2007) and (2008), focusing on her transformation of narrative structures, epistemic realities, and identity through intertextual engagement. Smith's fiction queers temporality and narrative agency by reimagining classical and literary texts, including Ovid's , John Lyly's , Shakespeare's plays, and . I suggest that in , Smith reinterprets Ovid's myth of Iphis and Ianthe to celebrate fluid and transformative identities, intertwining this with feminist activism and queer desire.

Splanchnic vein thrombosis (SVT) in pancreatic disease has a 20%-30% incidence rate, leading to increased mortality and complication rates. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize recent evidence about the incidence, risk factors, and management of pancreatic cancer, pancreatic cystic neoplasm-, and pancreatitis-related SVT. Understanding the comprehensive impacts of environmental factors on soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIC) in different land use types is of great significance for sustainable soil management. Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) and structural equation modelling were applied to reveal the driving mechanism of SOC, SIC and the ratio between SOC to SIC (SOC/SIC) in three major land use types (forest, grassland and farmland) in a forest-grassland ecotone (FGE) of Inner Mongolia, Northeast China. Mean annual temperature (MAT), mean annual temperature (MAP) and Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) were selected by LASSO as the three most important environmental factors affecting SOC, SIC and SOC/SIC in all land use types.

The human voltage-gated proton channel (H1) provides an efficient proton extrusion pathway from the cytoplasm contributing to the intracellular pH regulation and the oxidative burst. Although its pharmacological inhibition was previously shown to induce cell death in various cell types, no such effects have been examined in polarized macrophages albeit H1 was suggested to play important roles in these cells. This study highlights that 5-chloro-2-guanidinobenzimidazole (ClGBI), the most widely applied H1 inhibitor, reduces the viability of human THP-1-derived polarized macrophages at biologically relevant doses with M1 macrophages being the most, and M2 cells the least sensitive to this compound.
