Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a major cause of female infertility, affects 4%-20% of reproductive-age women. Metabolic and hormonal alterations are key features of PCOS, potentially raising the risk of endometrial (EC) and ovarian (OVCA) cancers. This systematic review aims to summarise the proposed molecular mechanisms involved in the association between PCOS and EC or OVCA.

Age-related atrophy of the human hippocampus and the enthorinal cortex starts accelerating at around age 60. Due to the contributions of these regions to many cognitive functions seamlessly used in everyday life, this can heavily impact the lives of elderly people. The hippocampus is not a unitary structure, and mechanisms of its age-related decline appear to differentially affect its subfields.

Background: Even patients with normal computed tomography (CT) head imaging may experience persistent symptoms for months to years after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). There is currently no good way to predict recovery and triage patients who may benefit from early follow-up and targeted intervention. We aimed to assess if existing prognostic models can be improved by serum biomarkers or diffusion tensor imaging metrics (DTI) from MRI, and if serum biomarkers can identify patients for DTI.

Worldwide, mortality was strongly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, both directly through COVID-19 deaths and indirectly through changes in other causes of death. Here, we examine the impact of the pandemic on COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 mortality in 24 countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, England and Wales, Hungary, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Poland, Russia, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. Using demographic decomposition methods, we compare age- and cause-specific contributions to changes in female and male life expectancy at birth in 2019-2020, 2020-2021, and 2021-2022 with those before the COVID-19 pandemic (2015-2019).

There is a growing worry about the health of American democracy, and political scientists and pundits alike are looking for possible explanations. Surveys conducted during the Trump presidency showed considerable citizen support for liberal democratic norm erosions, especially among Republicans. However, recent experimental research also shows that voters of both parties are more tolerant of norm erosion committed by politicians of the party they prefer.

The use of a composite welded joint consisting of titanium and austenitic stainless steel metals is evidently a favourable selection for industrial applications employing the resistance spot welding (RSW) operation. Nevertheless, achieving a high-quality welded joint proved challenging owing to the properties of the diverse range of materials' used. To improve the quality of dissimilar welded joints, the welding parameters should be selected precisely.

Currently, the increasing use of nickel metal-organic frameworks (Ni-MOF) and nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) has raised concerns regarding their potential environmental impact on wastewater treatment systems. Herein, the responses of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludge (AB-AGS) to Ni-MOF and NiO NPs were investigated. The results showed that Ni-MOF concentrations of 50, 100, and 200 mg/L significantly reduced nutrient removal in both systems, particularly affecting ammonia, nitrite, and phosphorus removal, while denitrification processes remained stable.

Background: Accurate prediction of copy number variations (CNVs) from targeted capture next-generation sequencing (NGS) data relies on effective normalization of read coverage profiles. The normalization process is particularly challenging due to hidden systemic biases such as GC bias, which can significantly affect the sensitivity and specificity of CNV detection. In many cases, the kit manifests provide only the genome coordinates of the targeted regions, and the exact bait design of the oligo capture baits is not available.

In this work, we carry out a systematic computer simulation investigation of the single particle dynamics at the free surface of imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquids by applying intrinsic surface analysis. Besides assessing the effect of the potential model and temperature, we focus in particular on the effect of changing the anion type, and, hence, their shape and size. Further, we also address the role of the length of the cation alkyl chains, known to protrude into the vapor phase, on the surface dynamics of the ions.

Purpose: The most common surgical intervention in childhood is inguinal hernioplasty. The advantage of laparoscopic approach is still questionable, therefore our aim was to compare open hernia repair (OHR) and PIRS (Percutaneous Internal Ring Suturing) technique at the authors' institute.
Methods: An observational retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2013 and 2021.
Evolutionary medicine emerged in the late twentieth century, integrating principles of natural selection and adaptation with the health sciences. Today, with a rapidly widening gap between the biology of and its environment, maladaptation or maladaptive disorders can be detected in almost all diseases, including liver dysfunction. However, in hepatology, as in most medical specialties, evolutionary considerations are neglected because the majority of the medical community is not familiar with evolutionary principles.

Surgeries are situations that endanger bodily integrity. The concept expressed by the term coined by Sherrington encompasses the perception of noxious stimuli and the organization of response to them. To understand the condition of the brain in which anesthesia is performed it is important to review new results of the neurophysiology of nociception.

Transglutaminase 2 (TG2) is a uniquely versatile protein with diverse catalytic activities, such as transglutaminase, protein disulfide isomerase, GTPase and protein kinase, and participates in several biological processes. According to information available in the RBP2GO database, TG2 can act as an RNA-binding protein (RBP). RBPs participate in posttranscriptional gene expression regulation, therefore influencing the function of RNA, whereas RNA molecules can also modulate the biological activity of RBPs.

Finding optimal parameters for detailed neuronal models is a ubiquitous challenge in neuroscientific research. In recent years, manual model tuning has been gradually replaced by automated parameter search using a variety of different tools and methods. However, using most of these software tools and choosing the most appropriate algorithm for a given optimization task require substantial technical expertise, which prevents the majority of researchers from using these methods effectively.

Fluorescence detection of DNA and RNA G-quadruplexes (G4s) is a very efficient strategy to assess not only the existence and prevalence of cellular G4s but also their relevance as targets for therapeutic interventions. Among the fluorophores used to this end, turn-on probes are the most interesting since their fluorescence is triggered only upon interaction with their G4 targets, which ensures a high sensitivity and selectivity of detection. We reported on a series of twice-as-smart G4 probes, which are both smart G4 ligands (whose structure is reorganized upon interaction with G4s) and smart fluorescent probes (whose fluorescence is turned on upon interaction with G4s).

Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders are prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders typically treated with behavioral techniques or pharmacological interventions, primarily antipsychotics. However, many patients do not achieve sufficient response to conventional treatments, underscoring the need for further research in this area. To provide a comprehensive overview of ongoing research activities, we systematically searched the clinical registries of the World Health Organization (WHO) and of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH) for currently planned or ongoing registered clinical studies.

In this work, a novel fluorescent probe (compound 2) based on the Intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) mechanism was designed and successfully applied to determine HS in human serum. Fluorophore 1,8-naphthalimide was chosen, while the azide group was the recognition group for HS determination. By introducing p-toluidine moiety on the imide part of the molecule, a donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated system was formed.
