The relationship between quantitative anatomic parameters in MRI and patient-reported outcomes (PROs) before and after surgery in degenerative lumbar foraminal stenosis remains unknown. We included 58 patients who underwent transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) for single-level degenerative disc disease with foraminal stenosis between February 2013 and June 2020. PROs were evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS) for back and leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D).

The purpose of this study was two-fold. The first was to investigate the pathologic mechanisms underlying the formation of subdural fluid collection, an umbrella term referring to a condition commonly seen in the clinical setting. Accumulation of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the subdural space can be referred to in this disease category, disregarding the underlying source of the subdural fluid.

Purpose: The rapid changes that the healthcare services industry is undergoing pose a challenge to obtaining accurate measurements of the delivery of medical services to patients. Current Chinese measures of patient safety culture may not adequately capture how medical staff perceives the promotion of patient safety. This study aims to construct a valid and applicable patient safety culture instrument by re-estimating the Chinese version of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) with medical staff in Taiwan.

Selenium (Se) and fish oil (FO) exert anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) action on tumors. This study aimed to compare the anti-cancer efficacy of EGFR inhibitors (gefitinib and erlotinib) alone and in combination with nutritional supplements of Se/FO in treating lung cancer. Lewis LLC1 tumor-bearing mice were treated with a vehicle or Se/FO, gefitinib or gefitinib plus Se/FO, and erlotinib or erlotinib plus Se/FO.

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil (FO) and selenium (Se) potentiate some conventional therapies and have anticancer immune potential. This study aims to determine whether FO/Se modulates G-protein-coupled polyunsaturated fatty acid receptors (GPR-40 and GPR-120) and selenoproteins (Sel-H, Sel-W, and GPx4), and increases the therapeutic effect of doxorubicin in a dose-dependent manner on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) mouse. Mice were randomized into 5 groups (n = 7/group) and treated with physiological saline (control), low-dose doxorubicin, and doxorubicin in combination with low, medium, or high doses of FO/Se.

Evidence suggests that hyperdense (HD) chronic subdural hematomas (CSDHs) have a higher recurrence than hypodense (LD) chronic subdural hematomas. The value of mean hematoma density (MHD) has been proven to be associated with postoperative recurrence. The MHD levels in homogeneous CSDHs likely underestimate the risk of recurrence in HD homogeneous subtypes.

Background: Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) is a rare but potentially devastating cause of severe spinal cord compression and degenerative cervical myelopathy. Because OPLL is rarely accompanied by prominent syringomyelia, when both are observed, other causes of syringomyelia should be considered. Simultaneous presentation of OPLL and hemangioblastoma of the cervical spine is a rare encounter and has never been reported in the English-language literature.

Background: Anaemia has a deleterious effect on surgical patients, but the long-term impact of anaemia in critically ill surgical patients remains unclear.
Methods: We enrolled consecutive patients who were admitted to surgical intensive care units (ICUs) at a tertiary referral centre in central Taiwan between 2015 and 2020. We used both Cox proportional hazards analysis and propensity score-based analyses, including propensity score matching (PSM), inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), and covariate balancing propensity score (CBPS) to determine hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for one-year mortality.

Background: Flow diverter stenting is an effective treatment for large proximal internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysms. Cranial neuropathy caused by the mass effect of the aneurysm usually subsides over time. However, a new onset of compressive optic neuropathy after successful flow diverter stenting of a large proximal ICA aneurysm is seldom reported.
