Although berberine (BBR) shows antioxidant activity, its activity is limited. We synthesized 9--benzoic acid berberine derivatives, and their antioxidant activities were screened ABTS, DPPH, HOSC and FRAP assays. The -position was modified with halogen elements on the benzoic acid ring, which led to an enhanced antioxidant activity and the substituent on the -position was found to be better than the -position.

ZIF-8 MOFs, with their large specific surface area and void volume, unique biodegradability and pH sensitivity, and significant loading capacity, have been widely used as carrier materials for bioactive molecules such as drugs, vaccines and genes. In these applications, ZIF-8 MOFs are usually delivered intravenously. Therefore, it is necessary to know the interaction between ZIF-8 MOFs and blood components, which from this sense is a key factor affecting their delivery effectiveness and biosafety.

March 2022

Key Laboratory of Hunan Province for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine on Prevention and Treatment of Cardio-Cerebral Diseases, Hunan University of Chinese Medicine Changsha 410208, China.

This study investigated the mechanism of baicalin on lipopolysaccharide(LPS)/interferon γ(IFN-γ)-induced inflammatory microglia based on the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2(TREM2)/Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4)/nuclear factor kappaB(NF-κB) pathway. Specifically, LPS and IFN-γ were used to induce inflammation in mouse microglia BV2 cells. Then the normal group, model group, low-dose(5 μmol·L~(-1)) baicalin group, medium-dose(10 μmol·L~(-1)) baicalin group, high-dose(20 μmol·L~(-1)) baicalin group, and minocycline(10 μmol·L~(-1)) group were designed.

There are 200-500 species of Potentilla(Rosaceae) worldwide, among which 90 species are widely distributed in China and have a long history of ethnic medicinal use. According to our statistics, a total of 367 compounds have been isolated and identified from plants of this genus, including terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, and phenylpropanoids. The medicinal materials made from these plants mainly have antioxidative, blood sugar-lowering, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, cardiovascular system-protecting, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective activities.

As an important active ingredient in the rare Chinese herb Gastrodiae Rhizoma and also the main precursor for gastrodin biosynthesis, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol has multiple pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammation, anti-tumor, and anti-cerebral ischemia. The pharmaceutical products with 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol as the main component have been increasingly favored. At present, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol is mainly obtained by natural extraction and chemical synthesis, both of which, however, exhibit some shortcomings that limit the long-term application of 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol.

Selective condensation/bicycloaromatization of two different arylalkynes is firstly developed under ligand-free copper(i)-catalysis, which allows the direct synthesis of C-N axial biaryl compounds in high yields with excellent selectivity and functional group tolerance. Due to the critical effects of Cu(i) catalyst and HFIP, many easily occurring undesired reactions are suppressed, and the coupled five-six aromatic rings are constructed the selective formation of two C(sp)-N(sp) bonds and four C(sp)-C(sp) bonds. The achievement of moderate enantioselectivity verifies its potential for the simplest asymmetric synthesis of atropoisomeric biaryls.

Chronical hyperuricemia, a severe metabolic disease characterized by increased serum uric acid, urea nitrogen, and creatinine, has a positive correlation with the risks of gouty arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney damage. Abnormal purine metabolism and reduced uric acid excretion are the major causes of hyperuricemia, which, thus, points to a potential strategy of preventing from or delaying the progress of hyperuricemia-related diseases and its complications by effectively controlling the serum uric acid level. Increasing evidence has revealed that Chinese medicines alleviate hyperuricemia through regulating intestinal flora, which plays a pivotal role in regulating metabolites, including uric acid level.

[Advance in mechanisms of glial scarring after stroke and intervention of traditional Chinese medicine].

Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi

December 2021

Key Laboratory of Hunan Province for Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine on Prevention and Treatment of Cardio-Cerebral Diseases, Hunan University of Chinese Medicine Changsha 410208, China.

When ischemia or hemorrhagic stroke occurs, astrocytes are activated by a variety of endogenous regulatory factors to become reactive astrocytes. Subsequently, reactive astrocytes proliferate, differentiate, and migrate around the lesion to form glial scar with the participation of microglia, neuron-glial antigen 2(NG2) glial cells, and extracellular matrix. The role of glial scars at different stages of stroke injury is different.

The present work is to analyze the HPLC fingerprints of mulberry-sourced materials(Mori Ramulus, Mori Folium, Muri Cortex, Mori Fructus) using the fingerprint division total statistical moment method and information entropy, and to study the diffe-rences of the chemical components and the overall characteristics of the imprinting template in different parts of mulberry-sourced medicinal materials, so as to provide the basis for finding the effective substances in response to "homologous and different effect" of mulberry(Morus alba). The fingerprints of 24 batches of mulberry-related materials, such as Mori Ramulus, Mori Folium, Muri Cortex, Mori Fructus, were established, and the similarities and differences of the fingerprints were analyzed by calculating the division total statistical moment parameters and information entropy. The AUC_T, MCRT_T, VCRT_T and H values of 24 batches of mulberry-sourced materials were less than 0.

Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi

March 2021

Science and Technology Innovation Center/State Key Laboratory Breeding Base of Chinese Medicine Powder and Innovative Medicine, Hunan University of Chinese Medicine Changsha 410208,China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of Baihe Dihuang Decoction on hippocampal neuron synaptic plasticity in rats modeled for anxious depression, using various treatment groups including a high-dose and a low-dose of the decoction.
  • Rats subjected to chronic stress showed significant anxiety and depression-like behaviors, along with reduced synaptic health indicated by lower dendritic spine density and protein expression.
  • Treatment with high-dose Baihe Dihuang Decoction notably alleviated these depressive behaviors and restored synaptic function by increasing the levels of proteins linked to synaptic plasticity, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic approach.

High performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet(HPLC-UV) fingerprint is one of the most important methods for the quality control of Chinese medicines in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. However, certain subjectivity is present in selection of specific band of UV, and the inherent quality differences of Chinese medicine can't be well characterized by this method. Therefore, with different grades of Scrophulariae Radix were taken as the research object in this study, a new quality control model of HPLC-UV was established in this study based on the ultraviolet full-wavelength scanning spectrum.
