Background: Growing evidence suggests that environmental pollutants exert a detrimental impact on female fertility. Among these pollutants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), easily encountered in the environment, have garnered significant attention as prevalent airborne contaminants. Nevertheless, a definitive consensus regarding the association between VOCs and the incidence of infertility remains elusive.

Fluorogenic RNA aptamers have revolutionized the visualization of RNAs within complex cellular processes. A representative category of them employs the derivatives of green fluorescent protein chromophore, 4-hydroxybenzlidene imidazolinone (HBI), as chromophores. However, the structural homogeneity of their chromophoric backbones causes severe cross-reactivity with other homologous chromophores.

Reducing Measurement Deviation by Metastable DNA Probes for Aptamer Thermodynamic Characterization.

Molecular Science and Biomedicine Laboratory (MBL), State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Biosensing and Chemometrics, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Aptamer Engineering Center of Hunan Province, Hunan University, Changsha, Hunan 410082, China.

DNA reaction equilibrium-based calculations have great potential in thermodynamic characterization, but their widespread applications are hindered by significant measurement deviation of equilibrium concentration. Here, we report the advantages of metastable DNA hybridization in reducing quantification deviation of equilibrium concentration and propose a universal and standardized strategy for measuring aptamer binding energy, termed metastable DNA reference calorimetry (MDRC). We built different MDRC-based algorithms tailored to different aptamer binding models, enabling the calculation of thermodynamic parameters for aptamers with one or more binding sites.

Single-electron transfer, low alkali metal contents, and large-molecular masses limit the capacity of cathodes. This study uses a cost-effective and light-molecular-mass orthosilicate material, KFeSiO, with a high initial potassium content, as a cathode for potassium-ion batteries to enable the transfer of more than one electron. Despite the limited valence change of Fe ions during cycling, KFeSiO can undergo multiple electron transfers via successive oxygen anionic redox reactions to generate a high reversible capacity.

CellMsg: graph convolutional networks for ligand-receptor-mediated cell-cell communication analysis.

Brief Bioinform

November 2024

College of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha 410082, China.

The role of cell-cell communications (CCCs) is increasingly recognized as being important to differentiation, invasion, metastasis, and drug resistance in tumoral tissues. Developing CCC inference methods using traditional experimental methods are time-consuming, labor-intensive, cannot handle large amounts of data. To facilitate inference of CCCs, we proposed a computational framework, called CellMsg, which involves two primary steps: identifying ligand-receptor interactions (LRIs) and measuring the strength of LRIs-mediated CCCs.

Boosting One- and Two-Photon Excited Fluorescence of Interpenetrated Tetraphenylethene-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks (TPE-MOFs) by Linker Installation.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

MOE Laboratory of Bioinorganic and Synthetic Chemistry, Lehn Institute of Functional Materials, School of Chemistry, Sun Yat-Sen University, Guangzhou 510006, China.

Immobilizing organic chromophores within the rigid framework of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) augments fluorescence by effectively curtailing molecular motions. Yet, the substantial interspaces and free volumes inherent to MOFs can undermine photoluminescence efficiency, as they partially constrain intramolecular dynamics. In this study, we achieved optimization of both one- and two-photon excited fluorescence by incorporating linkers into an interpenetrated tetraphenylethene-based MOF (TPE-MOF).

All time-scale decomposition (ATD) is a non-parametric adaptive signal decomposition method, which relies on zero-crossing points and extreme points to jointly construct the baseline, achieving the suppression of modal mixing caused by the proximity of component frequencies. However, ATD is unable to solve mode mixing induced by noise. To improve this defect, a new noise-assisted signal decomposition method named ensemble all time-scale decomposition (EATD) is proposed in this paper.

Post-stroke spasticity (PSS), characterized by a velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone and exaggerated reflexes, affects a significant portion of stroke patients and presents a substantial obstacle to post-stroke rehabilitation. Effective management and treatment for PSS remains a significant clinical challenge in the interdisciplinary aspect depending on the understanding of its etiologies and pathophysiology. We systematically review the relevant literature and provide the main pathogenic hypotheses: alterations in the balance of excitatory and inhibitory inputs to the descending pathway or the spinal circuit, which are secondary to cortical and subcortical ischemic or hemorrhagic injury, lead to disinhibition of the stretch reflex and increased muscle tone.

Polylactide (PLA) is inherently brittle and lacks ductility, which greatly restricts its range of applications. In order to address these issues, we blended PLA with biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P(3HB-co-4HB)), and introduced epoxidized soybean oil (ESBO) as a reactive modifier to enhance the properties of the PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) blends. Furthermore, we used theoretical calculations, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Soxhlet extraction, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical testing to investigate the compatibility, crystallization behavior, microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties of the PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB)/ESBO blends.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) show great potential for rapid and highly sensitive detection of trace amounts of contamination from the environment in the surface aquatic ecosystem. The widespread use of antibiotics has resulted in serious degradation of the water environment in the past few years, and their substantial residual contamination of wastewater has a harmful effect on ecosystems, which is associated with the development of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. However, in this study, a novel approach of core-shell nanoparticles GNRs@1,4-BDT@Ag was used for the quantitative measurement of the concentration of antibiotics in wastewater solutions using the SERS technique coupled with computational methods.
