MLMSeg: A multi-view learning model for ultrasound thyroid nodule segmentation.

Comput Biol Med

February 2024

College of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha 410000, China.

Accurate segmentation of the thyroid gland in ultrasound images is an essential initial step in distinguishing between benign and malignant nodules, thus facilitating early diagnosis. Most existing deep learning-based methods to segment thyroid nodules are learned from only a single view or two views, which limits the performance of segmenting nodules at different scales in complex ultrasound scanning environments. To address this limitation, this study proposes a multi-view learning model, abbreviated as MLMSeg.

Previous studies have indicated a potential connection between plasma levels of Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) and platelet-derived growth factor subunit-B (PDGF-B) with the development of atherosclerosis. However, the causal relationship between DKK1, PDGF-B, and the risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is yet to be established. To address this research gap, we conducted Mendelian randomization (MR) and mediation analyses to investigate the potential mediating role of PDGF-B in the association between DKK1 and AMI risk.

Sci Rep

January 2024

Department of General Surgery, Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Normal University, Changsha, 410005, Hunan, People's Republic of China.

To explore the relationship between miR-373 and the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer. Additionally, it aims to predict the potential cellular signaling pathways and regulatory mechanisms in which miR-373 may be involved and provides a theoretical basis and experimental evidence for the clinical application of miR-373 as a potential biomarker, molecular target, and prognostic indicator in colorectal cancer. Real-time quantitative PCR is used to analyze the expression of miR-373 in human colorectal cancer cell lines and normal human colonic epithelial cells.

Upgrading the Separators Integrated with Desolvation and Selective Deposition toward the Stable Lithium Metal Batteries.

Adv Mater

March 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, College of Aerospace Science and Engineering, National University of Defense Technology, Changsha, 410000, P. R. China.

A practical and effective approach to improve the cycle stability of high-energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) is to selectively regulate the growth of the lithium anode. The design of desolvation and lithiophilic structure have proved to be significant means to regulate the lithium deposition process. Here, a fluorinated polymer lithiophilic separator (LS) loaded with a metal-organic framework (MOF801) is designed, which facilitates the rapid transfer of Li within the separator owing to the MOF801-anchored PF from the electrolyte, Li deposition is confined in the plane resulting from the polymer fiber layer rich in lithiophilic groups (C─F).

DDX5 Functions as a Tumor Suppressor in Tongue Cancer.

Cancers (Basel)

December 2023

Department of Oncology, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410008, China.

DEAD-box polypeptide 5 (DDX5), a DEAD-box RNA helicase, is a multifunctional protein that plays important roles in many physiological and pathological processes. Contrary to its documented oncogenic role in a wide array of cancers, we herein demonstrate that DDX5 serves as a tumor suppressor in tongue cancer. The high expression of DDX5 is correlated with better prognosis for clinical tongue cancer patients.

Skin-Interfaced Bifluidic Paper-Based Device for Quantitative Sweat Analysis.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

March 2024

School of Materials Science and Engineering, Xiangtan University, Xiangtan, Hunan, 411105, China.

The erratic, intermittent, and unpredictable nature of sweat production, resulting from physiological or psychological fluctuations, poses intricacies to consistently and accurately sample and evaluate sweat biomarkers. Skin-interfaced microfluidic devices that rely on colorimetric mechanisms for semi-quantitative detection are particularly susceptible to these inaccuracies due to variations in sweat secretion rate or instantaneous volume. This work introduces a skin-interfaced colorimetric bifluidic sweat device with two synchronous channels to quantify sweat rate and biomarkers in real-time, even during uncertain sweat activities.

Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase-Catalyzed Highly Regio-, Chemo-, and Enantioselective Hydrogenation of 3-Keto in Steroids.

Org Lett

January 2024

State Key Laboratory of Chemo/Biosensing and Chemometrics, Advanced Catalytic Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha 410082, P. R. China.

A highly selective hydrogenation of 3-keto in steroids to 3-hydroxyl steroids catalyzed by hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (HSDHs) was demonstrated. The Ct3α-HSDH-catalyzed hydrogenation generated 3α-hydroxyl steroids as the main enantiopure isomers in high yields, while the Ss3β-HSDH catalytic system afforded 3β-hydroxyl steroids in excellent yields. In both catalytic systems, the hydrogenation proceeded regioselectively at 3-keto with 7-, 11-, 17-, and 20-keto almost unreacted, and chemoselectively with the C═C bond and ester group unattacked.

Acetylation is required for full activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome.

Nat Commun

December 2023

Department of Hematology and Critical Care Medicine, the Third Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan Province, 410000, P. R. China.

Full activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome needs two sequential signals: a priming signal, followed by a second, assembly signal. Several studies have shown that the two signals trigger post-translational modification (PTM) of NLRP3, affecting activity of the inflammasome, however, the PTMs induced by the second signal are less well characterized. Here, we show that the assembly signal involves acetylation of NLRP3 at lysine 24, which is important for the oligomerization and the actual assembly of NLRP3 without affecting its recruitment to dispersed trans-Golgi network (dTGN).

Skillfully engineering surface ligands at specific sites within robust clusters presents both a formidable challenge and a captivating opportunity. Herein we unveil an unprecedented titanium-oxo cluster: a calix[8]arene-stabilized metallamacrocycle (TiL), uniquely crafted through the fusion of four "core-shell" {Ti@(TBC[8])(L)} subunits with four oxalate moieties. Notably, this cluster showcases an exceptional level of chemical stability, retaining its crystalline integrity even when immersed in highly concentrated acid (1 M HNO) and alkali (20 M NaOH).

Specific memory processes and emotional aberrations in depression can be attributed to the different dorsal-ventral regions of the hippocampus. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the differential functions of the dorsal hippocampus (dHip) and ventral hippocampus (vHip) remain unclear. As Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) is involved in the dorsal-ventral patterning of the neural tube and its signaling is dysregulated by chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS), we investigated its role in influencing the differential functions of the dHip and vHip.
