Adaptive dynamical networks are ubiquitous in real-world systems. This paper aims to explore the synchronization dynamics in networks of adaptive oscillators based on a paradigmatic system of adaptively coupled phase oscillators. Our numerical observations reveal the emergence of synchronization cluster bursting, characterized by periodic transitions between cluster synchronization and global synchronization.

The genus Alphavirus harbors arboviruses of great concern, such as the Chikungunya virus and the equine encephalitis viruses. Transmission of pathogenic alphaviruses by mosquitoes could be influenced by insect-specific alphaviruses such as Eilat virus (EILV). However, insect-specific alphaviruses are rarely found in wild mosquitoes and only a few have been described in the literature.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are one of the major natural hazards to island and coastal communities and ecosystems. However, isotopic compositions of TC-derived precipitation (P) in surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) reservoirs are still lacking. We tested the three main assumptions of the isotope storm "spike" hypothesis (sudden spikes in isotopic ratios).

Closely related host species share similar symbionts, but the effects of host genetic admixture and environmental conditions on these communities remain largely unknown. We investigated the influence of host genetic admixture and environmental factors on the intestinal prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities (fungi, parasites) of two house mouse subspecies ( and ) and their hybrids in two settings: (i) wild-caught mice from the European hybrid zone and (ii) wild-derived inbred mice in a controlled laboratory environment before and during a community perturbation (infection). In wild-caught mice, environmental factors strongly predicted the overall microbiome composition.

Identifying complex periodic windows surrounded by chaos in the two or higher dimensional parameter space of certain dynamical systems is a challenging task for time series analysis based on complex network approaches. This holds particularly true for the case of shrimp structures, where different bifurcations occur when crossing different domain boundaries. The corresponding dynamics often exhibit either period-doubling when crossing the inner boundaries or, respectively, intermittency for outer boundaries.

Background: Serum total 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration is the most widely used clinical biomarker for vitamin D status. Under certain physiological and pathological conditions, however, total 25(OH)D may not always be the best index for vitamin D status. Instead, the nonprotein-bound (free) fraction of total 25(OH)D has been suggested as a more appropriate marker in certain clinical situations.

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.

Substitution patterns and price response for plant-based meat alternatives.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

December 2024

Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Göttingen, Göttingen 37073, Germany.

Efforts to promote sustainable resource use through reduced meat consumption face challenges as global meat consumption persists. The resistance may be attributed to the lower sales price of meat compared to most plant-based meat alternatives (PBMAs). Addressing this, our research delves into the pivotal question of which PBMAs resonate most with consumers and how pricing affects demand.

Aims: Traditional cardiovascular (CV) biomarkers (high-sensitivity troponinT [hsTnT] and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide [NT-proBNP]) are important to monitor cancer patients' cardiac function and to assess prognosis. Newer CV biomarkers (mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin [MR-proADM], C-terminal pro-arginine vasopressin [copeptin], and mid-regional pro-atrial natriuretic peptide [MR-proANP]) might outperform traditional biomarkers.

Methods And Results: Overall, 442 hospitalized cancer patients without significant CV disease or current infection were enrolled (61 ± 15 years, 52% male, advanced cancer stage: 85%) and concentrations of CV biomarkers were analysed.

Allopregnanolone (AlloP) is an example of neuroactive steroids (NAS), which is a potent allosteric activator of the γ-aminobutyric acid A (GABA) receptor. The mechanisms underlying the biological activity of AlloP and other NAS are only partially understood. Here, we present intrinsically fluorescent analogs of AlloP (MQ-323) and its 3β-epimer, epi-allopregnanolone (E-AlloP) (YX-11), and show, by a combination of spectroscopic and computational studies, that these analogs mimic the membrane properties of AlloP and E-AlloP very well.

We analyzed spin polarization dynamics in a two-dimensional system of spin 1/2 charged particles with spin-orbit interaction in perpendicular magnetic field in the presence of external noise. It was shown that spin polarization reveals quantum oscillations, collapses, and revivals. The hierarchy of time scales corresponding to quantum oscillations, collapses, and revivals was identified and analyzed.

We study the impact of bursts on spike statistics and neural signal transmission. We propose a stochastic burst algorithm that is applied to a burst-free spike train and adds a random number of temporally-jittered burst spikes to each spike. This simple algorithm ignores any possible stimulus-dependence of bursting but allows to relate spectra and signal-transmission characteristics of burst-free and burst-endowed spike trains.

Background: Calcification is common in chronic vascular disease, yet its role in pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease is unknown. Here, we probed for the role of runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2), a master transcription factor in osteogenesis, and its regulation by the HIPPO pathway transcriptional coactivator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ) in the osteogenic reprogramming of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells and vascular calcification in patients with pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease. We similarly examined its role using an established rat model of pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease induced by supracoronary aortic banding.

As land use intensifies globally, it increasingly exerts pressure on protected areas. Despite open, nonforested landscapes comprising up to 40% of protected areas globally, assessments have predominately focused on forests, overlooking the major pressures on rangelands from livestock overgrazing and land conversion. Across the southern Caucasus, a biodiversity hotspot extending over 5 countries, we conducted a broadscale assessment of the extent to which protected areas mitigate land-use pressure on rangelands in them.
