: Traumatic injuries in eyes previously treated with Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (DALK) can lead to ruptures in the Descemet Membrane (DM) and damage to the corneal endothelium, a crucial layer for maintaining corneal clarity. Due to cell cycle constraints, the human corneal endothelium cannot proliferate; instead, it compensates for injury through cell enlargement and migration from adjacent areas. : This study examines a notable case of corneal endothelial cell migration following a penetrating eye injury in a patient previously treated with DALK for keratoconus, supplemented by a review of relevant literature to contextualize the regenerative response.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors that predict seizure recurrence in women of childbearing age with idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) who switched from valproate (VPA) to alternative antiseizure medications (ASMs) like levetiracetam (LEV) and lamotrigine (LTG).
  • Researchers evaluated data from 426 women across 16 epilepsy centers, finding that common reasons for switching medications included concerns about teratogenicity and that around a quarter of the women experienced worsening or recurrence of seizures within 12 and 24 months.
  • The analysis revealed that LEV was associated with a lower risk of seizure recurrence or worsening compared to LTG, providing potential guidance for treatment options after VPA discontinuation.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflatable penile prostheses are recognized as the best treatment for erectile dysfunction, with two main surgical techniques: penoscrotal and infrapubic, though no definitive evidence shows one is better than the other.
  • A review of 26 studies indicates that while the penoscrotal approach is more common and viewed as comfortable by surgeons, the infrapubic method is quicker and results in higher patient satisfaction.
  • Overall, both techniques show similar complication rates, with the choice often depending on case complexity and surgeon preference, despite the infrapubic method's advantages in speed and patient contentment.

The ocular surface is a complex structure that includes cornea, conjunctiva, limbus, and tear film, and is critical for maintaining visual function. When the ocular-surface integrity is altered by a disease, conventional therapies usually rely on topical drops or tissue replacement with more invasive procedures, such as corneal transplants. However, in the last years, regeneration therapies have emerged as a promising approach to repair the damaged ocular surface by stimulating cell proliferation and restoring the eye homeostasis and function.

Background: With the rising global prevalence of fatty liver disease related to metabolic dysfunction, the association of this common liver condition with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become increasingly evident. In 2020, the more inclusive term metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was proposed to replace the term non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The observed association between MAFLD and CKD and our understanding that CKD can be a consequence of underlying metabolic dysfunction support the notion that individuals with MAFLD are at higher risk of having and developing CKD compared with those without MAFLD.

Radiofrequency Ablation in Vertebral Body Metastasis with and without Percutaneous Cement Augmentation: A Systematic Review Addressing the Need for SPINE Stability Evaluation.

Diagnostics (Basel)

March 2023

Section of Neurosurgery, Department of Neuroscienze, Riabilitazione, Oftalmologia, Genetica e Scienze Materno-Infantili, IRCCS Policlinico San Martino, University of Geneva, Largo Rosanna Benzi, 10, 16132 Genova, Italy.

Vertebral body metastases (VBM) are one of the most frequent sites of bone metastasis, and their adequate therapeutic management still represents an insidious challenge for both oncologists and surgeons. A possible alternative treatment for VBM is radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a percutaneous technique in which an alternating current is delivered to the tumor lesion producing local heating and consequent necrosis. However, RFA alone could alter the biomechanics and microanatomy of the vertebral body, thus increasing the risk of post-procedure vertebral fractures and spine instability, and indeed the aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of RFA on spine stability.
