Efficacy of endoscopic interventions versus surgery for pain management in patients with chronic calcific pancreatitis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Chronic calcific pancreatitis (CCP) is a debilitating inflammatory condition characterized by the accumulation of calcific deposits in the pancreatic tissue, leading to chronic abdominal pain and functional insufficiencies. This study aims to systematically review and meta-analyse comparative studies assessing the efficacy of endotherapy versus surgery in managing CCP-related pain.

Methods: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane library (CENTRAL and CDSR), from inception to October 2023, were searched.

A Serum Multi-Parametric Analysis Identifies an Early Innate Immune Signature Associated to Increased Vaccine-Specific Antibody Production and Seroconversion in Simultaneous COVID-19 mRNA and Cell-Based Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccination.

In this pilot study, a multi-parametric analysis comparing immune responses in sera of adult healthy subjects (HS) or people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) undergoing the single or simultaneous administration of mRNA-based COVID-19 and cellular quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccines was conducted. While SARS-CoV-2 antibodies remains comparable, influenza antibody titers and seroconversion were significantly higher upon simultaneous vaccination. Magnitude of anti-influenza humoral response closely correlated with an early innate immune signature, previously described for the COVID-19 vaccine, composed of IL-15, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ, CXCL-10 and here extended also to acute-phase protein Pentraxin 3.

Geographical disparities in fibromyalgia severity: An Italian study.

Background: Geographic origin may represent a variable capable of influencing health status. This study aims to investigate the presence of differences of disease severity in Italian patients with fibromyalgia from different macro-regions.

Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study involved patients included in the Italian Fibromyalgia Registry.

Since the late 20th century, the discovery of the first susceptibility gene (NOD2, previously referred to as CARD15) for CD has paved the way for further investigations into the correlations between clinical features and genetics, and its potential impact on clinical practice has fueled the research in the last 2 decades. Recent therapeutic advancements involving novel biologic drugs and small molecules have shifted inflammatory bowel disease management from a disease-centered to a patient-centric approach.

Adherence to Mediterranean diet is inversely associated with depressive symptoms in older women: findings from the NutBrain Study.

Data on the association of the Mediterranean diet (MD) with depressive symptoms in older people at high risk of depression are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional association of the adherence to the MD and its components with depressive symptoms in an Italian cohort of older men and women. A total of 325 men and 473 women aged 65–97 years (2019–2023) answered a 102-item semi-quantitative FFQ, which was used to calculate the Mediterranean diet score (MDS).

A Fecal Metabolite Signature of Impaired Fasting Glucose: Results From Two Independent Population-Based Cohorts.

Unlabelled: Prediabetes is a metabolic condition associated with gut microbiome composition, although mechanisms remain elusive. We searched for fecal metabolites, a readout of gut microbiome function, associated with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in 142 individuals with IFG and 1,105 healthy individuals from the UK Adult Twin Registry (TwinsUK). We used the Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) cohort (318 IFG individuals, 689 healthy individuals) to replicate our findings.

Impact of inter-observer variability on first axillary level dosimetry in breast cancer radiotherapy: An AIRO multi-institutional study.

This study quantified the incidental dose to the first axillary level (L1) in locoregional treatment plan for breast cancer. Eighteen radiotherapy centres contoured L1-L4 on three different patients (P1,2,3), created the L2-L4 planning target volume (single centre planning target volume, SC-PTV) and elaborated a locoregional treatment plan. The L2-L4 gold standard clinical target volume (CTV) along with the gold standard L1 contour (GS-L1) were created by an expert consensus.

Effect of Telerehabilitation and Outpatient Rehabilitation in Women with Breast Cancer.

Telemedicine was shown to be indispensable during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic to ensure continuity of care for fragile patients. We compared a telerehabilitation program versus an outpatient rehabilitation program in women with breast cancer undergoing quadrantectomy surgery. There were 56 women with breast cancer divided into two groups: the treatment group (TG), made up of 24 patients undergoing a remote rehabilitation project program; and the control group (CG), composed of 32 patients subjected to the same rehabilitation project program in an outpatient setting.

International Delphi Consensus Study on disposable single-use endoscopy: A path to clinical adoption.

Background/objective: Increasing infectious rate estimates and low microbiological surveillance affect safety of gastrointestinal endoscopy globally. Single use endoscopes and accessories have been claimed to improve safety, but there is lack of data on their indication and sustainability. We aimed to identify a series of best practice recommendations for the use of single use endoscopes and accessories using a modified Delphi.

Organization and Activity of Italian Echocardiographic Laboratories: A Survey of the Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging.

Background: The Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging (SIECVI) conducted a national survey to understand better how different echocardiographic modalities are used and accessed in Italy.

Methods: We analyzed echocardiography laboratory activities over a month (November 2022). Data were retrieved via an electronic survey based on a structured questionnaire, uploaded on the SIECVI website.

Whole chromosome instability with near-whole genome haploidization (GH) and subsequent endoreduplication is considered a main genomic driver in the tumorigenesis of oncocytic cell thyroid neoplasms (OCN). These copy number alterations (CNA) occur less frequently in oncocytic thyroid adenoma (OA) than in oncocytic carcinoma (OCA), suggesting a continuous process. The current study described the CNA patterns in a cohort of 30 benign and malignant OCN, observed using a next-generation sequencing (NGS) panel that assesses genome-wide loss of heterozygosity (LOH) and chromosomal imbalances using 1500 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across all autosomes and the X chromosome in DNA derived from cytological and histological samples.

Preoperative imaging in primary hyperparathyroidism patients using 4DCT subtraction maps, a report of three cases.

Four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) is one of the preoperative imaging modalities that can be used to localize a parathyroid adenoma in primary hyperparathyroidism patients however, sensitivity differs in literature and could be improved especially for multiglandular hyperplasia or double adenomas. The most robust feature on the 4DCT for the differentiation between parathyroid adenoma and thyroid gland tissue is arterial enhancement. To make this better visible, we have developed a subtraction map that shows arterial enhancement as a color scale to increase sensitivity for 4DCT.

Objectives: The very long-term mortality of off-pump and on-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) versus percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in a randomized complex coronary artery disease population is unknown. This study aims to investigate the impact of on-pump and off-pump CABG versus PCI on 10-year all-cause mortality.

Methods: The SYNTAX trial randomized 1800 patients with three-vessel and/or left main coronary artery disease to PCI or CABG and assessed their survival at 10 years.
