Introduction: Both the incidence and mortality rates associated with methicillin-resistant (MRSA) have progressively increased worldwide. A nucleic acid testing system was developed in response, enabling swift and precise detection of () and its MRSA infection status. This facilitates improved prevention and control of MRSA infections.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of artemisinin resistance-related and genes in isolates from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, so as to to provide baseline data for the formulation of malaria control strategies in Bioko Island.
Methods: A total of 184 clinical blood samples were collected from patients with malaria in Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea from 2018 to 2020, and genomic DNA was extracted. The and gene SNPs of were determined using a nested PCR assay and Sanger sequencing, and the gene sequences were aligned.

Objective: To develop a prognostic model for post-transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) beyond the Milan criteria treated by transarterial chemoembolization (TACE).
Design: Between January 2013 and January 2020, 512 patients with HCC beyond the Milan criteria who underwent TACE after TIPS were retrospectively recruited from 15 tertiary centers. Patients were randomly sorted into a training set (n = 382) and a validation set (n = 130).

We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of prophylactic central neck dissection following total thyroidectomy on surgical site wound infection, hematoma, and haemorrhage in subjects with clinically node-negative papillary thyroid carcinoma. A systematic literature search up to April 2022 was performed and 3517 subjects with clinically node-negative papillary thyroid carcinoma at the baseline of the studies; 1503 of them were treated with prophylactic central neck dissection following total thyroidectomy, and 2014 were using total thyroidectomy. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to assess the effect of prophylactic central neck dissection following total thyroidectomy on surgical site wound infection, hematoma, and haemorrhage in subjects with clinically node-negative papillary thyroid carcinoma using the dichotomous method with a random or fixed-effect model.

Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) resistance has emerged and could be diffusing in Africa. As an offshore island on the African continent, the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea is considered severely affected and resistant to drug-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria. However, the spatial and temporal distribution remain unclear.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is now widely used in the diagnosis and monitor of neonatal lung diseases. Nevertheless, in the published literatures, the LUS images may display a significant variation in technical execution, while scanning parameters may influence diagnostic accuracy. The inter- and intra-observer reliabilities of ultrasound exam have been extensively studied in general and in LUS.

Background: Thrombospondin-related adhesive protein (TRAP) is a transmembrane protein that plays a crucial role during the invasion of Plasmodium falciparum into liver cells. As a potential malaria vaccine candidate, the genetic diversity and natural selection of PfTRAP was assessed and the global PfTRAP polymorphism pattern was described.
Methods: 153 blood spot samples from Bioko malaria patients were collected during 2016-2018 and the target TRAP gene was amplified.

In this paper, we explore the potential of using the multivoxel proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) to diagnose neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) with the assistance of a support vector machine broad learning system (BL-SVM). We retrospectively analysed 23 confirmed patients and 16 healthy controls, who underwent a 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence with multivoxel H-MRS in our hospitals.

Background: Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP) is a potential malaria vaccine candidate, but various polymorphisms of the pfcsp gene among global P. falciparum population become the major barrier to the effectiveness of vaccines. This study aimed to investigate the genetic polymorphisms and natural selection of pfcsp in Bioko and the comparison among global P.

Purpose: Antimalarial drug resistance is one of the major challenges in global efforts to control and eliminate malaria. In 2006, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) replaced with artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, in response to increasing SP resistance, which is associated with mutations in the dihydrofolate reductase () and dihydropteroate synthase () genes.
Patients And Methods: To evaluate the trend of molecular markers associated with SP resistance on Bioko Island from 2011 to 2017, 179 samples collected during active case detection were analysed by PCR and DNA sequencing.

Purpose: Currently, thalassemia is commonly detected using gap-polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) reverse dot blot, which have high requirements of space, instruments, and personnel. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method for thalassemia detection with high sensitivity, low cost, and simple and fast operation. In this study, we aimed to design and evaluate a new method for detecting three α-thalassemia genes including -Southeast Asian (SEA), -α3.

Background: Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an essential enzyme that protects red blood cells from oxidative damage. Although G6PD-deficient alleles appear to confer a protective effect of malaria, the link with clinical protection against Plasmodium infection is conflicting.
Methods: A case-control study was conducted on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea and further genotyping analysis used to detect natural selection of the G6PD A- allele.

Objective: To assess the therapeutic effect of hyaluronate acid (HA) injection through the subpatellar route for treatment of chondromalacia patellae (CP).
Methods: Eighty-eight patients with the diagnosis of CP were enrolled in this prospective study, including 38 with early CP (CP group) and 50 with advanced CP (patellofemoral arthritis group) diagnosed based on image presentations. All the patients received intra-articular HA injections through a subpatellar route once a week for 5 consecutive weeks.

Patients And Methods: In this randomized, open-label, multicenter, phase III trial, patients who received 18-24 weeks of induction chemotherapy with XELOX or FOLFOX and achieved disease control were randomly assigned centrally (1:1) to receive maintenance therapy of capecitabine or only observation until disease progression.
Middle East respiratory syndrome is a viral respiratory illness caused by a novel human beta-coronavirus. Based on the first case of Middle East respiratory syndrome found in China, a clinical research in combination with radiological findings was studied. Fever was the main clinical manifestation of this patient, and the primary imaging findings were basically the same as viral pneumonia.
