Background People with reduced glomerular filtration rate (GFR) often have elevated cardiac troponin T (cTnT) levels. It remains unclear how cTnT levels develop over time in those with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this study was to prospectively study the association between cTnT and GFR over time in older advanced-stage CKD patients not on dialysis.

The aim of this study was to determine the utility of a new mathematical model in volumetric assessment of the placenta using 2-D ultrasound. Placental volumetry was performed in a prospective cross-sectional survey by virtual organ computer-aided analysis (VOCAL) with the help of a shell-off method in 346 uncomplicated pregnancies according to STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology) guidelines. Furthermore, placental thickness, length and height were measured with the 2-D technique to estimate placental volume based on the mathematical formula for the volume of "the shell of the spherical sector.

A lower-limb functional capacity test for enlistment into Swedish Armed Forces ranger units.

Mil Med

November 2006

Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Division of Physiotherapy, Karolinska Institute, Huddinge Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

The present work validated minimal performance standards for a lower-limb functional capacity test used at enrollment to predict the risk of discharge from strenuous military ranger training in the Swedish Armed Forces. To set a relevant level of performance, trained conscripts in a ranger unit (n = 38) performed a maximal physical fitness test, including the newly developed ranger test, during the last week of their 1-year basic training. The following year, basic training started with an initial strength test performed by all conscripts (n = 285).

Progress in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in multiple myeloma.

Curr Opin Hematol

November 2005

Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institute, Huddinge Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Purpose Of Review: An attempt is made to value the place of autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Recent progress with each treatment modality has significantly changed the outcome for myeloma patients.

Recent Findings: The gold standard for conditioning treatment before autologous transplantation is melphalan 200 mg/m, and the use of peripheral blood stem cells is superior to that of bone marrow.
