This study established a pyroptosis injury model by stimulating insulinoma cells(INS-1) of rats with high glucose(HG) and observed the impact of additional ethanol(ET) exposure on cell pyroptosis, as well as the intervention effect of salidroside(SAL). INS-1 cells were cultured and divided into a normal control group(NG), an HG group, an HG + ET(100 mmol·L~(-1)) group, and an HG + ET + SAL(1-100 μmol·L~(-1)) group. After 72 hours of treatment, cell viability was assessed using the cell counting kit-8(CCK-8) assay.

Article Synopsis
  • Luteolin is a natural flavonoid found in various plants and has properties that lower uric acid and act as an antioxidant, but its exact mechanism for treating hyperuricemia nephropathy (HN) is not completely understood.
  • This study investigates the effects of luteolin in HN using mouse models and cell cultures, finding that it helps protect kidney tissue and improve renal functions by reducing specific harmful proteins and activating beneficial pathways.
  • The results indicate that luteolin aids in kidney injury recovery by enhancing urate excretion and antioxidant activity while also inhibiting xanthine oxidase in the liver, suggesting it could be a potential treatment for HN.

Remarkable progress has been made in infection prevention and control (IPC) in many countries, but some gaps emerged in the context of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Core capabilities such as standard clinical precautions and tracing the source of infection were the focus of IPC in medical institutions during the pandemic. Therefore, the core competences of IPC professionals during the pandemic, and how these contributed to successful prevention and control of the epidemic, should be studied.

Article Synopsis
  • * The SPI-2 effector SseK3 inhibits the normal pairing of SNARE proteins, which are essential for vesicle fusion, leading to the formation of harmful filaments in infected cells.
  • * Host cells respond by activating the E3 ubiquitin ligase TRIM32, which targets SseK3 for degradation, thereby reducing its impact and inhibiting bacterial replication.

The boom of aqueous Zn-based energy storage devices, such as zinc-iodine (Zn-I) batteries, is quite suitable for safe and sustainable energy storage technologies. However, in rechargeable aqueous Zn-I batteries, the shuttle phenomenon of polyiodide ions usually leads to irreversible capacity loss resulting from both the iodine cathode and the zinc anode, and thus impinges on the cycle lifespan of the battery. Herein, a nontoxic, biocompatible, and economical polymer of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is exploited as an electrolyte additive.

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a severe inflammatory phase of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) spectrum and can progress to advanced stages of NAFLD if left untreated. This study uses multi-omics data to elucidate the underlying mechanism of naringenin's reported benefit in alleviating (NASH). Male mice were fed a NASH-inducing (methionine-choline-deficient) MCD diet with or without naringenin supplementation for 6 weeks.

Small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are essential mediators of intercellular communication within the tumor microenvironment (TME). Although the biological features of sEVs have been characterized based on in vitro culture models, recent evidence indicates significant differences between sEVs derived from tissue and those derived from in vitro models in terms of both content and biological function. However, comprehensive comparisons and functional analyses are still limited.

SLC17A9 as a prognostic biomarker correlated with immune infiltrates in human non-small cell lung cancer.

Am J Cancer Res

September 2023

Department of Nuclear Medicine and Institute of Anesthesiology and Pain, Taihe Hospital, Hubei University of Medicine Shiyan 442000, Hubei, China.

The vesicular nucleotide transporter (SLC17A9) has been overexpressed in various cancers. Nonetheless, little is known about its influence on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including human lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). Integrative bioinformatics analysis was performed to investigate the prognostic significance and underlying mechanisms of SLC17A9 in patients with NSCLC.

This study aims to investigate the effect and mechanism of hydnocarpin(HC) in treating triple negative breast cancer(TNBC). Cell counting kit-8(CCK-8), xCELLigence real-time cellular analysis(RTCA), and colony formation assay were employed to determine the effects of HC on the proliferation of two TNBC cell lines: MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-436. The effects of HC on the migration and invasion of TNBC cells were detected by high-content analysis, wound-healing assay, and Transwell assay.

Article Synopsis
  • A new series of compounds called 4-(benzofuran-6-yloxy)quinazoline derivatives were created as dual inhibitors targeting VEGFR-2 and HDAC, inspired by existing drugs fruquintinib and vorinostat.
  • Among these compounds, compound 13 showed strong inhibitory effects on VEGFR-2 and HDAC1, with impressive antiproliferative activity against various cancer cell lines like MCF-7 and HeLa.
  • Compound 13 slowed down cell growth during specific cell cycle phases and caused significant cell death in HeLa cells, while also demonstrating anti-angiogenic effects, making it a promising candidate for further cancer treatment research.

This study aimed to explore the anti-glioma effect of natural compound pterostilbene(PTE) through regulating pyroptosis and apoptosis pathways, and to analyze the possible anti-glioma pathways and targets of PTE by network pharmacology and molecular docking. In this study, the action targets of PTE and the glioma targets were obtained by network pharmacology to construct a target network and a protein-protein interaction(PPI) network to predict the possible action targets of PTE against glioma. Molecular docking was performed on the core targets by AutoDock and the action pathways of PTE against glioma were predicted by enrichment analysis.

Background This study was performed to identify metabolites associated with incident acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and explore causality of the associations. Methods and Results We performed nontargeted metabolomics in a nested case-control study in the Dongfeng-Tongji cohort, including 500 incident ACS cases and 500 age- and sex-matched controls. Three metabolites, including a novel one (aspartylphenylalanine), and 1,5-anhydro-d-glucitol (1,5-AG) and tetracosanoic acid, were identified as associated with ACS risk, among which aspartylphenylalanine is a degradation product of the gut-brain peptide cholecystokinin-8 rather than angiotensin by the angiotensin-converting enzyme (odds ratio [OR] per SD increase [95% CI], 1.

Although the expression of autophagy-related 10 (ATG10) is known to be associated with the poor prognosis of cancer patients by enhancing cancer cell growth and migration, the roles of ATG10 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains to be determined. In this study, the expression of ATG10 in HCC was analyzed using the data from TCGA databases and was further verified in the clinical samples from our patients. In addition, the relationships of ATG10 expression with clinical features, diagnosis and prognosis, as well as the predictive values of ATG10 expression in overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS) and progression-free interval (PFI) were explored.
