Polyphenols have potent antioxidant properties, but are easily degraded in the gastrointestinal tract, greatly limiting their application as dietary supplements. Therefore, the composition changes of lotus seedpod oligomeric procyanidins (LSOPC) in the gastrointestinal digestion, colonic fermentation and their absorption in Caco-2 cell monolayer were studied. The extracted LSOPC were identified using UPLC-Q-Exactive/MS, and a total of 47 compounds were identified.

Background: Gene-edited pigs for xenotransplantation usually contain one or more transgenes encoding human complement regulatory proteins (CRPs). Because of species differences, human CRP(s) expressed in gene-edited pigs may have difficulty inhibiting the activation of exogenous rabbit complement added to a complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) assay. The use of human complement instead of rabbit complement in CDC experiments may more accurately reflect the actual regulatory activity of human CRP(s).

The study of the multifaceted interactions between neuroscience and cancer is an emerging field with significant implications for understanding tumor biology and the innovation in therapeutic approaches. Increasing evidence suggests that neurological functions are connected with tumorigenesis. In particular, the peripheral and central nervous systems, synapse, neurotransmitters, and neurotrophins affect tumor progression and metastasis through various regulatory approaches and the tumor immune microenvironment.

The generation of radicals through photo-Fenton-like reactions demonstrates significant potential for remediating emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in complex aqueous environments. However, the excitonic effect, induced by Coulomb interactions between photoexcited electrons and holes, reduces carrier utilization efficiency in these systems. In this study, we develop Cu single-atom-loaded covalent organic frameworks (Cu/COFs) as models to modulate excitonic effects.

There is currently a lack of research examining the association between the consumption of different dairy products and type 2 diabetes (T2D) in East Asian populations. To address this gap, the present study employs Mendelian randomization (MR) to investigate the potential impact of 3 different types of milk consumption (including whole milk, semi-skim milk, and skim milk) on the risk of developing T2D. The results indicate that both whole milk and skim milk are associated with an increased risk of T2D (whole milk: OR = 1.

Artificial intelligence-assisted imaging biosensors have attracted increasing attention due to their flexibility, allowing for the digital image analysis and quantification of biomarkers. While deep learning methods have led to advancements in biomarker identification, the diversity in the density and adherence of targets still poses a serious challenge. In this regard, we propose CellNet, a neural network model specifically designed for detecting dense targets.

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is the only treatment that addresses the root cause of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergies, but conventional methods face challenges with treatment duration, patient compliance, and adverse effects. In this study, we propose intratonsillar immunotherapy (ITIT) as a new effective and safer route for AIT. Prior to clinical trials, we analyzed tonsil samples from human subjects to assess immune responses, measuring interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-21, total IgE (tIgE), and allergen-specific IgE concentrations using ELISA and BioIC.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD) is the main pathological factor resulting in low back pain (LBP), the leading cause of disability globally. Inflammatory response and extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation are critical pathological features in the development of IDD. Gastrodin (GAS), a phenol compound isolated from Gastrodia elata Blume, plays an anti-inflammatory role in experimental models of multiple human diseases.

Oxytocin, a neuropeptide pivotal in social and reproductive behaviors, has recently gained attention for its potential impact on cognitive processes relevant to creativity. Yet, the direct intricate interplay between oxytocin and creativity, particularly in the context of individual differences in motivational orientations, remains poorly understood. Here, we investigated the effects of intranasal oxytocin on creative thinking in individuals characterized by varying levels of approach and avoidance motivations.

The impact of geopolitical risks (GPR) on enterprises is significant, yet the existing literature lacks a comprehensive understanding of how GPR affects environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. This study addresses this gap by analysing data from Chinese enterprises over the period 2009 to 2021. It empirically examines the impact of GPR on ESG performance and explores the underlying mechanisms.

Innate immunity serves as a crucial defense mechanism against invading pathogens, yet its negative regulatory network remains under explored. In this study, we identify BEN domain-containing protein 6 (BEND6) as a novel negative regulator of innate immunity through a genome-scale CRISPR knockout screen for host factors essential for viral replication. We show that BEND6 exhibits characteristics of an interferon-stimulated gene (ISG), with its mRNA and protein levels upregulated by RNA virus-induced IFN-β.

The thermocatalytic conversion of CO with green or blue hydrogen into valuable energy and commodity chemicals such as alcohols, olefins, and aromatics emerges as one of the most promising strategies for mitigating global warming concerns in the future. This process can follow either a CO-modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis route or a methanol-mediated route, with the latter being favored for its high product selectivity beyond the Anderson-Schulz-Flory distribution. Despite the progress of the CO-led methanol-mediated route over bifunctional metal/zeolite catalysts, challenges persist in developing catalysts with both high activity and selectivity due to the complexity of CO hydrogenation reaction networks and the difficulty in controlling C-O bond activation and C-C bond coupling on multiple active sites within zeolites.

This paper develops a finite element analysis model to investigate the seepage characteristics of cement sheaths, considering the flow properties of their porous medium. The model's applicability under various conditions was evaluated through grid sensitivity tests and model validation, indicating that it effectively captures the seepage behavior of cement sheaths with a reasonable degree of reliability. Key parameters, including cement sheath length, permeability, gap structure, pressure differential, and fluid properties, were analyzed using finite element methods to determine their impact on seepage flow.
