Lipid droplets (LDs) are dynamic organelles essential for lipid storage and organismal survival. Studies have highlighted the importance of glial function in brain LD formation during aging; however, the genes and mechanisms involved remain elusive. Here, we found that Ugt35b, a member of the uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glycosyltransferases that catalyze the transfer of glycosyl groups to acceptors, is highly expressed in glia and crucial for Drosophila lifespan.

It is now understood that brain metastases do not occur randomly but have distinct spatial patterns depending on the origin of the cancer. According to the "seed and soil" hypothesis, the final colonization of metastatic cells is the result of their adaptation to the altered environment. To investigate the most favorable microenvironment for brain metastasis, we analyzed neuroimaging data from 177 patients with breast cancer brain metastasis and 548 patients with lung cancer brain metastasis to create a replicable probabilistic map of metastatic locations.

Mental health disorders emerge from complex interactions among neurobiological processes across multiple scales, which poses challenges in uncovering pathological pathways from molecular dysfunction to neuroimaging changes. Here, we proposed a multiscale fusion (mFusion) method to evaluate the relevance of each gene to the neuroimaging traits of mental health disorders. We combined gene-neuroimaging associations with gene-positron emission tomography (PET) and PET-neuroimaging associations using protein-protein interaction networks, where various genes traced by PET maps are involved in neurotransmission.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IDD)-induced lower back pain (LBP) brings heavy burden worldwide. In the degenerated intervertebral disc, there is an increase in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the infiltration of M1 macrophages, which leads to abnormal local inflammatory microenvironment and exacerbates IDD. In this study, we developed a novel injectable polyethylene glycol (PEG)-capped cerium ion-manganese ion (Ce-Mn) bimetallic nanozyme (CeMn-PEG) with strong ROS scavenging and M2-type macrophage polarizing abilities to efficiently alleviate IDD.

Why fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels increase markedly in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unknown. Recently, we found that phosphate stimulates renal production of glycerol-3-phosphate (G-3-P), which circulates to bone to trigger FGF23 production. To assess the impact of G-3-P on FGF23 production in CKD, we compared the effect of adenine-induced CKD in mice deficient in glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase 1 (Gpd1), an enzyme that synthesizes G-3-P, along with wild-type littermates.
