Article Synopsis
  • A new two-photon fluorescent probe (J1) was developed to selectively stain nucleolar RNA, identified from a series of three similar compounds (J1-J3).
  • The compounds were tested for their optical properties, showing significant Stokes shifts and two-photon absorption capabilities in the near-infrared region, which supports the use of J1 for specific imaging.
  • J1 demonstrated high selectivity for binding to nucleolar RNA compared to cytosolic RNA, making it a promising tool for visualizing rRNA in living cells through various experimental methods.

Floral nectar can affect the fitness of insect-pollinated plants, through both attraction and manipulation of pollinators. Self-incompatible insect-pollinated plants receive more insect visits than their self-compatible relatives, and the nectar of such species might face increased risk of infestation by pathogens carried by pollinators than self-compatible plants. Proteins in nectar (nectarins) play an important role in protecting the nectar, but little is known regarding nectarins in self-incompatible species.

Affiliated Hospital of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine; Key Laboratory of New Drug Delivery System of Chinese Materia Medica, Jiangsu Province Academy of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, Jiangsu; College of Pharmacy, Anhui University of Chinese Medicine, Hefei, Anhui.

Oleanolic acid (OA) is a triterpenoid found in various fruits and vegetables and used in traditional Chinese medicine. OA plays a crucial role in the treatment of several cancers, but poor water solubility, low permeability, and significant efflux have limited its widespread clinical use. Vitamin E-d-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol succinate (vitamin E-TPGS) and Pluronic P105 were used to improve the solubility and permeability and to decrease the efflux of OA.

Low-cost adsorbents have been continuously developed for heavy metal removal, but little information is available concerning the follow-up treatment of the toxic metal-laden adsorbents. In this study, an optional strategy was provided for the further treatment of heavy metal-impregnated low-cost adsorbents through employing them for phosphate retention. The enhancement of phosphate adsorption by the sorbed lead was first validated using several types of raw or modified waste biomass.

Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale and School of Life Sciences, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, Anhui, 230027, People's Republic of China.

Three-dimensional structural determination combined with comprehensive comparisons with the homologs is a straightforward strategy to decipher the molecular function of an enzyme. However, in many cases it's difficult to obtain the complex structure with the substrate/ligand. Structure-based molecular simulation provides an alternative solution to predict the binding pattern of a substrate/ligand to the enzyme.

Key Laboratory for Plant Diversity and Biogeography of East Asia, Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming, 650204, China.

Class II and III chitinases belonging to different glycoside hydrolase families were major nectarins in Rhododendron irroratum floral nectar which showed significant chitinolytic activity. Previous studies have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in plant floral nectar, but the molecular basis for the mechanism is still poorly understood. Two chitinases, class II (Rhchi2) and III (Rhchi3), were characterized from alkaline Rhododendron irroratum nectar by both SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry.

Rational design of specific ratiometric viscosity probes with small molecular weight is a challenge in practical biotechnology applications. Herein two novel water-soluble, small-molecular ratiometric probes, bearing -methyl benzothiazolium moiety (DSF and DBF), are designed for two-photon fluorescent imaging as a functional of local viscosity. The dye DSF, a light-up fluorescent probe, is sensitive to local viscosity and selectively stains nuclear DNA, which can be used to inspect asynchronous cells under confocal microscopy.
