Background: The clinical effects and detailed roles of long non-coding RNA (LncRNA) steroid receptor RNA activator 1 (SRA1) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remain ambiguous. In the present study, the complementary sites between lncRNA SRA1, miRNA-363-5p, and phospholysine phosphohistidine inorganic pyrophosphate phosphatase (LHPP) predicted bioinformatics analysis stimulated us to hypothesize that miRNA-363-5p/LHPP axis might be required for SRA1-mediated ESCC progression.

Aim: To investigate the molecular events of SRA1 in the malignant behavior in ESCC.

Background: Postoperative adjuvant transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (PA-TACE) can achieve longer overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients with microvascular invasion (MVI). We investigated whether this treatment strategy could benefit these patients by mediating the dysfunctional immunological status. Therefore, a retrospective cohort study was conducted to investigate the effect of early PA-TACE in HCC patients with MVI by measuring the levels of T helper cell 17 (Th17) and regulatory T cell (Treg).

Despite the progress made in the management of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), the overall prognosis for LUAD individuals remains suboptimal. While the role of cell polarity in tumor invasion and metastasis is well established, its prognostic significance in LUAD is still unknown. Differential analysis was performed on the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA)-LUAD and normal lung tissue, and candidate genes were identified by intersecting differentially expressed genes with polarity-related genes (PRGs).

January 2024

Department of General Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, Medical College of Nantong University, Nantong, China.

Background: Transmembrane protein 43 (), a member of the TMEM subfamily, is encoded by a highly conserved gene and widely expressed in most species from bacteria to humans. In previous studies, TMEM43 has been found to play an important role in a variety of tumors. However, the role of TMEM43 in cancer remains unclear.

As a pivotal defensive line against multitudinous malignant tumors, natural killer (NK) cells exist in the tumor microenvironment (TME). RAD18 E3 Ubiquitin Protein Ligase (RAD18) has been reported to foster the malignant progression of multiple cancers, but its effect on NK function has not been mined. Here, the study was designed to mine the mechanism by which RAD18 regulates the killing effect of NK cells on colorectal cancer (CRC) cells.

Research progress in artificial intelligence assisted diabetic retinopathy diagnosis.

Int J Ophthalmol

September 2023

Department of Endocrinology, First People's Hospital of Huzhou, Huzhou University, Huzhou 313000, Zhejiang Province, China.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most common retinal vascular diseases and one of the main causes of blindness worldwide. Early detection and treatment can effectively delay vision decline and even blindness in patients with DR. In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) models constructed by machine learning and deep learning (DL) algorithms have been widely used in ophthalmology research, especially in diagnosing and treating ophthalmic diseases, particularly DR.

Background: The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score is a marker used to evaluate end-stage liver disease in patients with liver failure and is suggested to be valuable in evaluating heart diseases such as heart failure. Because patients with heart failure and myocardial infarction often use anticoagulants, there is an impact on the international normalized ratio (INR). Therefore, removing the INR from MELD score to form MELD-XI score may help to more accurately evaluate the cardiac function in patients with heart failure.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence and cause of unplanned readmission after Surgically Treated Hip Fractures in Elderly Patients and identify the associated risk factors.

Methods: This study retrospectively collected the data on elderly patients who underwent hip fracture surgery at two institutions from January 2020 to December 2021, and identified those who were readmitted within 12 months postoperatively. Based on the presence or not of postoperative readmission, they were divided into readmission and non-readmission groups.

Neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio may be a useful marker in distinguishing MOGAD and MS and platelet to lymphocyte ratio associated with MOGAD activity.

Mult Scler Relat Disord

March 2023

Department of Neurology, Affiliated Nanjing Brain Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210029, China. Electronic address:

Background And Objective: Clinical overlap is observed between multiple sclerosis (MS) and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein immunoglobulin-G (MOG-IgG) associated disease (MOGAD) and the difficulty in distinguishing between the two diseases. Here, we measured and compared the readily available neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR) to determine whether these three biomarkers can help to distinguish MOGAD and MS at disease onset. The impact of these three biomarkers on MOGAD and MS relapse also needs to be explored.

Aberrant expression of microRNA-497 (miR-497) is associated with tumor progression, but the molecular mechanisms in tumorigenesis remain largely unknown. Here, we report that miR-497 expression is downregulated in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) clinical samples. Consistently, upregulation of miR-497 inhibits ESCC cell malignant properties and tumor growth in vivo.

Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is one of the most common malignant diseases of the hematopoietic system in children. Although the etiology of ALL is unknown, it has been reported that it may be associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of EBV infection on the clinical features and prognosis of childhood ALL.

Objectives: The accuracy of non-invasive liver fibrosis diagnosis based on the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value combined with the γ-glutamyl transpeptidase-to-platelet ratio (GPR) model to predict the stage of hepatitis B-related fibrosis has not been reported. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of ADC value combined with GPR for liver fibrosis grading.

Methods: The data of 180 patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) diagnosed by liver biopsy were analyzed.

Enhancer of Zeste Homologue 2 (EZH2) as a histone methyltransferase epigenetically regulates laryngeal carcinoma (LGC) progression. The present study sought to explore the role and mechanism of EZH2 in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of LGC cells. Expressions of EZH2, secreted frizzled-related protein 1 (SFRP1), and trimethylation of lysine 27 on histone H3 (H3K27me3) in LGC tissues or cells were detected via reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blotting.

Diabetic retinopathy is a heterogeneous retinal degenerative disease with the microvascular dysfunction being recognized as a hallmark of the advanced stage. In this study, we demonstrated that exosomes collected from the vitreous humor of proliferative diabetic retinopathy patients promoted proliferation, migration and tube formation ability of primary human retinal endothelial cells via its elevated miR-9-3p expression level. Müller glia cells were further recognized as the sole source of the aberrantly expressed miR-9-3p, and both and experiments validated that Müller glia-derived exosomes aggravate vascular dysfunction under high glucose.

Article Synopsis
  • PM2.5 exposure is linked to the development of atherosclerosis by causing endothelial cell dysfunction.
  • In studies with mice and human endothelial cells, PM2.5 led to increased proinflammatory cytokines and reduced cell viability and migration.
  • The mechanism involves NLRP3 inflammasome activation, which decreases the expression of eNOS and increases reactive oxygen species levels, indicating a potential pathway for PM2.5-induced endothelial damage.
