The purpose of this trial was to clinically assess the effect and safety of Adipose Tissue-derived Stem Cells (ADSCs) treatment on primary Sjogren's Syndrome (pSS). In this 6-month randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, pSS patients were randomly assigned to two groups. After demographic characteristics and clinical examination were achieved, local injection of ADSCs into bilateral glands was performed with patients in ADSCs group (n = 35) and placebo solution was used for another group (n = 39) at three time points.

Background & Objectives: Due to the hidden pathogen, carotid artery stenosis (CAS) always occurred at an advanced stage leading to serious sequelae and even deaths. The significance of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) prostate cancer antigen 3 (PCA3) in CAS incidence and progression were evaluated aiming to explore a potential target for its therapy.

Materials And Methods: Serum samples were collected from 83 asymptomatic CAS patients and 52 healthy individuals and PCA3 was compared using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Effect of knee arthroscopic debridement combined with peripatellar denervation on restoration of knee function in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

BMC Surg

August 2023

Department of Bone Trauma and Arthrology, Huai'an Hospital, No. 19, Shanyang Avenue, Huai'an District, Huai'an, 223200, Jiangsu Province, China.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study of 211 patients was conducted, comparing 116 patients who received only arthroscopic debridement with 95 patients who also underwent denervation; outcomes were measured using pain scoring and mobility assessments.
  • * Results showed that the observation group (debridement + denervation) had a significantly higher treatment efficiency, suggesting that combining treatments could offer better results for OA patients, although no differences were seen in surgery duration or hospital stay between the two groups.

Drug resistance is a major impediment to the successful treatment of glioma. This study aimed to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of the long noncoding RNA membrane-associated guanylate kinase inverted-2 antisense RNA 3 (MAGI2-AS3) on temozolomide (TMZ) resistance in glioma cells. MAGI2-AS3 expression in TMZ-resistant glioblastoma (GBM) cells was analyzed using the Gene Expression Omnibus data set GSE113510 and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR).

Higher serum lipocalin 2 is associated with post-stroke depression at discharge.

BMC Neurol

August 2023

Department of Neurology, Affiliated Huai'an Hospital of Xuzhou Medical University, No.62, South Huaihai Road, Huai'an 223002, Huai'an, 223002, Jiangsu, China.

Background And Aims: Post-stroke depression (PSD), as one of the common complications after stroke, seriously affects the physical and mental health and functional prognosis of patients. Previous studies have shown that the increase of inflammatory mediators is associated with the occurrence of PSD. Lipocalin 2 (LCN2), as an acute phase protein, is involved in the development of acute ischemic stroke (AIS), and its expression is up-regulated in patients with depression, suggesting that there is a potential correlation between serum LCN2 and depression.

Previous studies have shown that the elevated levels of circulating branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) are associated with the development of insulin resistance and its complications, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. However, animal models that can mimic the metabolic state of chronically elevated BCAAs in humans are rare. Therefore, the aim of this study was to establish the above animal model and analyse the metabolic changes associated with high BCAA levels.

Radiotherapy (RT) is one of the key methods for treating breast cancer. However, the effect of single RT is often poor because of insufficient deposition of X-rays in tumor sites and radiation resistance induced by the abnormal tumor microenvironment (overexpression of glutathione (GSH)). The development of multifunctional RT sensitizers and synergetic therapeutic strategies is, therefore, a promising area for enhancing the anticancer effect of RT.

Acute kidney injury (AKI), mainly caused by Ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI), is a common and severe life-threatening disease with high mortality. Accumulating evidence suggested a direct relationship between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response and AKI progression. However, the role of the transmissible ER stress response, a new modulator of cell-to-cell communication, in influencing intercellular communication between renal tubular epithelial cells (TECs) and macrophages in the AKI microenvironment remains to be determined.

Background: In the otology clinic, we often receive some sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) patients accompanied by annoying tinnitus, who usually visited over three weeks after the onset. Nevertheless, due to the high treatment cost and relatively low cure rate, there are still great disputes about hospitalization or not for these patients. Aim: This study aimed to perform a retrospective analysis for analyzing the efficacy of treatment with oral steroids combined with postauricular steroid injection in patients with delaying effective treatment.

Application of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system: A review.

Int J Biol Macromol

August 2023

Key Laboratory for Palygorskite Science and Applied Technology of Jiangsu Province, Huaiyin Institute of Technology, Huai'an 223003, PR China. Electronic address:

Drug delivery systems have emerged as a prominent research focus in the field of drug development, offering enhanced stability and improved bioavailability. Among them, protein (silk, gelatin and whey) or polysaccharide (alginate, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pectin and carrageenan) aerogels derived from natural sources have gained increasing popularity due to their unique advantages, such as cost-effectiveness, flexible preparation, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, despite their growing significance, there remains a lack of comprehensive information and ongoing confusion regarding the application of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system.

Recently, epigenetics showed essential roles in tumour microenvironment (TME) and immunotherapy response, however, the functions of RNA 5-methylcytosine (m5C) modification in TME remains unknown. According to 13 m5C regulators, we evaluated 412 BLCA patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. The m5C score was constructed by unsupervised clustering analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) algorithms.

Infiltration of CD4 + T cells was found in brain tissue samples from PD patients, suggesting their involvement in developing central nervous system (CNS) disease. The idea of the gut-brain axis further corroborates intestinal T cells' activation as the central immune response initiation. However, the specific factors and molecular pathways regulating intestinal T-cell activation are unclear.

Background: The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score is a marker used to evaluate end-stage liver disease in patients with liver failure and is suggested to be valuable in evaluating heart diseases such as heart failure. Because patients with heart failure and myocardial infarction often use anticoagulants, there is an impact on the international normalized ratio (INR). Therefore, removing the INR from MELD score to form MELD-XI score may help to more accurately evaluate the cardiac function in patients with heart failure.
