Article Synopsis
  • Tetrandrine (TET) is a traditional Chinese medicine with potential to combat SARS-CoV-2; this study aimed to understand its lung concentration and effectiveness using a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model.
  • The researchers conducted pharmacokinetic studies in rats and dogs to create an animal-specific PBPK model, then validated it for human use by comparing it with existing human data on TET dosages.
  • The findings indicated that TET's concentration in the lungs at clinically recommended doses exceeds the necessary level to inhibit SARS-CoV-2, thereby supporting the potential repurposing of TET for COVID-19 treatment.

Department of Orthopedics, Jingling Hospital, Medicine College, Nanjing University, Nanjing, 210002, Jiangsu, China. Electronic address:

There were defects like limited osteogenesis and fast drug release in traditional magnesium phosphate bone cement (MPC). In this study, we loaded icariin in a mesoporous nano silica container modified by polydopamine and then added it and citric acid into MPC (IHP-CA MPCs). The results indicate that IHP-CA MPCs have a long curing time, almost neutral pH value, excellent injectability, and compressive strength.

Background: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease that was caused by the (DBV), and it has become a global public health threat. Cytokine storm is considered to be an important pathogenesis of critical SFTS. Tripartite motif-containing 3 (TRIM3), as a member of the TRIM protein family, may contribute to the regulation of the immune and inflammatory responses after viral infection.

National Health Commission Key Laboratory of Antibody Techniques, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 211166, China.

c-Met is a hepatocyte growth factor receptor overexpressed in many tumors such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, c-Met may serve as a promising target for HCC immunotherapy. Modifying T cells to express c-Met-specific chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) is an attractive strategy in treating c-Met-positive HCC.

It is imminent to develop a new type of rapid COVID-19 detection method with high sensitivity. Here, we used novel red emission-enhanced carbon dot (CD)-based silica (RCS) spheres as the signals of lateral flow immunochromatography (LFI) to ultrasensitively detect novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 nucleocapsid proteins (SARS-CoV-2 NPs). The red emission of CDs can be enhanced and enriched in silica spheres by a simple way.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a newly emerging tick-borne virus with a fatality rate between 12% and 50%. Currently, effective vaccines or antiviral drugs are not available to treat SFTSV infection, and a diagnostic method for its detecting is urgently needed. Monoclonal (MAb) and polyclonal antibodies (PAbs) against SFTSV were prepared by immunizing animals with the SFTSV nucleocapsid protein (NP).

Anal Chem

February 2021

Jiangsu Province Hi-Tech Key Laboratory for Bio-medical Research, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Southeast University, Nanjing 211189, China.

In this work, a low triggered potential electrochemiluminescence strategy based on gold-filled photonic crystals (GPCs) electrodes composed of photonic crystals self-assembled with polystyrene spheres and gold nanoparticles embedded in the gaps of the photonic crystals was proposed. The GPCs electrodes served as the detection platform to bind antigen, and Ru(bpy)-COOH as a luminophore was labeled on the antibody (Ab). Then, Ru(bpy)-COOH/Ab was connected to the immobilized antigen on the surface of the photonic crystals by the immunoreaction to avoid direct contact with the gold nanoparticles surface.

  • The study examined the distinct effects of high- and low-molecular weight hyaluronic acids (HMW-HA and LMW-HA) on inflammation, focusing specifically on the bioactive hyaluronan (B-HA) derived from HA treated with a specific enzyme.
  • B-HA was tested on human macrophages and a mouse model to assess its impact on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation, with results showing B-HA reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines while increasing anti-inflammatory ones like IL-10.
  • The findings suggest that B-HA inhibits crucial signaling pathways involved in inflammation, pointing to its potential as an anti-inflammatory treatment.

Previous studies have revealed that activation of the Toll‑like receptor 4 (TLR4)‑mediated proinflammatory signaling pathway plays an important role in acute inflammation, sepsis and chronic inflammatory disorders. Moreover, TLR4 significantly contributes to lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‑induced immune response. Thus, modulation of the TLR4 pathway is an important strategy to specifically target these pathologies.

Department of Cardiology, Nanjing University Medical School Affiliated Nanjing, Drum Tower Hospital, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

The current study was designed to examine the protection of RAGE-specific inhibitor FPS-ZM1 against renal injury in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and investigate the underlying mechanism. The adult male SHR were treated with FPS-ZM1 via oral gavages for 12 weeks, and age-matched male Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) were used as control. Treatment of SHR with FPS-ZM1 slightly reduced blood pressure, and significantly improved baroreflex sensitivity in SHR.
