Human babesiosis, caused by several parasites and transmitted by tick bites and other blood-associated containments, has emerged as a major public health threat around the world. In the absence of readily discernible clinical manifestations, the diagnosis of human babesiosis has been contingent upon the identification of parasites through the utilization of detection arrays. Nevertheless, cases of persistent and relapsing babesiosis with low-grade parasitemia have been sporadically observed in patients with and without immunosuppression, prompting a challenge to the reliability of routine clinical laboratory tests and efficient anti-babesial therapy.

Tumor-derived cell-free DNA (cfDNA) has been exploited as an effective liquid biopsy biomarker for early cancer diagnosis. However, the fragmented and low-abundance nature in circulating blood pose challenges for highly sensitive cfDNA quantification. Herein, a multifunctional plasmonic biosensor termed Interfacial cfDNA Enrichment, Amplification and Sensing with on-chip Thermoplasmonics (INEAST) is developed for cfDNA-based liquid biopsy and lung cancer diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a chronic pain condition with unclear causes, which leads to lower urinary tract issues and has shown inconsistent treatment results due to its complex nature.
  • - Researchers created a mouse model of IC/BPS using specific chemicals and tested the effects of artesunate (ART), finding significant symptom relief and histological improvements, alongside identifying key gene modules related to the condition.
  • - The study reveals changes in immune cells related to IC/BPS and represents a pioneering approach using single-cell transcriptomics to understand the immune environment, suggesting ART's potential therapeutic role, although further patient-focused studies are necessary.

Glob Med Genet

December 2024

Department of Respiratory Medicine, Affiliated Jinling Hospital, Medical School of Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China.

Article Synopsis
  • FGFR is a vital receptor involved in growth and tissue repair, but its gene mutations can lead to cancer by disrupting essential processes.
  • Small molecule drugs and antibodies targeting FGFR mutations, like erdafitinib and pemigatinib, have shown clinical efficacy in treating certain cancer types.
  • Effective screening methods for FGFR variants are essential for utilizing FGFR inhibitors in treatment, and a consensus has been developed to standardize diagnosis and treatment processes.

ANGPTL4-mediated microglial lipid droplet accumulation: Bridging Alzheimer's disease and obesity.

Neurobiol Dis

December 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Clinical Geriatric Medicine, Huadong Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, Shanghai 200040, China; Shanghai institute of geriatric medicine, Huadong Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, Shanghai 200040, China. Electronic address:

Increasing evidence suggests that metabolic disorders such as obesity are implicated in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The pathological buildup of lipids in microglia is regarded as a key indicator in brain aging and the progression of AD, yet the mechanisms behind this process remain uncertain. The adipokine ANGPTL4 is strongly associated with obesity and is thought to play a role in the advancement of neurodegenerative diseases.
