Background: Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and hemiplegia are common disorders that directly cause impairment of balance and gait. Aquatic exercises are used for neurological rehabilitation. It is suggested that the contributing factors of the water setting such as buoyancy, viscosity, and hydrostatic pressure offer an ideal environment for rehabilitative programmes.

Rhizomes of Zingiber cassumunar have been used for many years in traditional Thai medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent. The major bioactive component of this plant is Compound D [E-4-(3', 4'-dimethoxyphenyl)but-3-en-1-ol], which is a strong smooth muscle relaxant, and has antihistamine and anti-inflammatory actions. There is, however, incomplete information available for the pharmacokinetics of Compound D in mammals.

Hookworm infection is still prevalent in southern Thailand despite control measures. Hookworm eggs submerged for an extended period under water from rainfall or in latrines may not survive, but they may recover their ability to develop into infective larvae when exposed to atmospheric air. This study examined the survival of the hookworm eggs in stool suspension and the restoration of development capability after prolonged storage.

A major limitation of electrical field-flow fractionation (ElFFF) is the polarization of the electrodes that occurs when using an ionic carrier liquid. As there is great interest in using ElFFF with biological materials and biological materials typically have high ionic strengths and high osmotic concentrations, we explore the effect of concentration for phosphate buffered saline (PBS), a typical ionic medium for biological samples, and for two nonionic materials common in bioparticle analysis: isopropanol (IPA) and sucrose. Their effect on retention and separations in ElFFF for increasing concentrations was observed.

The potential of biased cyclical electrical field-flow fractionation (BCyElFFF), which applies the positive cycle voltage longer than the negative cycle voltage, for characterization of submicron particles, was investigated. Parameters affecting separation and retention such as voltage, frequency, and duty cycle were examined. The results suggest that the separation mechanism in BCyElFFF in many cases is more related to the size of particles, as is the case with normal ElFFF, in the studied conditions, than the electrophoretic mobility, which is what the theory predicts for CyElFFF.

This study was designed to examine the vasorelaxant effects of hexahydrocurcumin (HHC), one of the major natural metabolites of curcumin from Curcuma longa, on rat isolated aortic rings, and the underlying mechanisms. Isometric tension of the aortic rings was recorded using organ bath system. HHC (1 nM to 1 mM) relaxed the endothelium-intact aortic rings pre-contracted with PE and KCl in a concentration-dependent manner.

Several lines of evidence have demonstrated that Aβ-induced neuronal death is mediated by oxidative stress. This is the first report on human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allele and haplotype frequencies at three class I loci and two class II loci in unrelated healthy individuals from two ethnic groups, 170 Burmese and 200 Karen, originally from Burma (Myanmar), but sampled while residing in Thailand. Overall, the HLA allele and haplotype frequencies detected by polymerase chain reaction sequence-specific primer (PCR-SSP) at five loci (A, B, C, DRB1 and DRQB1) at low resolution showed distinct differences between the Burmese and Karen. In Burmese, five HLA-B*15 haplotypes with different HLA-A and HLA-DR/DQ combinations were detected with three of these not previously reported in other Asian populations.

We have previously reported that curcumin analogs with a C7 linker bearing a C4-C5 olefinic linker with a single keto group at C3 (enone linker) display midnanomolar activity against the bloodstream form of Trypanosoma brucei. However, no clear indication of their mechanism of action or superior antiparasitic activity relative to analogs with the original di-ketone curcumin linker was apparent. To further investigate their utility as antiparasitic agents, we compare the cellular effects of curcumin and the enone linker lead compound 1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hept-4-en-3-one (AS-HK014) here.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative and progressive disorder. The hallmark of pathological AD is amyloid plaque which is the accumulation of amyloid β (Aβ) in extracellular neuronal cells and neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) in neuronal cells, which lead to neurotoxicity via reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation related apoptosis. Loss of synapses and synaptic damage are the best correlates of cognitive decline in AD.

A general method for the synthesis of substituted (1E,4E,6E)-1,7-diphenylhepta-1,4,6-trien-3-ones, based on the aldol condensations of substituted 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-ones and substituted 3-phenylacrylaldehydes, was achieved. Cyst enlargement in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is associated with cAMP-activated proliferation of cyst-lining epithelial cells and transepithelial fluid secretion into the cyst lumen via cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) chloride channel leading to renal failure for which no effective treatment is currently available. We previously reported that steviol retards Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cyst enlargement by inhibiting CFTR channel activity and promoting proteasomal-mediated CFTR degradation. It is imperative to examine the effect of steviol in animal models of ADPKD.
