The rapid spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has led to a large number of patients being admitted to hospitals, resulting in a near collapse of the medical system. The shortage of negative pressure isolation rooms and personal protective equipment is a potential problem. It is a pressing challenge to prevent the risk of infection in emergency physicians (EPs) during the endotracheal intubation of patients with COVID-19.

Background/purpose: To evaluate whether a shorter length (20 cm) of C-UCM has potential benefits, compared to immediate cord clamping (ICC), in very preterm babies.
Methods: Inborn preterm infants less than 30 weeks of gestational age (GA) were randomly assigned to the 20-cm C-UMC and ICC groups. The primary outcome was the need for packed red blood cell (pRBC) transfusion before the 21st day of life.

Melanoma is the most lethal form of skin cancer, which is intrinsically resistant to conventional chemotherapy. Combination therapy has been developed to overcome this challenge and show synergistic anticancer effects on melanoma. Notably, the histone deacetylase inhibitor, valproic acid (VPA), has been indicated as a potential sensitizer of chemotherapy drugs on various metastatic cancers, including advanced melanoma.

Background: Health-care providers typically undergo shift work and are subjected to increased stress. Night shift work may induce disturbed sleep cycles and circadian rhythm. The objective of this study was to explore if night shift workers (NSWs) show an increased risk of abnormal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Background: This study used a real-world database to investigate the prescription patterns of sacubitril/valsartan (Sac/Val) among Taiwanese patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
Methods: The Treatment with Angiotensin Receptor neprilysin inhibitor fOr Taiwan Heart Failure patients (TAROT-HF) study is a principal investigator-initiated, multicenter, observational, retrospective study on Taiwanese HFrEF patients. A total of 1772 patients with HFrEF (mean age 62.

Macular edema (ME) is a common cause of visual loss among eyes with uveitis, and its management can be challenging. Steroids are an effective treatment for ME, and intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implants provide sustained steroid release. The purpose of this study is to evaluate intravitreal DEX implant on refractory ME in eyes with noninfectious uveitis.

Autosomal dominant (AD) NFKB1 deficiency is thought to be the most common genetic etiology of common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). However, the causal link between NFKB1 variants and CVID has not been demonstrated experimentally and genetically, and there has been insufficient biochemical characterization and enrichment analysis. We show that the cotransfection of NFKB1-deficient HEK293T cells (lacking both p105 and its cleaved form p50) with a κB reporter, NFKB1/p105, and a homodimerization-defective RELA/p65 mutant results in p50:p65 heterodimer-dependent and p65:p65 homodimer-independent transcriptional activation.

Objective: Deficits of mismatch negativity (MMN), a general index of echoic memory function, have been documented in patients with schizophrenia. However, it remains controversial whether patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) demonstrate MMN defects compared with healthy controls (HC).
Methods: After screening 41 potential studies identified in PubMed and Medline, 13 studies consisting of 343 HC and 339 patients with MDD were included in the present meta-analysis.

As the most common gene mutation found in cancers, p53 mutations are detected in up to 96% of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC). Meanwhile, mutant p53 overexpression is known to drive oncogenic phenotypes in cancer patients and to sustain the activation of EGFR signaling. Previously, we have demonstrated that the combined inhibition of EGFR and MDM2-p53 pathways, by gefitinib and JNJ-26854165, exerts a strong synergistic lethal effect on HGSOC cells.

The CXC chemokine ligand-13 (CXCL13) is a chemoattractant of B cells and has been implicated in the progression of many cancers. So far, CXCL13 and its related receptor CXCR5 have been proved to regulate cancer cell migration as well as tumour metastasis. However, the role of CXCL13-CXCR5 axis in metastasis of lung cancer is still poorly understood.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has had an enormous impact worldwide, and vaccination is believed to be the method that will control the pandemic. Several types of vaccines developed using different platforms have been authorized, but the immunogenicity and reactogenicity of heterologous prime-boost vaccination with different vaccines remain largely unclear.
Areas Covered: Electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, medRxiv, Research Square, and SSRN were searched to investigate the immunogenicity and reactogenicity associated with heterologous vaccination.

Estrogen (E) has multiple functions in breast cancers including stimulating cancer growth and interfering with chemotherapeutic efficacy. Heteronemin, a marine sesterterpenoid-type natural product, has cytotoxicity on cancer cells. Breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, were used for investigating mechanisms involved in inhibitory effect of E on heteronemin-induced anti-proliferation in breast cancer cells with different estrogen receptor (ER) status.

Aims: Ivabradine has been used in patients who have chronic heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and concomitant sinus heart rate ≥70 bpm. This administration for acute HFrEF remains a concern. This study used a real-world multicentre database to investigate the effects of ivabradine among patients with acute decompensated HFrEF before discharge.

Real-world experience with dolutegravir (DTG) plus boosted protease inhibitor (bPI) as a two-drug regimen is limited for highly experienced HIV-positive patients with virological failure or intolerance to antiretroviral therapy. Patients receiving DTG plus bPI between September 2016 and June 2019 at 15 designated hospitals for HIV care in Taiwan were retrospectively included in this study. A standardised case record form was used to collect clinical data.

Although previous studies have investigated the relationship between fracture risk and type 2 diabetes (T2D), cohort studies that estimate composite osteoporosis risk are lacking. This retrospective cohort study sought to determine the risk of osteoporosis in Taiwanese patients with T2D. Patients diagnosed with T2D between 2002 and 2015 identified through the 2002 Taiwan Survey of Hypertension, Hyperglycemia, and Hyperlipidemia were included.

Objective: We present prenatal diagnosis of a familial Y long-arm and chromosome 15 short-arm translocation inherited from a mother carrier.
Case Report: A 34-year-old primigravid woman underwent amniocentesis at 20 weeks of gestation because of advanced maternal age. Amniocentesis revealed a derived chromosome 15 or 15p+ with an additional material on the short arm of chromosome 15.

Rhabdomyomatous mesenchymal hamartoma (RMH) is a rare benign tumor composed of skeletal muscle fibers and other mesenchymal-derived cells. The lesions are generally solitary sessile papules or skin tag lesions that occur during childhood. We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with RMH pathologically between January 2001 and June 2020 at a tertiary medical center.

The application of antifibrotic materials can alleviate epidural fibrosis by restricting excessive fibroblast proliferation and mitigating scar tissue formation. Here, a biodegradable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP)-resveratrol (RES) sponge was fabricated to inhibit scar tissue formation post laminectomy surgery. Fibroblasts NIH/3T3, myoblasts C2C12, neural cells PC-12, and Schwann cells RSC96 were used to evaluate the in vitro cytocompatibility.
