Anisotropic materials with low symmetries hold significant promise for next-generation electronic and quantum devices. 2M-WS, which is a candidate for topological superconductivity, has garnered considerable interest. However, a comprehensive understanding of how its anisotropic features contribute to unconventional superconductivity, along with a simple, reliable method to identify its crystal orientation, remains elusive.

Cured-in-place-pipe (CIPP) technology has begun to be adopted for drinking water pipe repairs, and limited information exists about its drinking water quality impacts. CIPP involves the manufacture of a new plastic pipe inside a buried damaged pipe. In this study, the chemical composition of the raw materials and CIPP water quality impacts were examined.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) during pregnancy can increase the prevalence of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-induced generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCSs) in developing rats. However, it is unclear whether phenobarbital (PB) can suppress these PAE-related seizures. To explore this knowledge gap, we investigated the effects of acute PB treatment on NMDA-induced seizures in postpartum rats, prenatally exposed to alcohol on gestational day 18 (GD18), at two developmental stages: day 7 (P7), the equivalent of pre-term neonates, and day 15 (P15), the equivalent of full-term neonates.

Stress is a major contributing factor to binge drinking and development of alcohol use disorders (AUD), particularly in women. Both stress and chronic ethanol can enhance neuroinflammatory processes, which may dysregulate limbic circuits involved in ethanol reinforcement. Clinical and preclinical studies have identified sex differences in alcohol intake in response to neuroinflammatory triggers.

Background: Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) has been employed for post-surgical wound management across various disciplines, including spinal surgery. However, its efficacy in reducing wound infection rates following posterior thoracolumbar spine surgery remains uncertain.
Methods: A retrospective review was conducted at a single institution, examining 266 patients who underwent posterior thoracic, lumbar, or thoracolumbar spine surgery performed by one neurosurgeon.

Fouling-resistant coating materials have important applications in marine industry and biomedicine. Zwitterionic carboxybetaine polymers have demonstrated robust antibiofouling functionalities in experiments. In this work, we performed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to study the molecular mechanism of hydration and antibiofouling of poly(carboxybetaine acrylamide) (polyCBAA) brush surfaces.

A century ago it was discovered that metabolic processes in living cells emit a spectrum of very low intensity radiation. This was based on observations that radiant energy from proliferating cells can amplify the rate of cell division in other nearby cellular life. Although metabolic radiation is now thoroughly documented in research on ultraweak photon emissions (UPE), the original finding that UPE can enhance mitogenesis remains controversial.

Rhabdomyolysis, a severe condition marked by the breakdown of muscle tissue, leads to the release of intracellular contents into the bloodstream. This condition can be triggered by a range of factors, including intense physical activity, traumatic injuries, certain medications, and infections. Diagnosis typically involves detecting elevated creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels alongside characteristic clinical symptoms.

Copper (Cu) is essential for brain development and function, yet its overload induces neuronal damage and contributes to neurodegeneration and other neurological disorders. Multiple studies demonstrated that Cu neurotoxicity is associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, routinely assessed by reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. Nonetheless, the role of alterations of mitochondrial dynamics in brain mitochondrial dysfunction induced by Cu exposure is still debatable.

Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is transmitted by the black-legged tick and presents with fever, thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia, and elevated transaminases. If left untreated, HGA can progress to hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), which can be fatal. Here, we discuss a case of a woman diagnosed with anaplasmosis who was treated promptly.

The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs.

This study examined the effects of heat treatment on the microstructure and dynamic deformation characteristics of AA2519 aluminum alloy in T4, T6, and T8 tempers under high strain rates of 1000-4000 s. A Split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) was utilized to characterize the mechanical response, and microstructural analysis was performed to examine the material's microstructure. The findings indicated varied deformation across all three temper conditions.
