Management of circulatory unstable pelvic fracture in Greenland - from a remote village to Level 1 Trauma center. This case report depicts the transportation of an unstable patient in a rural area, where transportation of the critically ill patient is inherently difficult due to infrastructure. The case report brings knowledge to the reader of logistic conditions in Greenland, which differ greatly from those in Denmark.

Outcomes following SARS-CoV-2 infection in individuals with and without inflammatory rheumatic diseases: a Danish nationwide cohort study.

Objective: In a setting with an extensive SARS-CoV-2 test strategy and availability of effective vaccines, we aimed to investigate if patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRD) face greater risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 and have a worse prognosis of increased risk of hospitalisation, assisted ventilation and death compared with the general population.

Methods: This was a nationwide, population-based register study that compared outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Danish patients with IRD (n=66 840) with matched population controls (n=668 400). The study period was from March 2020 to January 2023.

[Iatrogenic botulism in therapeutic use of botulinum toxin].

The review summarises the current knowledge of the treatment of iatrogenic botulinum toxin overdose. The symptoms may be diffuse, and suspicion should be raised based on time of symptom appearance relative to the time of exposure. Iatrogenic botulism may appear if the maximum recommended total dose of botulinum toxin has been exceeded and if the drug is spread locally from the site of injection or is redistributed to the systemic circulation.

Effects of Parathyroidectomy on Quality of Life: 10 Years of Data From a Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial on Primary Hyperparathyroidism (the SIPH-Study).

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) was previously considered a disease presenting with multiorgan involvement and a wide range of symptoms. Today, the disease presents with no symptoms or mild symptomatology in most patients. Data regarding nonspecific symptoms such as pain, fatigue, memory loss, depression, and other neuropsychiatric signs have been ambiguous, and results from prospective long-term randomized control trials are lacking.

Occupational therapy and physiotherapy interventions in palliative care: a cross-sectional study of patient-reported needs.

Introduction: An interdisciplinary team approach to patients in specialised palliative care is recommended; however, the composition of the professionals tends to vary, and the roles of physiotherapists and occupational therapists may be underestimated. We aimed to investigate patient-reported unmet needs, which potentially could benefit from physiotherapy and occupational therapy interventions in a specialised palliative care team.

Methods: Adult patients with chronic advanced diseases referred to the Specialised Palliative Care Team at Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet were enrolled in the study.

Ultra-high-fidelity virtual reality mastoidectomy simulation training: a randomized, controlled trial.

Purpose: Ultra-high-fidelity (UHF) graphics in virtual reality (VR) simulation might improve surgical skill acquisition in temporal bone training. This study aims to compare UHF VR simulation training with conventional, screen-based VR simulation training (cVR) with respect to performance and cognitive load (CL).

Methods: In a randomized trial with a cross-over design, 24 students completed a total of four mastoidectomies in a VR temporal bone surgical simulator: two performances under UHF conditions using a digital microscope and two performances under conventional conditions using screen-based VR simulation.

[The initial treatment of multitrauma patients].

Multitrauma is usually defined as injury to several organ systems. The more severe the injury, the higher is the mortality. It is essential that a trauma team assess and treat these patients using a rapid, structured approach in order to increase the survival.

[Anaesthesia for elderly patients].

Elderly surgical patients comprise a heterogeneous population, especially due to extreme variability in the aging process and the prevalence of chronic disease. Providing anaesthesia can be challenging as the sensitivity to anaesthetic agents is generally increased. Careful preoperative assessment is mandatory but can be difficult, and intraoperative care must be tailored to the extent of organ failure.

Suboptimal pain treatment after craniotomy.

Introduction: Only few studies have investigated pain, nausea, sedation and analgesic strategies in post-craniotomy patients. The aim of this observational study was to explore pain, nausea, sedation and analgesic procedures after craniotomy, and to evaluate the quality of current analgesic therapy administered to post-craniotomy patients.

Material And Methods: A total of 59 patients undergoing supratentorial or infratentorial craniotomy were included over a three-month period.

[Neglected non-melanoma skin cancer].

In Denmark the incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) has increased over the past 30 years, and it is presumed that the incidence of neglected NMSC will increase. Neglected NMSC is frequently seen in patients with psychosocial disabilities. If treatment is delayed consequences regarding treatment options and prognosis can be severe.

[Fatal course of a patient during in vitro fertilisation treatment].

Chylomicronaemia syndrome is a rare disorder primarily caused by a genetic defect which increases triglycerides, combined with a secondary inducing factor. We describe the fatal course of a 33-year-old, pregnant woman with known dyslipidaemia who had been treated with in vitro fertilisation and developed chylomicronaemia syndrome with severe hypertriglyceridaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia-induced acute pancreatitis and septic shock. Appropriate treatment including close monitoring, severe restriction of dietary fat intake and early plasmapheresis is emphasized - especially during pregnancy.

[Penetrating trauma treated by the Medical Emergency Care Unit in Copenhagen].

Introduction: The World Health Organization defines violence as a public health problem, affecting mainly boys and young men. Interpersonal violence with sharp objects and arms is rare in Denmark, but has been the focus of attention from the media and general population. This study describes the incidence and characteristics of penetrating trauma treated by the Medical Emergency Care Unit in Copenhagen (MECU) from 2000 to 2007.

[Mechanical cardiac massage].

Continuous delivery of high-quality chest compressions is the most important and difficult part of resuscitation. Two automatic mechanical chest compression devices - LUCAS and Autopulse - have been implemented in Denmark in order to optimize the circulation in patients with cardiac arrest. In spite of some practical benefits, improved haemodynamics in animal models, and a possible increase in short-term survival, none of the devices improved the long-term survival or neurological outcome in patients with cardiac arrest.

[Life-saving prehospital interventions].

Introduction: The Mobile Emergency Care Unit (MECU) in Copenhagen provides prehospital healthcare for the citizens in the Capital Region in case of acute illness or accidents. The aim of this study was to describe the patients whose treatment was categorized by the MECU as lifesaving and to compare these with all other patients.

Material And Methods: We analysed the MECU database contents and ambulance records from 2005 with emphasis on treatment and diagnosis.

[Cognitive deterioration after surgery].

Delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction are important and common complications after surgery. Risk factors are first of all increasing age and type of surgery, whereas the type of anaesthesia does not seem to play an important role. Mortality is higher among patients with cognitive dysfunction than among patients without such dysfunction.

[Advanced resuscitation of adults].

International and European Resuscitation Council (ERC) Guidelines for Resuscitation 2005 implicate major changes in resuscitation, including new universal treatment algorithms. This brief summary of Guidelines 2005 for advanced resuscitation of adult cardiac arrest victims is based upon the ERC Guidelines which also constitute the Danish Resuscitation Council's recommendations.

Introduction: In 2005, new international evidence-based guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) were published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). The aim of these new guidelines is to improve the quality of care and, thereby, the outcome from cardiac arrest. This necessitates that the guidelines are known and implemented in clinical practice.
