Objective: The aim of this study was to provide the evidence base to guide interconversion of the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) in neurological research.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of paired mRS and GOS recordings was conducted using datasets with the following selection criteria: (1) patients had haemorrhagic stroke, (2) simultaneous mRS and GOS measurements were available, and (3) data sharing was possible. Candidate gene studies have identified genetic variants associated with clinical outcomes following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH), but no genome-wide association studies have been performed to date. Here we report the results of the discovery phase of a two-stage genome-wide meta-analysis of outcome after aSAH. We identified 157 independent loci harbouring 756 genetic variants associated with outcome after aSAH (p < 1 × 10), which require validation.

Purpose: This case report describes a unique case of a young patient with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a unilateral Coats-like response, and X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS).

Methods: A 9-year-old boy with a history of regressed ROP presented with a unilateral Coats-like response, subretinal exudation, and XLRS. Examination and imaging findings demonstrated a highly unique combination of bilateral retinoschisis and a dramatic unilateral Coats-like response with a large schisis cavity.

Objectives: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) is used for treatment of acute neurologic conditions such as Guillain-Barre syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy relapse, and myasthenia gravis exacerbation. Precision dosing (adjusted or ideal body weight) is proposed to conserve IVIg. Background: Due to high rates of anatomic variability of the C2 pedicle, thin-sliced pedicular-oriented computed tomography (CT) and 3-dimensional reconstructive CT technologies have been introduced to predict safe C2 pedicle screw placement. However, this technology may not be readily available in all centers. The purpose of this study was to perform a C2 pedicle safe zone analysis using standard sagittal CT scans to predict the feasibility of C2 pedicle screw placement in a pediatric population and to compare the results with our previously obtained safe zone analysis from the adult population.

The purpose of this report is to chronicle a 2-decade period of educational innovation and improvement, as well as governance reform, across the specialty of neurological surgery. Neurological surgery educational and professional governance systems have evolved substantially over the past 2 decades with the goal of improving training outcomes, patient safety, and the quality of US neurosurgical care. Innovations during this period have included the following: creating a consensus national curriculum; standardizing the length and structure of neurosurgical training; introducing educational outcomes milestones and required case minimums; establishing national skills, safety, and professionalism courses; systematically accrediting subspecialty fellowships; expanding professional development for educators; promoting training in research; and coordinating policy and strategy through the cooperation of national stakeholder organizations.

Inhibitory leukocyte immunoglobulin-like receptors (LILRBs 1-5) transduce signals via intracellular immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs that recruit phosphatases to negatively regulate immune activation. The activation of LILRB signaling in immune cells may contribute to immune evasion. In addition, the expression and signaling of LILRBs in cancer cells especially in certain hematologic malignant cells directly support cancer development.

Background: Elucidating the molecular pathogenesis underlying East Texas bleeding disorder (ET) led to the discovery of alternatively spliced F5 transcripts harboring large deletions within exon 13. These alternatively spliced transcripts produce a shortened form of coagulation factor V (FV) in which a large portion of its B-domain is deleted. These FV isoforms bind tissue factor pathway inhibitor alpha (TFPIα) with high affinity, prolonging its circulatory half-life and enhancing its anticoagulant effects.

Only after local recurrence and forequarter amputation was the story of a pathologic fracture through undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas of bone clear.

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a low-grade vascular neoplasm with four well-documented clinical types: classic, African (endemic), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-associated (epidemic), and iatrogenic, as well as a fifth recently described variant, men having sex with men (MSM) without human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Often distinguishable on clinical exam, KS lesions are typically found on the skin and mucosa of immunocompromised individuals, though numerous published reports have demonstrated the ability of KS to present in immunocompetent individuals. Here, we present the case of a 66-year-old, HIV-negative MSM with violaceous, non-blanching macules and patches of the medial foot referred to dermatology by his primary care physician.
