Relapse and survival after transplantation for complex karyotype acute myeloid leukemia: A report from the Acute Leukemia Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Background: Despite recent advances in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (AHSCT), the outcome of patients who have acute myeloid leukemia (AML) with a complex karyotype (CK) remains poor. The objective of this study was to identify prognostic factors associated with post-transplantation survival in a large cohort of patients with CK AML.

Methods: In total, data on 1342 consecutively patients who underwent transplantation for CK (≥3 chromosomal abnormalities) AML were provided by the Acute Leukemia Working Party of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation and from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center database were included in the analysis.

Pharmacogenomic biomarkers do not predict response to drotrecogin alfa in patients with severe sepsis.

Purpose: To explore potential design for pharmacogenomics trials in sepsis, we investigate the interaction between pharmacogenomic biomarkers and response to drotrecogin alfa (activated) (DrotAA). This trial was designed to validate whether previously identified improved response polymorphisms (IRPs A and B) were associated with an improved response to DrotAA in severe sepsis.

Methods: Patients with severe sepsis at high risk of death, who received DrotAA or not, with DNA available were included and matched to controls adjusting for age, APACHE II or SAPS II, organ dysfunction, ventilation, medical/surgical status, infection site, and propensity score (probability that a patient would have received DrotAA given their baseline characteristics).

Assessing polymyalgia rheumatica activity when C-reactive protein is unavailable or uninterpretable.

Objective: The PMR activity score (PMR-AS) includes the CRP value, which may be lacking or invalid owing to anti-IL-6 therapy. Our objective was to develop alternatives to PMR-AS that do not require CRP.

Methods: We used the Club Rhumatisme et Inflammation (CRI; 89 patients with PMR) and the Tolerance and Efficacy of tocilizumab iN pOlymyalgia Rheumatica (TENOR; 20 patients with recent-onset PMR naive to glucocorticoid who received three tocilizumab infusions, at weeks 0, 4 and 8, followed by prednisone from weeks 12 to 24) cohorts.

One-Year Outcome for Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia: Results From the French National Register.

Objective: To evaluate the status of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) management in France and to assess predictors of adverse outcomes.

Study Design: We reviewed the first-year outcome of all cases of CDH reported to the French National Register in 2011.

Results: A total of 158 cases were included.

"It Was the Only Thing I Could Hold Onto, But…": Receiving a Letter of Condolence After Loss of a Loved One in the ICU: A Qualitative Study of Bereaved Relatives' Experience.

Objectives: Family members of patients who die in the ICU often remain with unanswered questions and suffer from lack of closure. A letter of condolence may help bereaved relatives, but little is known about their experience of receiving such a letter. The objective of the study was to understand bereaved family members' experience of receiving a letter of condolence.

No relationship between late HIV diagnosis and social deprivation in newly diagnosed patients in France.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to determine whether there is a relationship between social deprivation and time of HIV diagnosis in France.

Methods: Prospectively collected data from a multicentre database were used in the study. Patients with a first HIV diagnosis between 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2015 were selected from the database.

Neurological failure in ICU patients with hematological malignancies: A prospective cohort study.

Background: Epidemiological studies of neurological complications in patients with hematological malignancies are scant. The objective of the study was to identify determinants of survival in patients with hematological malignancy and neurological failure.

Methods: Post hoc analysis of a prospective study of adults with hematological malignancies admitted for any reason to one of 17 university or university-affiliated participating ICUs in France and Belgium (2010-2012).

The 2016 EANM Congress took place in Barcelona, Spain, from 15 to 19 October under the leadership of Prof. Wim Oyen, chair of the EANM Scientific Committee. With more than 6,000 participants, this congress was the most important European event in nuclear medicine, bringing together a multidisciplinary community involved in the different fields of nuclear medicine.

Characteristics of and risk factors for severe neurological deficit in patients with pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis: A case-control study.

Severe neurological deficit (SND) is a rare but major complication of pyogenic vertebral osteomyelitis (PVO). We aimed to determine the risk factors and the variables associated with clinical improvement for SND during PVO.This case-control study included patients without PVO-associated SND enrolled in a prospective randomized antibiotic duration study, and patients with PVO-associated SND managed in 8 French referral centers.

Is 5 days of oral fluoroquinolone enough for acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis? The DTP randomized trial.

The treatment duration of acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis (AUP) is still under debate. As shortening treatment duration could be a means to reduce antimicrobial resistance, we aimed to establish whether 5 days of antibiotic treatment is non-inferior to 10 days in patients with AUP. We performed an open-label prospective randomized trial comparing 5 days to 10 days of fluoroquinolone treatment for AUP.

Effect of a condolence letter on grief symptoms among relatives of patients who died in the ICU: a randomized clinical trial.

Purpose: Family members of patients who die in the intensive care unit (ICU) may experience symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and/or prolonged grief. We evaluated whether grief symptoms were alleviated if the physician and the nurse in charge at the time of death sent the closest relative a handwritten condolence letter.

Methods: Multicenter randomized trial conducted among 242 relatives of patients who died at 22 ICUs in France between December 2014 and October 2015.

First-line therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia in patients older than 79 years is feasible and achieves good results: A FILO retrospective study.

The mean age at diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is 72 years, with 22.8% of patients being older than 80 years. However, the elderly are underrepresented in clinical studies of CLL.

A randomized and double-blind controlled trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of rituximab for warm auto-immune hemolytic anemia in adults (the RAIHA study).

This Phase 3 multicentre randomized double-blind and placebo-controlled trial aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of rituximab (RTX) to placebo for treating newly diagnosed warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA) in adults receiving prednisone. Adults with a confirmed diagnosis of wAIHA who previously received corticosteroids for less than 6 weeks could be included. At inclusion, all patients received prednisone at a daily dose of 1 mg/kg for 2 weeks, and then tapered according to a pre-defined recommended reduction scheme.

To Drain or Not to Drain Infraperitoneal Anastomosis After Rectal Excision for Cancer: The GRECCAR 5 Randomized Trial.

Objective: To assess the effect of pelvic drainage after rectal surgery for cancer.

Background: Pelvic sepsis is one of the major complications after rectal excision for rectal cancer. Although many studies have confirmed infectiveness of drainage after colectomy, there is still a controversy after rectal surgery.

Characterization and Management of Hedgehog Pathway Inhibitor-Related Adverse Events in Patients With Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma.

Unlabelled: Abnormal activation of hedgehog pathway signaling is a key driver in the pathogenesis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Vismodegib, a first-in-class small-molecule inhibitor of hedgehog pathway signaling, is approved by regulatory authorities for the treatment of adults who have metastatic BCC or locally advanced BCC that has recurred after surgery, or who are not candidates for surgery and who are not candidates for radiation. A second inhibitor, sonidegib, was also recently approved for the same patient group with locally advanced BCC.
