Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, Warsaw, Poland; Center for Reproductive Health, Institute of Mother and Child, Warsaw, Poland.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic and has spread around the globe, unsparingly affecting vulnerable populations. Effective prevention measures for pregnant women, who are particularly affected, include early identification of those patients at risk of developing in-hospital complications, and the continuous improvement of maternal-fetal treatment strategies to ensure the efficient use of health resources. The objective of our retrospective study was to determine which patient biomarkers on hospital admission correlate with disease severity as measured by disease course classification, the need for oxygen supplementation and higher demand for oxygen, the need for mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit admission, and length of hospital stay.

Clinical Department of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Subunit, Central Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Interior and Administration, Warsaw, Poland.

Diet plays an important role in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. It has an impact on microbiome, host barrier, and immune response. Clinical studies indicate that various dietary interventions such as exclusive enteral nutrition and exclusion diets might be useful for induction of remission in mild to moderate Crohn's disease, but also for patients failing biological therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • - A new standardized scoring system called the Toronto Upper Gastrointestinal Cleaning Score (TUGCS) was developed to improve the assessment of mucosal visualization during esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) using a consensus methodology involving expert feedback.
  • - After three rounds of review with 14 experts, the TUGCS showed high inter-rater reliability (0.79) and strong test-retest reliability (0.83), indicating consistent results among different assessors over time.
  • - The TUGCS demonstrated strong validity, correlating positively with an independent assessment of mucosal visualization, suggesting it could be widely adopted in clinical practice for better EGD quality assessment.

Service de Cardiologie, Insuffisance Cardiaque et Valvulopathie, Hôpital de la Timone, Marseille, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the clinical course and outcomes of patients with recurrent versus first-episode infective endocarditis (IE), using data from the EURO-ENDO registry.
  • A total of 3106 patients were analyzed, revealing that while patients with recurrent IE had a different profile and valve involvement, there were no significant differences in mortality rates between the two groups.
  • Both types of IE shared similar predictors for poor outcomes, suggesting that treatment approaches may need to be similarly aggressive regardless of the patient's history with the disease.

Prognostic Role of Residual Thrombus Burden Following Thrombectomy: Insights From the TOTAL Trial.

Circ Cardiovasc Interv

May 2022

Division of Cardiology, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital, University Health Network, Canada (M.A., M.K., C.K., V.D.).

Background: It is unclear whether more effective forms of thrombus removal than current aspiration catheters would lead to improved outcomes. We sought to evaluate the prognostic role of residual thrombus burden (rTB), after manual thrombectomy, in patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention with routine manual thrombectomy in the TOTAL trial (Thrombectomy Versus PCI Alone).

Methods: This is a single-arm analysis of patients from the TOTAL trial who underwent routine manual aspiration thrombectomy.

Department of Pathology, Medical University of Warsaw, Chałubińskiego 5, 02-004, Warsaw, Poland. Electronic address:

Macrophages are vital inhabitants of the developing heart. Nonetheless, their key role is not limited to prenatal processes, as embryo-derived macrophages govern the pool of cardiac macrophages also postnatally. Namely, embryonic cardiac macrophages are of yolk sac-, embryonic monocyte-, and heart-tissue origin.

Objective: Myocardial damage occurs in up to 25% of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases. While veno-venous extracorporeal life support (V-V ECLS) is used as respiratory support, mechanical circulatory support (MCS) may be required for severe cardiac dysfunction. This systematic review summarizes the available literature regarding MCS use rates, disease drivers for MCS initiation, and MCS outcomes in COVID-19 patients.

Arterial and venous thrombosis of pancreatic allografts is a rare complication in the late post-transplantation period. In addition to traditional thrombosis risk factors, SARS-CoV-2 infection predisposes patients to thrombotic diseases in both arterial and venous vessels. Transplant patients with a history of COVID-19 should be carefully monitored for arterial embolism and graft vein thrombosis.

  • A study in Poland examined the clinical characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients who needed extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), revealing a high ICU mortality rate of 74.1%.
  • The research included 158 patients between March 2020 and May 2021, focusing on factors that might predict in-hospital death, such as pre-ECMO lactate levels and body mass index (BMI).
  • The findings indicated that higher lactate levels and BMI were linked to increased risk of death, and among survivors, many were successfully weaned from ECMO or received lung transplants.
