Background: The CONtrolled delivery For ImproveD outcomEs with cliNiCal Evidence registry was initiated to characterize the clinical safety and device performance from experienced transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) centers in Europe and Australia that use the Portico valve to treat patients with severe aortic stenosis. We herein report for the first time the valve performance at 30-day across all implanted valve sizes and the 1-year survival from this registry.

Methods: This was a prospective, multicenter, single-arm observational clinical investigation of patients clinically indicated for implantation of a Portico valve in experienced TAVI centers.

Chronic non healing wounds in diabetic patients still impose a major problem in modern medicine. Especially additional peripheral vascular disease complicates treatment success in these patients. Thus, we analyzed the effects of 11,12 epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EET) in a combined model of hyperglycemia and ischemia in mice.

Bile acid sequestrants in poor healing after endoscopic therapy of Barrett's esophagus.

Background/aims: Endoscopic therapy for neoplastic Barrett's esophagus (BE) has become the standard of care over the past two decades. In clinical practice, we regularly encounter patients who fail to achieve complete squamous epithelialization of the esophagus. Although the therapeutic strategies in the individual stages of BE, dysplasia, and esophageal adenocarcinoma are well studied and largely standardized, the problem of inadequate healing after endoscopic therapy is only marginally considered.

Because of their low incidence, studies about carpal fractures are rare. The aim of the present study was to analyze epidemiology and treatment of fractured carpal bones. We retrospectively analyzed data of 178 patients admitted to our emergency room with carpal fractures over 6 years.

Research in orthopaedic trauma surgery: approaches of basic scientists and clinicians and the relevance of interprofessional research teams.

Background: An increasing clinical workload and growing financial, administrative and legal burdens as well as changing demands regarding work-life balance have resulted in an increased emphasis on clinical practice at the expense of research activities by orthopaedic trauma surgeons. This has led to an overall decrease in the number of scientifically active clinicians in orthopaedic trauma surgery, which represents a serious burden on research in this field. In order to guarantee that the clinical relevance of this discipline is also mirrored in the scientific field, new concepts are needed to keep clinicians involved in research.

The acute phase management of spinal cord injury affecting polytrauma patients: the ASAP study.

Background: Few data on the management of acute phase of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) in patients suffering polytrauma are available. As the therapeutic choices in the first hours may have a deep impact on outcome of tSCI patients, we conducted an international survey investigating this topic.

Despite the implementation of consolidative immune checkpoint inhibition after definitive chemoradiotherapy (CRT), the prognosis for locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains poor. We assessed the impact of the C-reactive protein (CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR) as an inflammation-based prognostic score in patients with locally advanced NSCLC treated with CRT. We retrospectively identified and analyzed 52 patients with primary unresectable NSCLC (UICC Stage III) treated with definitive/neoadjuvant CRT between 2014 and 2019.

Injury Patterns after Falling down Stairs-High Ratio of Traumatic Brain Injury under Alcohol Influence.

Falling down a staircase is a common mechanism of injury in patients with severe trauma, but the effect of varying fall height according to the number of steps on injury patterns in these patients has been little studied. In this retrospective study, prospectively collected data from a Level 1 Trauma Center in Germany were analyzed regarding the injury patterns of patients admitted through the trauma room with suspicion of multiple injuries following a fall down a flight of stairs between January 2016 and December 2019. In total 118 patients were examined which where consecutively included in this study.

The C5a/C5a receptor 1 axis controls tissue neovascularization through CXCL4 release from platelets.

Platelets contribute to the regulation of tissue neovascularization, although the specific factors underlying this function are unknown. Here, we identified the complement anaphylatoxin C5a-mediated activation of C5a receptor 1 (C5aR1) on platelets as a negative regulatory mechanism of vessel formation. We showed that platelets expressing C5aR1 exert an inhibitory effect on endothelial cell functions such as migration and 2D and 3D tube formation.

Local application reduces number of needed EPC for beneficial effects on wound healing compared to systemic treatment in mice.

Introduction: Stem cell transplantation is one of the most promising strategies to improve healing in chronic wounds as systemic administration of endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) enhances healing by promoting neovascularization and homing though a high amount of cells is needed. In the following study, we analysed whether local application can reduce the number of EPC needed achieving the same beneficial effect on wound healing.

Material And Methods: Wound healing after local or systemic treatment with EPC was monitored in vivo by creating standardized wounds on the dorsum of hairless mice measuring wound closure every second day.

Effect of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on haematological parameters in grades B and C periodontitis: an exploratory analysis.

Aim: Assessment of the effect of nonsurgical periodontal therapy on haematological parameters in patients with grades B (BP) and C periodontitis (CP).

Methods: Eight BP and 46 CP patients received full-mouth periodontal debridement within 48 h, if positive for Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans with adjunctive systemic antibiotics (4 BP, 17 CP). Clinical data were collected prior and 12 weeks after periodontal therapy.

Risk factors for reoperation in primary hand infections: a multivariate analysis.

Introduction: Severe hand infection might cause severe morbidity including stiffness, contracture and possibly amputation. The purpose of this study was to analyse the current epidemiology of adult acute hand infections in a European Hand Surgery Centre and to identify risk factors for secondary surgery.

Long-term outcome of fingertip reconstruction with the homodigital neurovascular island flap.

Introduction: Fingertip injuries are frequent and several surgical strategies exist to reconstruct the amputated part and restore function and appearance. Yet, long-term results are rarely published.
