Abdominoplasty is a commonly performed procedure for patients after significant weight loss and in postpregnancy women. Stable weight and completed family planning are critical for optimal outcomes, as pregnancy postabdominoplasty can increase risks for both mother and fetus and potentially compromise aesthetic results. We present the first reported case of a patient undergoing abdominoplasty while unknowingly pregnant.

The incidence of reduction mammoplasty has been steadily increasing over recent decades. Surgical site infections (SSIs) represent a common yet preventable complication across surgical disciplines. Studies across various surgical specialties have indicated a seasonal influence on SSIs, primarily correlated with higher temperatures and humidity.

Rationale & Objectives: Hyperglycemia is frequently observed early after transplantation and associated with development of post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM). Here, we assessed continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) targeting afternoon hyperglycemia.
Study Design: Open-label randomized parallel 3-arm design.

Adverse drug reactions frequently involve the gastrointestinal tract. We present two cases of colitis that occurred months to years after chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation for the treatment of lymphoma. Laboratory tests revealed altered immune status with decreased CD4/CD8 ratio and hypogammaglobinemia (in one patient).

Background: With the increasing demand for autologous breast reconstruction, different surgical techniques have emerged to provide patients with the best possible result tailored to their individual needs. The upper thigh provides an alternative tissue resource in patients where abdominal based flaps are not feasible. Although surgical outcomes and donor-site morbidity demonstrate favorable results using abdominal and thigh-based free flaps for autologous breast reconstruction, the differences in skin constitution and color between the two flap donor sites have not been investigated.

Migraine affects more than 1 billion people globally, with distinct genetic variations influencing susceptibility. Thereby, genetic variations play a key role in the probability of developing migraine. However, personalized genetic analysis-based treatment options in migraine treatments are limited.

We report the case of a 66-year-old man with a known history of IgD multiple myeloma (MM) which was admitted to hospital because of acute renal failure. Routine PCR testing on admission yielded a positive result for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Examination of the peripheral blood (PB) smear revealed 17% lymphoplasmacytoid cells and a few small plasma cells mimicking morphological changes frequently seen in viral diseases.

Background: Hormone therapy with selective estrogen modulators (tamoxifen) and aromatase inhibitors is commonly used in the treatment of breast cancer. While the increased risk for thromboembolic events has been known since their early application, the potential risk in microsurgical breast reconstruction is still debated. This study aimed to evaluate the risk for microvascular flap complications in patients with perioperative hormone therapy.

Background: The transverse myocutaneous gracilis (TMG) flap is a popular choice for autologous breast reconstruction due to its consistent anatomy and reliability, especially for slim patients. While the incidence of donor-site morbidity is comparable with other free flaps, there is no literature about the management of donor-site complications available. Our study aims to provide an overview of encountered complications, associated risk factors and their management using a standardized algorithmic approach.

Unlabelled: Extraintestinal strongyloidiasis is rare in patients without immunosuppression. We describe the first case of chylous ascites as a result of strongyloidiasis. Alcohol cessation, diuretic therapy and repeated paracentesis did not lead to improvement of refractory chylous ascites with positive nucleic acid amplification test indicative of infection.

Upper blepharoplasty is one of the most frequently performed aesthetic surgeries worldwide. While it is considered a low risk procedure, patients have high expectations regarding the outcome of elective surgery of the face and the majority of residents usually have little exposure to cosmetic surgeries in the early years of their training. All eligible patients who had undergone bilateral upper blepharoplasty at the senior author's institution between January 2016 and August 2019 were invited to participate in an online questionnaire.

Since the broad implementation of ibrutinib therapy, an increasing number of studies have been reported on invasive fungal infections (IFI) associated with ibrutinib administration. We conducted a retrospective cohort study in three hospitals in south-east Austria in order to assess the local epidemiology of ibrutinib associated IFIs. A total of 113 patients with underlying hematological malignancy were included in the study.

Survival in cancer is continuously improving due to evolving oncological treatment. Therefore, cardiovascular short-term and long-term side effects gain crucial importance for overall outcome. Cardiotoxicity not only presents as heart failure, but also as treatment-resistant hypertension, acute coronary ischemia with plaque rupture or vasospasm, thromboembolism, arrhythmia, pulmonary hypertension, diastolic dysfunction, acute myocarditis and others.

Electrical impedance segmentography offers a new radiation-free possibility of continuous bedside ventilation monitoring. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and reproducibility of this bedside tool by comparing synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) with neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA) in critically-ill children. In this prospective randomized case-control crossover trial in a pediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary center, including eight mechanically-ventilated children, four sequences of two different ventilation modes were consecutively applied.

Background: Health care professionals have to judge the appropriateness of treatment in critical care on a daily basis. There is general consensus that critical care interventions should not be performed when they are inappropriate. It is not yet clear which chances of survival are considered necessary or which risk for serious disabilities is acceptable in quantitative terms for different stakeholders to start intensive care treatment.

Introduction: The transverse myocutaneous gracilis (TMG) flap has become a popular and reliable alternative for autologous breast reconstruction. Initially described as a valuable tissue source for women with low body-mass index, indications nowadays have widely expanded. The Western civilization demographic development with its aging population and the steady growing average BMI has led to increasing breast reconstructions with TMG flaps in overweight and aged individuals.

Objectives: Data on the clinical importance of the detection of anti-dsDNA antibodies in patients with negative indirect immunofluorescence on the HEp-2 cell (IIF) are sparse and are especially not available for all common commercially available assays. This study aimed to assess the clinical significance of anti-dsDNA antibodies determined by the Elia™ dsDNA assay in patients with negative IIF.
Methods: We retrospectively examined the medical records of 234 consecutive subjects with detectable anti-dsDNA antibodies determined by the Elia™ dsDNA assay.

Introduction: Hypothermia has notable effects on platelets, platelet function, fibrinogen, and coagulation factors. Common laboratory techniques cannot identify those effects, because blood samples are usually warmed to 37°C before analysis and do not fully reflect the situation. Multiple aspects of the pathophysiological changes in humoral and cellular coagulation remain obscure.
