Atrophic Gastritis and Autoimmunity: Results from a Prospective, Multicenter Study.

Diagnostics (Basel)

April 2023

Institut des Maladies de l'Appareil Digestif (IMAD), Hepato-Gastroenterology & Digestive Oncology, University Hospital of Nantes, Hôtel Dieu, Place Alexis Ricordeau, CEDEX 1, 44093 Nantes, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent increases in gastric cancer incidence, especially among young women, are puzzling, with autoimmunity possibly playing a role in this new type of cancer.
  • In a study with 355 patients, researchers examined the prevalence of 19 autoantibodies in those with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and found that anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) were more common in autoimmune gastritis (AIG) patients compared to others.
  • While ANA positivity was linked to being female, overall findings indicated that common autoantibodies were not significantly more prevalent in CAG patients, suggesting that routine autoantibody testing may hold limited clinical relevance in these cases.

Perfusion gradients promote delayed perihaematomal oedema in intracerebral haemorrhage.

Brain Commun

April 2023

Department of Neurological Sciences and Vision, Neurology Unit, ASST Spedali Civili, Brescia 25123, Italy.

Perihaematomal oedema is a potential therapeutic target to improve outcome of patients with intracerebral haemorrhage, but its pathophysiology remains poorly elucidated. We investigated the longitudinal changes of cerebral perfusion and their influence on perihaematomal oedema development in 150 patients with intracerebral haemorrhage who underwent computed tomography perfusion within 6 h from onset, at 24 h and at 7 days. Perfusion parameters were measured in haemorrhagic core, perihaematomal rim, surrounding normal appearing and contralateral brain tissue.

Background: Lung point-of-care ultrasonography (L-POCUS) is highly effective in detecting pulmonary peripheral patterns and may allow early identification of patients who are likely to develop an acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We hypothesized that L-POCUS performed within the first 48 hours of non-critical patients with suspected COVID-19 would identify those with a high-risk of worsening.

Methods: POCUSCO was a prospective, multicenter study.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of secukinumab and adalimumab in treating enthesitis in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) over 52 weeks, focusing on resolution time and multiple assessment tools.
  • - Out of 851 patients, a significant portion presented with enthesitis at the start, showing worse disease activity; both medications led to similar rates of enthesitis resolution by week 24 and 52.
  • - The results indicated that both drugs performed comparably in treating enthesitis and improving patients' quality of life, suggesting that secukinumab's action on IL-17 is as effective as adalimumab’s TNF-α inhibition.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnosing pulmonary embolism (PE) is hard in 2023 because its signs and symptoms are confusing and not clear.
  • Many tests, like a special scan called CTPA, are done more often now, but this hasn't really helped patients feel better.
  • Some new ideas are being discussed to reduce unnecessary testing, like changing the rules for which patients need certain tests, to prevent complications and risks from the extra scans.

Although the identification of numerous genes involved in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) has reshaped our understanding of their etiology, there are still major obstacles in the way of developing therapeutic solutions for intellectual disability (ID) and other NDDs. These include extensive clinical and genetic heterogeneity, rarity of recurrent pathogenic variants, and comorbidity with other psychiatric traits. Moreover, a large intragenic mutational landscape is at play in some NDDs, leading to a broad range of clinical symptoms.
