Some eating patterns, such as restrained eating and uncontrolled eating, are risk factors for eating disorders. However, it is not yet clear whether they are associated with neurocognitive differences. In the current study, we analyzed whether eating patterns can be used to classify participants into meaningful clusters, and we examined whether there are neurocognitive differences between the clusters.

Purpose: As elective axillary dissection is loosing ground for early breast cancer (BC) patients both in terms of prognostic and therapeutic power, there is a growing interest in predicting patients with (nodal) high tumour burden (HTB), especially after a positive sentinel node biopsy (SNB) because they would really benefit from further axillary intervention either by complete lymph-node dissection or axillary radiation therapy.

Methods/patients: Based on an analysis of 1254 BC patients in whom complete axillary clearance was performed, we devised a logistic regression (LR) model to predict those with HTB, as defined by the presence of three or more involved nodes with macrometastasis. This was accomplished through prior selection of every variable associated with HTB at univariate analysis.

Purpose: Roughly two-thirds of early breast cancer cases are associated with negative axillary nodes and do not benefit from axillary surgery at all. Accordingly, there is an ongoing search for non-surgical staging procedures to avoid lymph-node dissection or sentinel node biopsy (SNB). Non-invasive imaging techniques with very high sensitivity (Se) and negative predictive value (NPV) could eventually replace SNB.

Objective: The last few years have witnessed a significant increase in the preoperative use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for staging purposes in breast cancer (BC) patients. Many studies have confirmed the improvement that MRI can provide in terms of diagnostic assessment, especially with regard to additional disease foci. In the present study, we address the advantages and disadvantages of MRI in the preoperative setting for BC patients.

Introduction: Until recently, completion ALND has been considered the standard of care after a positive SN in breast cancer patients. However, most patients will not display further axillary involvement. The Tenon score is a simple nomogram that can be used intraoperatively to avoid completion ALND in low-risk patients.

Chagas disease and transfusion medicine: a perspective from non-endemic countries.

Blood Transfus

October 2015

SIMTI (Italian Society for Transfusion Medicine) Past President, Verona, Italy.

In the last decades, increasing international migration and travel from Latin America to Europe have favoured the emergence of tropical diseases outside their "historical" boundaries. Chagas disease, a zoonosis endemic in rural areas of Central and South America represents a clear example of this phenomenon. In the absence of the vector, one of the potential modes of transmission of Chagas disease in non-endemic regions is through blood and blood products.

Purpose: This study aimed to test a newly devised cost-effective multiplex PCR assay for the molecular diagnosis of autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP), as well as the use of whole-exome sequencing (WES) to detect disease-causing mutations in adRP.

Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood lymphocytes of index patients with adRP and their affected and unaffected family members. We used a newly devised multiplex PCR assay capable of amplifying the genetic loci of RHO, PRPH2, RP1, PRPF3, PRPF8, PRPF31, IMPDH1, NRL, CRX, KLHL7, and NR2E3 to molecularly diagnose 18 index patients with adRP.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to create a reliable method for identifying mutations in 12 specific genes linked to autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (adRP), which represent over 95% of known mutations in this condition.
  • Researchers used long-range PCR (LR-PCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) to analyze DNA from patients, successfully covering all gene regions of interest with high sequencing depth.
  • They detected both known mutations and discovered two new mutations, concluding that their method is effective for analyzing genetic mutations in adRP and could also be applied to other similar genetic diseases.

Updated classification system for proximal humeral fractures.

Clin Med Res

June 2009

Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology Department (Shoulder Unit), Hospital of Terrassa, and Clinica Sagrada Familia of Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain.

Proximal humeral fractures can restrict daily activities and, therefore, deserve efficient diagnoses that minimize complications and sequels. For good diagnosis and treatment, patient characteristics, variability in the forms of the fractures presented, and the technical difficulties in achieving fair results with surgical treatment should all be taken into account. Current classification systems for these fractures are based on anatomical and pathological principles, and not on systematic image reading.
