Aims: We examined if a congenital long QT syndrome (cLQTS) diagnosis and severity of cLQTS disease manifestation was associated with increased risk of depression, anxiety, and all-cause mortality.

Methods And Results: All patients with known cLQTS in Denmark were identified using nationwide registries and specialized inherited cardiac disease clinics (1994-2016) and followed for up to 3 years after their cLQTS diagnosis. Risk factors for depression, anxiety, and all-cause mortality were determined using multivariable Cox proportional-hazards regression.

Background: People with inflammatory arthritis (IA) often experience low work ability, and up to 38% lose their jobs during the initial years after the diagnosis of IA.

Aim: We explore the perceived challenges at work and identify the need for professional support among Danish people with IA.

Materials/methods: Individual explorative interviews based on a hermeneutic approach.

This study aims to investigate prevalence of Mycoplasma genitalium and macrolide resistance-associated mutations and coinfection with other sexually transmitted bacteria in Southern Jutland, Denmark, where this information is very limited. Urinary samples from patients suspected of sexually transmitted bacterial infections collected at primary healthcare facilities in Southern Jutland are routinely tested for Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. 601 of these samples were analysed with SpeeDx MG+23S reagents, which can detect M.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of cannabis-based medicine (CBM) on spasticity and central neuropathic pain in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury (SCI), who often seek such treatment for their symptoms.
  • Patients are randomly assigned to receive either THC, CBD, a combination of both, or a placebo, with major outcomes focused on pain and spasticity levels reported by the patients.
  • The research aims to shed light on the benefits and side effects of different cannabinoids and their dosage, while also gathering data on pharmacodynamics (PD) and pharmacokinetics (PK) for better understanding in a clinical setting.

Retinoids are not linked to risk of multiple sclerosis: A Danish nationwide cohort study.

Eur J Neurol

January 2022

Clinical Pharmacology, Pharmacy and Environmental Medicine, Department of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Background And Purpose: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system with an undetermined etiology. Retinoids may have immunomodulatory effects that favorably influence MS progression. We aimed to explore the yet unknown relationship between exposure to retinoids and the risk of acquiring MS.

Although somatic mutations influence the pathogenesis, phenotype, and outcome of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs), little is known about their impact on molecular response to cytoreductive treatment. We performed targeted next-generation sequencing (NGS) on 202 pretreatment samples obtained from patients with MPN enrolled in the DALIAH trial (A Study of Low Dose Interferon Alpha Versus Hydroxyurea in Treatment of Chronic Myeloid Neoplasms; #NCT01387763), a randomized controlled phase 3 clinical trial, and 135 samples obtained after 24 months of therapy with recombinant interferon-alpha (IFNα) or hydroxyurea. The primary aim was to evaluate the association between complete clinicohematologic response (CHR) at 24 months and molecular response through sequential assessment of 120 genes using NGS.

Introduction: The risk for cardiovascular diseases and other comorbidities increases with the number of unhealthy lifestyle factors in the general population. However, information on the combined number of unhealthy lifestyle factors in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is scarce.

Objectives: To study lifestyle factors and the association between disease impact and two or more unhealthy lifestyle factors in two Scandinavian cohorts with RA.

Background: In patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), home dialysis offers socio-economic and health benefits compared with in-centre dialysis but is generally underutilized. We hypothesized that the pre-dialysis course and institutional factors affect the choice of dialysis modality after dialysis initiation (DI).

Methods: The Peridialysis study is a multinational, multicentre prospective observational study assessing the causes and timing of DI and consequences of suboptimal DI.

Evaluation of a new fast in-house Real-Time PCR assay for detecting both Norovirus and toxigenic Clostridium difficile using fecal sample and rectal swab.

Am J Infect Control

January 2022

Focused Research Unit in Emergency Medicine, Hospital of Southern Denmark, Aabenraa, Denmark; Institute for Regional Health Research, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, Denmark.

Background: Norovirus and toxigenic Clostridium difficile infections are the 2 most common causes of infectious gastroenteritis. Rapid and reliable detection of these to microorganisms is important to assess if contact precautions are indicated to prevent spreading and reduce cost of isolation.

Methods: This study determines sensitivity and specificity of a new fast in-house PCR assay used on BD MAX platform to detect both norovirus and C difficile in 1 turn-over in clinical context.

Importance: Treatment strategies for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) vary markedly between Denmark and Sweden. The difference in the association of these national strategies with clinical outcomes is unknown.

Objective: To investigate the association of national differences in disease-modifying treatment (DMT) strategies for RRMS with disability outcomes.

Patient educational programs (PEP) are recommended as part of the treatment for medication-overuse headache (MOH), however, knowledge of patients' experiences when participating is sparse. This study explored how patients experienced participating in a PEP focusing on empowering coping strategies and motivation for behavioral changes. Eight individual semistructured interviews were conducted among patients suffering from MOH who had attended a PEP intervention in a randomized controlled trial.

Objective: Focal cartilage injuries are debilitating and difficult to treat. Biological cartilage repair procedures are used for patients younger than 40 years, and knee arthroplasties are generally reserved for patients older than 60 years. Resurfacing implants are well suited for patients in this treatment gap.

A preference-sensitive instrument for women with pelvic organ prolapse was developed to increase shared decision-making. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial to measure the effectiveness of the instrument. A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted at three Danish gynecological clinics to assess feasibility through recruitment rates, per-protocol use and women's perception of (1) support for decision-making, (2) shared decision-making (Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire), and (3) satisfaction with their decisions.

Background: Robot-assisted surgery is increasingly implemented for the resection of colorectal cancer, although the scientific evidence for adopting this technique is still limited. This study's main objective was to compare short-term complication rates, oncological outcomes, and the inflammatory stress response after colorectal resection for cancer performed laparoscopic or robot-assisted.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing the robot-assisted approach to laparoscopic surgery for elective malignant colorectal neoplasm.

We describe a genetic syndrome due to PGM2L1 deficiency. PGM2 and PGM2L1 make hexose-bisphosphates, like glucose-1,6-bisphosphate, which are indispensable cofactors for sugar phosphomutases. These enzymes form the hexose-1-phosphates crucial for NDP-sugars synthesis and ensuing glycosylation reactions.

Background: Systematic reviews (SRs) are considered one of the most reliable types of studies in evidence-based medicine. SRs rely on a comprehensive and systematic data gathering, including the search of academic literature databases. This study aimed to investigate which combination of databases would result in the highest overall recall rate of references when conducting SRs of qualitative research regarding diabetes mellitus.

Telomeres are involved in processes like cellular growth, chromosomal stability, and proper segregation to daughter cells. Telomere length measured in leukocytes (LTL) has been investigated in different cancer types, including multiple myeloma (MM). However, LTL measurement is prone to heterogeneity due to sample handling and study design (retrospective vs.
