Background: Easy firearm access increases injury risk among adolescents. We evaluated the acceptability and feasibility of improving knowledge of a 3 min safe firearm storage education video in the paediatric emergency department.
Methods: We conducted a single-centre block trial in a large paediatric emergency department (August 2020-2022).

Rationale: Animal models suggest pre-eclampsia (Pre-E) affects alveolar development, but data from humans are lacking.
Objective: Assess the impact of Pre-E on airway function, diffusion capacity, and respiratory morbidity in preterm and term infants born from mothers with Pre-E.
Methods: Infants born from mothers with and without Pre-E were recruited for this study; term and preterm infants were included in both cohorts.

There is an increasing interest in alpha-range rhythms in the electroencephalogram (EEG) in relation to perceptual and attentional processes. The infant mu rhythm has been extensively studied in the context of linkages between action observation and action production in infancy, but less is known about the mu rhythm in relation to cross-modal processes involving somatosensation. We investigated differences in mu responses to cued vibrotactile stimulation of the hand in two age groups of infants: From 6 to 7 months and 13 to 14 months.

SCN8A-related epilepsies are often severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Seizures can be treatment resistant, and patients suffer from severe intellectual disability. Reports have suggested that SCN8A-related epilepsies have a high mortality with SUDEP as the major underlying cause.

Obese adolescents have increased fracture risk, but effects of alterations in adiposity on bone accrual and strength in obese adolescents are not understood. We evaluated 12-month changes in trabecular and cortical volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and cortical geometry in obese adolescents undergoing a randomized weight management program, and investigated the effect of body composition changes on bone outcomes. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) of the radius and tibia, and whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans were obtained at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months in 91 obese adolescents randomized to standard care versus behavioral intervention for weight loss.

Pediatric hematology-oncology (PHO) fellowship training brings new and significant stressors, making it an attractive setting for innovation in humanism and professionalism training.
Procedure: We electronically surveyed a national sample of PHO fellows to identify fellows' educational needs in humanism and professionalism.

Reelin choreographs neuronal migration to establish laminar structures during brain formation. A recent paper uncovers a new function for Reelin signaling in specifying dendritic compartmentalization. Reelin-induced tyrosine phosphorylation is responsible for enrichment of ion channels in dendritic tufts.

Children with congenital hyperinsulinism are at risk for recurring, severe episodes of hypoglycemia that can cause seizures, brain damage, and developmental delay. To assess the frequency of permanent brain damage in this disorder, we carried out a telephone survey of 68 children who presented to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia between 1980 and 2000. One third of the group had some degree of developmental delay.

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes has dramatically increased in children and adolescents over the past 10 years. Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance and high insulin levels. Reasons cited for the rise of this condition in children and adolescents are speculated to stem from obesity because of a rise in sedentary behavior, nonnutritious food choices, and genetic predisposition.
