Fatty acids (FAs) and gut bacteria likely play vital roles in intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). However, the causal connection between FAs, gut microbiota, and ICP has not yet been confirmed. To investigate the associations of FAs, gut bacteria, and ICP, a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis with two samples was performed to identify the potential causal relationships between FAs and ICP.

Department of Oncology, The Key Laboratory of Biomarker High Throughput Screening and Target Translation of Breast and Gastrointestinal Tumor, Affiliated Zhongshan Hospital of Dalian University, No. 6 Jiefang Street, Dalian, Liaoning, 110006, China. Electronic address:

Gold nanorods (GNRs) mediated photothermal therapy (PTT) represents a promising technique for cancer treatment, utilizing GNRs in conjunction with near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation to convert energy into heat. In the present study, we employed PTT to induce apoptosis in pancreatic cancer cells and investigated its underlying mechanisms through quantitative proteomics analysis. Initially, we established that temperatures ranging from 47 to 51°C significantly enhance cellular apoptosis without inducing necrosis.

As functional derivatives of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) have garnered significant attention and application in regenerative medicine. However, the technical limitations for large-scale isolation of sEVs and their heterogeneous nature have added complexity to their applications. It remains unclear if the heterogeneous sEVs represent different aspects of MSCs functions.

Zika virus (ZIKV) and dengue virus (DENV) are two major mosquito-borne flaviviruses that pose a significant threat to the global public health system, particularly in tropical regions. The clinical outcomes related to these viral pathogens can vary from self-limiting asymptomatic infections to various forms of life-threatening pathological conditions such as haemorrhagic disorders. In addition to the direct effects of the viral pathogens, immune processes play also a significant function in the development of diseases mediated by ZIKV and DENV.

Association of depressive symptom trajectories with chronic kidney disease in middle-aged and older adults.

J Psychosom Res

January 2025

Public Health Research Center and Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Wuxi School of Medicine, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, Jiangsu 214122, China. Electronic address:

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the association between trajectories of depressive symptoms and the subsequent risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) by measuring depressive symptoms repeatedly in older adults with normal renal function.

Methods: A total of 9650 participants, comprising community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed at three time points: Wave 1 (2011-2012), Wave 2 (2013-2014), and Wave 3 (2015-2016).

The novel diagnostic term Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) requires at least one cardiovascular risk factor for diagnosis. While the relationship between gallstones and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has been debated, the association between MASLD and gallstones remains unclear. This cross-sectional study aimed to explore this relationship using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 2017 to 2020.

Ce6-GFFY is a novel photosensitizer for colorectal cancer therapy.

Genes Dis

March 2025

State Key Laboratory of Oncology in South China, Guangdong Provincial Clinical Research Center for Cancer, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangzhou, Guangdong 510060, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Photodynamic therapy, an established cancer treatment, is facing a challenge due to the lack of effective photosensitizers for colorectal cancer.
  • Researchers developed a new photosensitizer called Ce6-GFFY, which self-assembles and demonstrates good tumor targeting in mice.
  • Ce6-GFFY works by generating reactive oxygen species when exposed to a specific laser, enhancing the immune response against tumors and significantly inhibiting both primary and metastatic tumor growth after a single treatment.

Exosomes, a subclass of Extracellular Vesicles (EVs), are pivotal mediators of intercellular communication. Exosomes derived from Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) exhibit anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities similar to that of their parental cells, which makes them a cell-free treatment strategy against Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Engineered MSC Exosomes (MSC-Exos) hold the potential to impart multifunctionality to MSCs and optimize their therapeutic effectiveness.

Diabetic wounds are notoriously difficult to heal due to impaired cell repair mechanisms, reduced angiogenesis, and a heightened risk of infection. Fibroblasts play a vital role in wound healing by producing extracellular matrix (ECM) components and various growth factors, but their function is inhibited in diabetic wounds. Chitooligosaccharides (COS), intermediate products of chitosan degradation, have shown efficacy in promoting tissue repair, yet their role in diabetic wound healing remains underexplored.

Endothelial dysfunction, characterized by a decline in endothelial physiological functions, is a significant aspect of cardiovascular aging, contributing notably to arterial stiffness, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Transient receptor potential channel V4 (TRPV4), a key member of Ca-permeable channels, plays a crucial role in maintaining vascular functions. However, the role and mechanisms of TRPV4 in aging-related endothelial dysfunction remain incompletely understood.

VSMC-specific TRPC1 deletion attenuates angiotensin II-induced hypertension and cardiovascular remodeling.

J Mol Med (Berl)

January 2025

Wuxi School of Medicine, Jiangnan University, Jiangsu Province, 1800 Lihu Rd, Wuxi, 214122, China.

Article Synopsis
  • TRPC1 is a ion channel linked to cardiovascular issues, with increased expression observed in both treated vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and aortas of hypertensive mice.
  • Lack of TRPC1 in VSMCs significantly reduces AngII-induced effects like vasoconstriction, hypertension, and heart changes, indicating its crucial role in these processes.
  • The study identifies the EZH2-TRPC1-MEK/ERK pathway as a significant contributor to hypertension, suggesting that targeting TRPC1 or EZH2 could be effective in treating high blood pressure and related cardiovascular problems.

Curcumin and bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs)-derived exosomes are considered to be useful for the treatment of many human diseases, including sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI). However, the role and underlying molecular mechanism of curcumin-loaded BMSCs-derived exosomes in the progression of SA-AKI remain unclear. Exosomes (BMSCs-EXO or BMSCs-EXO) were isolated from curcumin or DMSO-treated BMSCs, and then co-cultured with LPS-induced HK2 cells.
