Objective And Design: Risk factors for severe measles are poorly investigated in high-income countries. The Italian Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases conducted a retrospective study in children hospitalised for measles from January 2016 to August 2017 to investigate the risk factors for severe outcome defined by the presence of long-lasting sequelae, need of intensive care or death.

Results: Nineteen hospitals enrolled 249 children (median age 14.

The finding of collections of macrophages/histiocytes in lung biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage is relatively common in routine practice. This morphological feature in itself is pathological, but the exact clinical significance and underlying disease should be evaluated together with clinical data, functional respiratory and laboratory tests and imaging studies.Morphological characteristics of macrophages and their distribution along the different pulmonary structures should be examined carefully by pathologists.

The architecture of the neocortex classically consists of six layers, based on cytological criteria and on the layout of intra/interlaminar connections. Yet, the comparison of cortical cytoarchitectonic features across different species proves overwhelmingly difficult, due to the lack of a reliable model to analyze the connection patterns of neuronal ensembles forming the different layers. We first defined a set of suitable morphometric cell features, obtained in digitized Nissl-stained sections of the motor cortex of the horse, chimpanzee, and crab-eating macaque.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research involved an observational survey of 17 patients who experienced bladder issues unresponsive to standard treatments, with a follow-up period averaging over 4 years.
  • * Results showed that 75% of patients noted significant improvement in bladder symptoms and quality of life; however, it was suggested that SNM is less effective for mixed symptoms or in patients with advanced disability.

Dizziness and vertigo without neurological signs are typically due to a peripheral vestibular disease. Although the most common causes are benign, differential diagnosis must include potentially life-threatening central diseases such as cerebrovascular pathologies. A systemic clinical approach needs a careful work-up, bedside examination and appropriate instrumental investigation.

Argon plasma coagulation versus cold dissection in pediatric tonsillectomy.

Am J Otolaryngol

March 2012

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Hospital of Dolo, Venice, Italy.

Purpose: Argon plasma coagulation (APC) is a new surgical procedure based on a conductive plasma of ionized argon between an activating electrode and a tissue surface. It is a good alternative for tonsillectomy because of its effective hemostasis and limited penetration depth of the coagulation beam. The aim of this prospective, randomized trial was to evaluate the operative time, intraoperative bleeding, and postoperative morbidity of the "hot" APC tonsillectomy compared with a traditional "cold" dissection tonsillectomy in children.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to demonstrate the oncologic safety of diode laser surgery in the treatment of early glottic carcinoma.

Materials And Methods: The study included 45 patients affected by Tis and T1 glottic squamous cell carcinomas and treated endoscopically by diode laser (60 W, 810 nm). The endoscopic resections were graded according to the European Laryngological Society Classification including 5 types of cordectomy.

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AF) is an unusual cutaneous fibrohistiocytic tumour that is most commonly found in ENT sun-exposed areas of elderly males. Cardiac transplant patients have an increased incidence of multiple cutaneous neoplasms, but the AF is uncommon. Although this neoplasm is benign, it may mimic spindle cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma and soft tissue sarcoma on histologic examination.

Chronic nasal obstruction is a common disorder, mostly caused by hypertrophic inferior turbinates. In cases of nonresponse to conservative medical management, the surgical reduction of the inferior turbinates is often required. Surgical techniques for the reduction of hyperplastic nasal turbinates include monopolar or bipolar coagulation, partial or total reduction of the turbinates with a conchotome or scissors and laser surgery with Nd:YAG, CO(2) or KTP.

The advantages of autologous transfusion are nowadays well known. It appears so very important to enlarge to the greatest number of kinds of pathologies, trying to overcome all possible problems and studying every counterindication. In this study, through a strict collaboration among orthopaedics, anaesthesia, transfusion medicine, neurological and pediatric specialists, we studied a peculiar protocol, suitable for enlarging the autologous techniques to brain damaged children and, after a regular application lasted globally for about two years, we did an evaluation of the results.

The effect of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) on ethanol withdrawal syndrome in alcoholics was investigated in a randomised double-blind study. Patients with withdrawal symptoms were treated either with GHB (orally in a syrup preparation) (11 patients) or with the syrup alone (12). GHB treatment (50 mg/kg) led to a prompt reduction in withdrawal symptoms, such as tremors, sweating, nausea, depression, anxiety, and restlessness.
