Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of external ventricular drainage (EVD) on rebleeding rates and the occurrence of hematomas in patients with ruptured aneurysms who also experience acute hydrocephalus.
  • It analyzes clinical data from 83 patients out of 606 who needed EVD placement, focusing on the timing of EVD relative to aneurysm treatment and the use of dual antiplatelet therapy.
  • Findings suggest that pre-treatment EVD placement may reduce rebleeding rates, but dual antiplatelet therapy significantly increases the risk of EVD-related hematomas, particularly when EVD is placed after starting the therapy.

  • Polymyxins, such as colistin and polymyxin B, are crucial for treating Gram-negative bacterial infections, but their use is limited due to concerns about neurotoxicity.
  • The study aimed to compare the neurotoxic effects of colistin and polymyxin B by conducting both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo (rat model) experiments, focusing on cell viability, apoptosis, oxidative stress, and brain injury.
  • Findings revealed that colistin caused less neurotoxicity than polymyxin B, showing better cell viability and lower levels of oxidative stress, which may support more rational clinical use of these antibiotics.

Cancer Metab

October 2024

Department of Spinal Surgery, The Fourth Hospital of Changsha, Changsha Hospital of Hunan Normal University, No.70 Lushan Road, Yuelu District, Changsha, 410006, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Chondrosarcoma (CHS) is a type of cancer that resists traditional treatments, prompting this research to explore the roles of RNF2 and CBX7 in its development to find new targeted therapies.
  • RNF2 was found to be highly active in CHS cells, and reducing its expression led to decreased cell growth and increased cell death, while affecting CBX7 levels and activity.
  • The study concludes that RNF2 promotes CHS growth by increasing the degradation of CBX7, suggesting that targeting this pathway could be a potential strategy for treating advanced CHS.

Therapeutic drug monitoring and safety of voriconazole in patients with liver dysfunction.

Antimicrob Agents Chemother

November 2024

Department of Pharmacy, The Affiliated Changsha Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates how voriconazole (VRC) levels are distributed in patients with liver dysfunction, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring of drug levels in this population.
  • It analyzes medical records of 102 hospitalized patients and identifies factors like age, liver disease severity (Child-Pugh score), CRP levels, and bilirubin that affect VRC concentrations.
  • The findings suggest a high rate of VRC-related side effects and propose that dosage adjustments, including therapeutic drug monitoring, are crucial for older patients and those with severe infections or low albumin levels to avoid toxicity.

LncRNA-NEAT1 facilitates autophagy to boost pemetrexed resistance in lung adenocarcinoma via the mir-379-3p/HIF1A pathway.

Hum Exp Toxicol

October 2024

Department of Hematology & Oncology, The First Hospital of Changsha (The Affiliated Changsha Hospital of Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University), Changsha, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how lncRNA-NEAT1 contributes to the resistance of lung adenocarcinoma cells to the chemotherapy drug pemetrexed, which is commonly used to treat this type of cancer.
  • - By analyzing tissue samples and modifying cell lines, it was found that lncRNA-NEAT1 is highly expressed in resistant cells and its depletion increases cell death and sensitivity to pemetrexed.
  • - The research reveals that lncRNA-NEAT1 interacts with miR-379-3p, which regulates a protein called HIF1A, leading to changes in autophagy and drug resistance in lung adenocarcinoma cells.
