This study aimed at producing an updated assessment of the incidence of anaphylaxis associated with COVID-19 vaccines based on pharmacovigilance data. Anaphylactic reaction and anaphylactic shock data post-COVID-19-vaccination reported from week 52, 2020 to week 1 or week 2, 2023 were collected from the VAERS and EudraVigilance databases, respectively, and analyzed comparatively. Incidence rates were calculated using the corresponding administered vaccine doses as denominators for all licensed vaccines and both platform types (mRNA or vectored).

Aim: The present study aimed to estimate the anaphylaxis rates following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination in children and adolescents in Europe.

Methods: We retrieved data on 371 anaphylaxis cases following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination in children ≤ 17 years old notified to EudraVigilance as of October 8, 2022. Overall, 27,120,512 doses of BNT162b2 vaccine and 1,400,300 doses of mRNA-1273 vaccine have been delivered to children during the study period.

Accumulating evidence considers psoriasis a systemic inflammatory disorder that is associated with comorbidities such as psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. Although the precise pathogenetic links between psoriasis and atherosclerosis warrants further investigation, it is believed that chronic systemic inflammation along with the T helper (Th)-1 and Th17 polarization are associated with endothelial dysfunction and subsequent acceleration of atherosclerosis. Considering the above, several studies have evaluated if optimal control of the inflammation in psoriasis by inhibiting interleukins targeting the Interleukin (IL)-23/Th17 axis could subsequently reduce the atherosclerotic process during anti-psoriatic treatment by using a variety of surrogate markers of subclinical atherosclerosis.

Background: Brodalumab, a fully human IgG2k antibody blocking the receptor of IL17, is characterized by a rapid onset of action with high skin clearance rates in clinical trials. Since setting PASI90/100 or absolute PASI ≤ 3 as treatment goals have become attainable, evaluating the effectiveness and safety profile of biologic agents, such as brodalumab, in a real-world setting is essential.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety profile of brodalumab over a period of 104 weeks in everyday practice.

Article Synopsis
  • * A systematic review of 34 studies found a 6% overall prevalence of leishmaniasis among PWH, with significantly higher rates in Asia (17%) and America (9%) compared to Europe (4%).
  • * Factors like age, sex, and CD4 cell count influenced prevalence, and most cases involved HIV and VL-related Leishmania species, highlighting the need for further research on this co-infection.

Atopic Dermatitis: Striving for Reliable Biomarkers.

J Clin Med

August 2022

1st Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Andreas Sygros Hospital for Skin and Venereal Diseases, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, 16121 Athens, Greece.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a highly heterogeneous inflammatory disease regarding both its pathophysiology and clinical manifestations. However, it is treated according to the "one-size-fits-all" approach, which may restrict response to treatment. Thus, there is an unmet need for the stratification of patients with AD into distinct endotypes and clinical phenotypes based on biomarkers that will contribute to the development of precision medicine in AD.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the "drug survival" of several psoriasis treatments, including secukinumab and guselkumab, to compare their effectiveness and predict patient adherence to therapy.
  • Researchers analyzed data from nearly 5,000 treatment courses across multiple countries between 2015 and 2021, focusing on patients with moderate to severe psoriasis using various interleukin inhibitors.
  • Results indicated that IL-23 inhibitors generally had better drug survival rates after 24 and 36 months compared to IL-17 inhibitors, with specific percentages provided for each drug's effectiveness over time.

How to spot a basosquamous carcinoma: a study on demographics, clinical-dermatoscopic features and histopathological correlations.

Eur J Dermatol

December 2021

2nd Department of Dermatology-Venereology, "Attikon" General University Hospital, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medical School, Athens, Greece.

Basosquamous carcinoma (BSC) is a relatively rare type of neoplasm originating from basal cell carcinoma with features of squamous differentiation. BSC has an aggressive local behaviour with a tendency for recurrence and a less frequent metastatic potential The primary objective was to describe the dermatoscopic features of the tumour. Secondary goals were to detect the morphological features of the tumour along with patients' characteristics and to evaluate possible dermatoscopic and histopathological correlations Twenty-two patients with 25 BSCs were enrolled.

Introduction:: A severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spread worldwide during 2020, was declared as a public health emergency and potentially life-threatening. Patients with hematologic malignancies may have an increased risk of severe COVID-19, due to immunosuppression related to the underlying disease and its treatment. In the absence of specific data, potential risk factors for severe events of COVID-19 should be considered as for other community acquired respiratory virus (CARV) infections: >60 years, severe immunodeficiency, chemotherapy treatment.

The effect of anxiety, psychopathological symptoms and personality traits on response to treatment in male patients with anogenital warts: a prospective study.

J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol

September 2021

1st Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, "A. Sygros" Hospital for Skin and Venereal Diseases, Athens, Greece.

Background: In the era of precision medicine, identification of possible predictive factors of clinical response to treatment is fundamental. This need is particularly strong for anogenital warts (AGW), because there are several treatment modalities with different clearance and recurrence rates. However, data regarding the effect of mental health parameters on response to treatment in patients with AGW are lacking.

Unraveling the roles of vitamin D status and melanin during Covid‑19 (Review).

As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19) continues to spread worldwide, it has become evident that the morbidity and mortality rates clearly vary across nations. Although several factors may account for this disparity, striking differences within and between populations indicate that ethnicity might impact COVID‑19 clinical outcomes, reflecting the 'color of disease'. Therefore, the role of key biological variables that could interplay with viral spreading and severity indices has attracted increasing attention, particularly among non‑Caucasian populations.

Incidence of anogenital warts: epidemiological risk factors and real-life impact of human papillomavirus vaccination.

Int J STD AIDS

January 2021

1st Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, "A. Sygros" Hospital for Skin and Venereal Diseases, Athens, Greece.

Anogenital warts (AGWs) rank among the most frequent sexually transmitted infections in young adults. They are benign lesions, but they pose a significant economic cost to health care systems and a substantial psychological burden on patients, who need evidence-based counselling. Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination has shown very high protection rates against AGWs in clinical trials and real-world settings but vaccination coverage remains low in many countries.

Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an obscure disease presenting with painful, deep-seated nodules and abscess formation in body areas rich in apocrine glands. Several factors, including thyroid disease and active smoking, have been reported to be associated with HS, but it remains unclear if such associations are related to clinical HS severity. The aim of this prospective cross-sectional study is to investigate the association between active smoking and thyroid disease and HS, as well as to determine if these associations are related to HS severity.
