Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) is an essential regulator of cellular metabolism and redox processes. NAD levels and the dynamics of NAD metabolism change with increasing age but can be modulated via the diet or medication. Because NAD metabolism is complex and its regulation still insufficiently understood, achieving specific outcomes without perturbing delicate balances through targeted pharmacological interventions remains challenging.

Turkiye, with its origins in an enduring civilisation rooted in preceding Turkish states from ancient and medieval eras, possesses its own firmly established legal traditions. Legislation concerning to the mentally ill was introduced post the French Revolution in the Ottoman Empire and underwent reforms with the advent of Turkiye's modern Republic in 1923, led by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This remains an ongoing process of enhancement, despite the absence of a well-established mental health law.

Article Synopsis
  • Inborn metabolic diseases in adults are often overlooked, particularly in routine diagnostics where suspicion is low.
  • A young patient initially diagnosed with anxiety disorder was ultimately found to have Hartnup disease after a series of unsuccessful treatments and extensive testing, which included whole-exome sequencing.
  • Following diagnosis, dietary changes and niacin supplementation led to significant improvements in the patient's condition, emphasizing the need for metabolic assessments in challenging neuropsychiatric cases.

Objective: The primary aim of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of homicide cases and their perpetrators with psychotic illnesses in Italy and Turkiye, identifying the extent to which country-specific factors influence offender profiles and crime-scene characteristics.

Method: This cross-national chart review study recruited individuals with psychotic illnesses from forensic psychiatric centers in Italy and Turkiye who were referred for criminal responsibility assessments. Data were collected on the offenders' background characteristics, psychiatric history, victim profiles, and crime-scene details.

Background And Objectives: Bipolar electrocautery systems in neurosurgical procedures may induce thermal damage to adjacent tissues, especially neural tissues. Therefore, it is crucial to control thermal spread from the tips of bipolar forceps into adjacent tissues. The goal of this study was to compare the thermal damage induced in unintended adjacent tissues during coagulation with 6 different bipolar forceps.

Introduction: Antipsychotic psychopharmacotherapy is associated with the risk of drug-induced liver injury (DILI). However, understanding specific risk factors remains challenging due to limited data. This study investigates the relationship between receptor binding affinities and occupancies of antipsychotics and their associated hepatotoxic risks.

  • Stigma in multiple sclerosis (MS) leads to negative outcomes such as anxiety, depression, and social isolation, although there's currently no specific scale to measure it.
  • The study aimed to create and validate a "Multiple Sclerosis Stigma Scale (MSSS)" through a three-phase methodological approach, which included defining stigma, generating items, and testing the scale's psychometric properties.
  • The final 12-item MSSS showed strong reliability and validity in assessing stigma, revealing two main factors: discrimination and disclosure, making it suitable for use with Turkish MS patients.

Background: Delay discounting describes the devaluation of future outcomes over time and is a popular behavioral construct in addiction research. Prior studies show modest yet consistent associations between problematic alcohol use and delayed reward discounting (DRD). However, the potential confounding influence of socioeconomic status (SES, e.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global health crisis and a significant increase in psychological distress and psychopathological symptoms. We conducted a randomized controlled trial with two online interventions derived from positive psychology (PP) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) in N = 138 "homestayers" during the first lock-down period in Germany. PP exercises had a positive impact on anxiety scores, which decreased significantly during the intervention, particularly in participants without access to a garden.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between childhood trauma and depression, focusing on how anxiety sensitivity mediates this relationship.
  • It involved 110 participants diagnosed with depression, who completed several assessments to evaluate their experiences with childhood trauma and anxiety.
  • Findings revealed that emotional neglect and abuse during childhood are significant predictors of depressive symptoms, potentially due to how they influence cognitive perceptions of stress and self-worth.

  • A study explored the effects of high-altitude mountain sports on individuals with pre-existing mental disorders, finding that many experienced improved symptoms during these activities, particularly those with mental disorders.
  • 44.7% of participants with mental disorders reported symptom relief at high altitude, while a significantly lower percentage of those with somatic disorders felt the same way.
  • The findings highlight that many individuals with mental disorders do not communicate their conditions to tour partners or seek medical advice, indicating a need for greater awareness and destigmatization within the mountain sports community.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looks at how doctors can figure out who might have memory problems after spine surgery in older patients, focusing on those 60 and up.
  • They're using special tests before surgery, like brain scans and blood flow tests, to see if a certain measurement (the pulsatility index) can predict if someone will have issues like confusion after surgery.
  • The results showed that about 1 in 5 patients had post-operative delirium, and older patients were more likely to experience it, with specific test scores helping to predict these problems.

Department of Psychiatry, Bakirkoy Prof. Mazhar Osman Training and Research Hospital for Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery, University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Turkey.

Background: Schizophrenia is a chronic severe mental disorder characterized by impairment in cognition, emotion, perception, and other aspects of behavior. In light of the association of craniofacial dysmorphology with schizophrenia, mandibular morphology may provide clues about the role of neurodevelopment in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to compare the mandibular morphology of patients with schizophrenia with controls using digital panoramic radiography (DPR).

The presence of specific craniofacial deviations may be evidence of abnormal early brain development in bipolar disorder (BD). This study aimed to compare mandibular morphology in patients with BD versus nonpsychiatric controls using panoramic radiography. A total of 215 recorded images, 70 patients with BD and 145 controls, were evaluated.

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the transcriptomic signatures in alcohol use disorder.

Mol Psychiatry

January 2025

Institute of Psychopharmacology, Central Institute of Mental Health, Mannheim, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.

Currently available clinical treatments on alcohol use disorder (AUD) exhibit limited efficacy and new druggable targets are required. One promising approach to discover new molecular treatment targets involves the transcriptomic profiling of brain regions within the addiction neurocircuitry, utilizing animal models and postmortem brain tissue from deceased patients with AUD. Unfortunately, such studies suffer from large heterogeneity and small sample sizes.
