Introduction: COVID-19 is a disease characterized by high in-hospital mortality, which seems to be dependent on many predisposing factors.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical symptoms, abnormalities in the results of laboratory tests, and coexisting chronic diseases that independently affected the risk of in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19.
Patients And Methods: We analyzed the records of patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized from 6 March 2020 to 30 November 2021.
Purpose: Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) are the most frequent infectious complication in patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). We aim to report the clinical characteristics of ICU-admitted patients due to nosocomial LRTI and to describe their microbiology and clinical outcomes.
Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted in 13 countries over two continents from 9th May 2016 until 16th August 2019.

Aim Of The Study: Despite the excellent effectiveness of direct-acting antivirals (DAA) in the treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, still a few percent of patients fail therapy. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of triple vs double rescue treatment in such a population.
Material And Methods: The study included all consecutive DAA-experienced patients retreated with pangenotypic options from the EpiTer-2 database, a retrospective national multicenter real-world project evaluating antiviral treatment in HCV-infected patients in 2015-2023.

Leprosy is a neglected tropical disease that is still present worldwide despite efforts aimed at elimination of the disease. The BaAka Pygmy community inhabiting rural areas in the Central African Republic is one of the most leprosy-vulnerable populations. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of leprosy in the BaAka Pygmy population.

Background: The Global Typhoid Genomics Consortium was established to bring together the typhoid research community to aggregate and analyse serovar Typhi (Typhi) genomic data to inform public health action. This analysis, which marks 22 years since the publication of the first Typhi genome, represents the largest Typhi genome sequence collection to date (n=13,000).
Methods: This is a meta-analysis of global genotype and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) determinants extracted from previously sequenced genome data and analysed using consistent methods implemented in open analysis platforms GenoTyphi and Pathogenwatch.

This study aimed to compare the clinical picture of COVID-19 in the initial and later period of Omicron dominance and to identify populations still at risk. A retrospective comparison of the clinical data of 965 patients hospitalized during the early period of Omicron's dominance (EO, January-June 2022) with 897 patients from a later period (LO, July 2022-April 2023) from the SARSTer database was performed. Patients hospitalized during LO, compared to EO, were older, had a better clinical condition on admission, had a lower need for oxygen and mechanical ventilation, had less frequent lung involvement in imaging, and showed much faster clinical improvement.

During the surveillance of mpox, we encountered cases of Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) in suspected mpox cases amongst children & adults. This study focused on the genomic characterization of VZV in India.

Several biomarkers have been evaluated as predictors of severity or in directing the treatment of COVID-19, however there are no conclusive results. In this study, we evaluated serum levels of cytokines, chemokines, and cell growth factors in association with the pathobiology of mild to moderate SARS-CoV-2 infection. Serum levels of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients (n = 113) and flu symptoms individuals negative for SARS-CoV-2 (n = 58), tested by the RT-qPCR test-nasal swab were compared to healthy controls (n = 53).

Early diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and retention in care are cornerstones of better prognosis of people living with HIV (PLWH). The purpose of this study was to compare patients who discontinued antiretroviral treatment (ART) with those who were diagnosed late with HIV. In this retrospective analysis of PLWH under the care of one of the Infectious Diseases Clinics in Poland between 2020 and 2021, two sub-analyses were carried out.

The molecular diversity of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is exceptionally complex and based on the characterization of sequences coding for several viral genes. The aim of this study was to analyze the distribution of EBV types 1 and 2 and to characterize LMP1 variants in a cohort of 73 patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM), as well as to investigate a possible association between viral diversity and relevant clinical parameters. Population-based sequencing of gene showed the presence of EBV type 1 in all IM patients.

Background: Eastern Europe has a high burden of tuberculosis (TB)/HIV coinfection with high mortality shortly after TB diagnosis. This study assesses TB recurrence, mortality rates and causes of death among TB/HIV patients from Eastern Europe up to 11 years after TB diagnosis.
Methods: A longitudinal cohort study of TB/HIV patients enrolled between 2011 and 2013 (at TB diagnosis) and followed-up until end of 2021.

Background: Rabies is a fatal disease caused by the rabies virus, usually transmitted by a bite by an infected animal. Because there is no effective treatment, prophylaxis is crucial. The aim of the study was to analyse the circumstances of exposure, characterise the animals that were a potential source of infection and evaluate the frequency of post-exposure prophylaxis in children.

Background: It is estimated that 58 million people worldwide are infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Patients with severe psychiatric disorders could not be treated with previously available interferon-based therapies due to their unfavorable side effect profile. This has changed with the introduction of direct-acting antivirals (DAA), although their real-life tolerance and effectiveness in patients with different psychiatric disorders remain to be demonstrated.

In chronic hepatitis C (CHC), characterized by exhaustion of T-cell function, increased frequencies of double-positive (DP) (CD4CD8) cells are present in peripheral blood. We compared the exhaustion phenotype between DP and single positive (SP) T-cells, including HCV-specific cells, and assessed the effect of successful HCV treatment on inhibitory receptors expression. Blood samples from 97 CHC patients were collected before and six months post-treatment.

The global mortality rate is known to be the highest due to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Thus, preventive, and early CVD risk identification in a non-invasive manner is vital as healthcare cost is increasing day by day. Conventional methods for risk prediction of CVD lack robustness due to the non-linear relationship between risk factors and cardiovascular events in multi-ethnic cohorts.
