Interferometry as a tool for evaluating effects of antimicrobial doses on Mycobacterium bovis growth.

Tuberculosis (Edinb)

December 2015

Instituto de Pesquisa de Produtos Naturais, Centro de Ciências da Saúde, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 21941-902, Brazil. Electronic address:

Interferometry was used together with the conventional microplate resazurin assay to evaluate the antimycobacterial properties of essential oil (EO) from fruits of Pterodon emarginatus and also of rifampicin against Mycobacterium bovis. The aim of this work is not only to investigate the potential antimycobacterial activity of this EO, but also to test the interferometric method in comparison with the conventional one. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) values of EO (625 μg/mL) and rifampicin (4 ng/mL) were firstly identified with the microplate method.

Introduction: Although the relationship between enuresis and breastfeeding is still poorly documented in the literature, a possible association is speculated as both are strongly associated with children's development. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to evaluate whether there is an association between primary enuresis and the duration of exclusive breastfeeding.

Material And Methods: This is an observational, case-control study, involving 200 children and adolescents from 6 to 14 years old, who were divided into two groups: the enuresis group (EG), composed of 100 children with primary enuresis; and the control group (CG) of 100 matched children without enuresis.

Background: Physiological reflexes modulated primarily by the vagus nerve allow the heart to decelerate and accelerate rapidly after a deep inspiration followed by rapid movement of the limbs. This is the physiological and pharmacologically validated basis for the 4-s exercise test (4sET) used to assess the vagal modulation of cardiac chronotropism.

Objective: To present reference data for 4sET in healthy adults.

Purpose: The followup and treatment of children with vesicoureteral reflux has been debated for many years. Antibiotic prophylaxis has a role for preventing urinary tract infection in these children. Recent studies and guidelines suggested that prophylaxis has little or no role in preventing urinary tract infection in those children, especially those with low grades (I and II) of reflux.
