The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed the paradigms for disease surveillance and rapid deployment of scientific-based evidence for understanding disease biology, susceptibility and treatment. We have organized a large-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS) in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected individuals in Sao Paulo, Brazil, one of the most affected areas of the pandemic in the country, itself one of the most affected in the world. Here, we present the results of the initial analysis in the first 5233 participants of the BRACOVID study.

Data from the general population suggest that fatality rates declined during the course of the pandemic. This analysis, using data extracted from the Brazilian Kidney Transplant COVID-19 Registry, seeks to determine fatality rates over time since the index case on March 3rd, 2020. Data from hospitalized patients with RT-PCR positive SARS-CoV-2 infection from March to August 2020 (35 sites, 878 patients) were compared using trend tests according to quartiles (Q1: <72 days; Q2: 72-104 days; Q3: 105-140 days; Q4: >140 days after the index case).

The implications of ligating the native ureter without ipsilateral nephrectomy after primary kidney transplant pyeloureterostomy (PU) have been described previously. This single-center retrospective cohort study including 4,215 kidney transplants performed between February 2010 and December 2014, analyzed urological complications following primary (P-PU) and secondary (S-PU) pyeloureterostomy used to treat urological leaks (UL-PU) and ureteral stenosis (US-PU) without concomitant ipsilateral nephrectomy, in a large cohort of patients. There were 495 (11.

Background: the predictive ability of severity scores for mortality in patients admitted to intensive care units is not well-known among kidney transplanted (KT) patients, especially those diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the predictive ability of severity scores for mortality in KT recipients.
Methods: 51 KT recipients with COVID-19 diagnosis were enrolled.

Background: Transplant renal artery stenosis (TRAS) is the main vascular complication of kidney transplantation. For research and treatment purposes, several authors consider critical renal artery stenosis to be greater than 50%, and percutaneous intervention is indicated in this scenario. However, there are no reports in the current literature on the evolution of patients with less than 50% stenosis.

Objectives: To describe a stentless modified Lich-Gregoir technique (mLG) for ureteroneocystostomy in renal transplantation (RT), with early bladder catheter (BC) removal (under 48 hours), and compare the postoperative results with those of the traditional technique (LG) with routine bladder catheter removal (4 to 5 days). The modification consists of maintaining a thin layer of detrusor fibers covering the bladder mucosa during dissection, which is incorporated into the anastomosis to reinforce the ureteroneocystostomy.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective cohort study compared the postoperative outcomes of 100 consecutive patients who underwent mLG with early removal of BC between October 2018 to November 2019 with those of a historical cohort of 165 consecutive patients transplanted using stentless LG and routine removal of BC, who underwent surgery between July 2017 and September 2018.

The growing demand for transplant kidneys requires strategies to increase organ supply and avoid long waiting periods on the list. The increase in the number of transplants from living donors involves the growth in the use of unrelated donors and paired kidney donation. Most of these transplants are performed in the USA, where they already represent, respectively, 34% and 16% of total transplants from living donors.

Background: Anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 mRNA vaccines elicit lower humoral responses in solid-organ transplant recipients. This is the first prospective trial investigating the effect of an inactivated whole-virion vaccine in kidney transplant recipients.
Methods: Prospective, single-center, phase 4, interventional study.

Background: Kidney allograft failure is a common cause of end-stage renal disease. We aimed to develop a dynamic artificial intelligence approach to enhance risk stratification for kidney transplant recipients by generating continuously refined predictions of survival using updates of clinical data.
Methods: In this observational study, we used data from adult recipients of kidney transplants from 18 academic transplant centres in Europe, the USA, and South America, and a cohort of patients from six randomised controlled trials.

As the risk of graft loss due to acute rejection has declined, the goal of post-transplant management has switched to long-term preservation of organ function. Minimizing calcineurin inhibitor (CNI)-related nephrotoxicity is a key component of this objective. Everolimus is a mammalian target of rapamycin inhibitor/proliferation-signal inhibitor with potent immunosuppressive and anti-proliferative effects.

Background: The emergence of multidrug-resistant NDM-1-producing enterobacteriaceae strains has become a threat to inpatients, especially to immunosuppressed ones, such as kidney transplant recipients. NDM-1 is a carbapenemase that makes gram-negative bacteria resistant to many types of antibiotics. The incidence of carbapenemase-producing enterobacteria infection in solid organ transplant recipients is around 3 to 10%, with a mortality rate of up to 30%.

Background And Objectives: Patients undergoing kidney replacement therapies (KRTs) have a poor prognosis after Covid-19 infection. Few studies have compared the outcomes of such patients in the different KRT modalities. This study aimed to analyze the 30-day Covid-19-associated case-fatality rate of dialysis and kidney transplant patients.

Background: Melanized fungi are a distinct group of pathogens that cause infections like chromoblastomycosis and phaeohyphomycosis, especially in a state of immunosuppression including solid organ transplant recipients. Guidelines for the treatment of these infections are lacking, and there is no available standard recommendation.
Objective: To evaluate the therapeutic aspects of subcutaneous melanized fungal infections in kidney transplant recipients.

Objectives: Development of pharmaceutical agents in transplantation is currently limited by long waits for hard endpoints. We applied a validated integrative risk-prognostication system integrative Box (iBox) as a surrogate endpoint to the TRANSFORM Study, a large randomised controlled trial, to project individual patient long-term kidney allograft survival from 1 year to 11 years after randomisation.
Design: Post-hoc analysis of a randomised open-label controlled trial.

Background: Preliminary data suggest that COVID-19 has reduced access to solid organ transplantation. However, the global consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on transplantation rates and the effect on waitlisted patients have not been reported. We aimed to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on transplantation and investigate if the pandemic was associated with heterogeneous adaptation in terms of organ transplantation, with ensuing consequences for waitlisted patients.
