Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health problem, with adverse outcomes of kidney failure, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and premature death. According to European Kidney Health Alliance (EKHA) currently, 1 in 10 Europeans has chronic kidney disease (CKD) and it is predicted to be the fifth leading cause of death worldwide by 2040. Background: The expressions of a "wish to hasten death" or "wish to die" raise ethical concerns and challenges. These expressions are related to ethical principles intertwined within the field of medical ethics, particularly in end-of-life care. Although some reviews were conducted about this topic, none of them provides an in-depth analysis of the meanings behind the "wish to hasten death/die" based specifically on the ethical principles of autonomy, dignity, and vulnerability.

Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is a dominant neurodegenerative disease caused by an expanded CAG repeat in the gene encoding the ataxin-3 protein. Several cellular processes, including transcription and apoptosis, are disrupted in MJD. To gain further insights into the extent of dysregulation of mitochondrial apoptosis in MJD and to evaluate if expression alterations of specific apoptosis genes/proteins can be used as transcriptional biomarkers of disease, the expression levels of , and and the / ratio (an indicator of susceptibility to apoptosis) were assessed in blood and post-mortem brain samples from MJD subjects and MJD transgenic mice and controls.

Hemorrhagic cholecystitis is a rare condition with several possible causes. Despite being a difficult diagnosis, it is an important one considering the fatal possibility for the patient. The following is the case of a 68-year-old patient with dual antiplatelet therapy, who underwent coronary angiography and angioplasty in a hypocoagulate setting, developing a hemorrhagic cholecystitis.

Pulmonary embolism due to primary antiphospholipid syndrome is rarely associated with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, and therefore according to the latest guidelines on pulmonary hypertension, routine screening is not recommended. We describe a young patient with a late diagnosis of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension in the context of pulmonary embolism, primary antiphospholipid syndrome and suboptimal anticoagulation. Of note, mild cardiopulmonary symptoms were consistently misattributed to a depressive disorder because physical examination was normal, serial Doppler echocardiography failed to show pulmonary hypertension, and all other diagnostic tests were normal.

Background And Purpose: In spinocerebellar ataxia type 3/Machado-Joseph disease (SCA3/MJD), the length of CAG repeat expansions in ATXN3 shows an inverse correlation with age at onset (AO). Recently, a formula for predicting AO based on CAG expansion was developed for European carriers. We tested this formula in SCA3/MJD carriers from distinct origins and developed population-specific models to predict AO.
