Introduction: This study explores the possibility of a relationship between the sphericity degree of a target volume with the dose distribution. This relationship is evaluated based on the ratio isodose volume / target volume (IV/TV) and the metrics coverage, i.e.

Aims: To develop a document by Brazilian Cardiovascular Imaging Department (DIC) and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) to review and summarize the most recent evidences about the non-invasive assessment of patients with Chagas disease, with the intent to set up a framework for standardized cardiovascular imaging to assess cardiovascular morphologic and functional disturbances, as well as to guide the subsequent process of clinical decision-making.
Methods And Results: Chagas disease remains one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in Latin America, and has become a health problem in non-endemic countries. Dilated cardiomyopathy is the most severe manifestation of Chagas disease, which causes substantial disability and early mortality in the socially most productive population leading to a significant economical burden.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare image quality and radiation dose of coronary computed tomography (CT) angiography performed with dual-source CT scanner using 2 different protocols in patients with atrial fibrillation.
Methods: Forty-seven patients with AF underwent 2 different acquisition protocols: double high-pitch (DHP) spiral acquisition and retrospective spiral acquisition. The image quality was ranked according to a qualitative score by 2 experts: 1, no evident motion; 2, minimal motion not influencing coronary artery luminal evaluation; and 3, motion with impaired luminal evaluation.

Objective: We sought to compare the new transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) device ACURATE neo (ACT) with the already established CoreValve (MCV) and SAPIEN XT (SXT) for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis (AS).
Background: Very few data on TAVR devices are available beyond MCV and SAPIEN and there is no previous study comparing ACT with MCV and SXT.
Methods: We prospectively evaluated consecutive patients who underwent transfemoral TAVR for the treatment of severe AS.

First-generation bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS), represented by the three marked-approved devices (Absorb BVS 1.1, DESolve NX, and DREAMS) have demonstrated, in low to moderate angiographic scenarios, similar efficacy to current generation metallic drug-eluting stents. However, a trend toward more device thrombosis have been observed, especially when the scaffolds are used in off-label situations.

We sought to evaluate the immediate and long-term incidence of death and changes in life quality in a consecutive cohort submitted to ASA.
Methods And Results: Between October 1998 and December 2013, a total of 56 patients (mean age 53.

Introduction: Cost-effectiveness (CE) studies of percutaneous (PC) versus surgical (SC) atrial septal defect closure are lacking.
Methods: A systematic literature review in children and a CE analysis based on a model of long-term outcomes were performed. Direct costs of PC and SC were US$8700 (defined arbitrarily) and US$5700 (actually paid), respectively.

Report of three cases of chylothorax and one case of chylous ascites in children who had undergone cardiac surgery with no response to routine clinical treatment, based on fasting and long-term parenteral nutrition. Treatment with octreotide at an initial dose of 1.0 mcg/kg/h was chosen, with a gradual increase of 1.

We report an eight-year-old child presented with classical features of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and with New York Heart Association (NYHA) class III symptoms, eight months after myectomy and refractory to medical treatment. Cardiac transplantation was indicated due to the severity of symptoms. But the lymphocyte reaction test showed almost 100% reaction of antibodies, and the surgeons rejected the heart transplantation for fear of hyperacute rejection.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an arrhythmia frequently seen in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery. In this context, it is associated with the presence of comorbidities, longer length of hospital stay, and higher costs related to surgery. The mechanisms involved in the genesis of AF in the postoperative period of cardiac surgery (AFPO) are different from those causing paroxysmal AF.

Arritmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is characterized by the gradual replacement of myocytes by adipose and fibrous tissue. Described in 1977, is considered a potentially lethal cause of cardiac disease poorly understood. This disorder usually involves the right ventricle and has been associated with arrthymia, heart failure, and sudden death.

Background: Recently, cardiologists have treated more complex patients and lesions with drug-eluting stents (DES). However, long-term efficacy and safety of the off-label use of these new devices is yet to be demonstrated.
Methods: The Drug-Eluting Stents in the Real World (DESIRE) registry is a prospective, nonrandomized single-center registry with consecutive patients treated solely with DES between May 2002 and May 2007.

Background: Despite the increasing number of elderly people, this high-complexity subset of patients is often excluded from randomized trials of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and, therefore, limited data are available about their outcomes after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation. We sought to compare the very long-term (> 1 year) clinical follow up of octogenarians treated with DES compared to younger individuals.
Methods: The DESIRE registry is a prospective, nonrandomized, single-center registry with consecutive patients treated solely with DES between May 2002 and May 2007.

The interrupted aortic arch (IAA) is a rare cardiopathy, with high morbimortality when treatment is delayed. This study is a case of IAA with atypical clinical behavior in a 19-year-old patient. The history and the clinical assessment were compatible with recent heart failure, associated to syncope episodes and reduction of pulses in the lower limbs.

Aims And Objectives: This study sought to assess the impact of a standardized protocol to maintain nasoenteral tube (NET) patency in patients requiring fluid restriction and identify factors associated with tube patency.
Background: Nasoenteral tube obstruction may interrupt nutritional support and prohibit drug administration. Balancing NET patency in the context of fluid restriction can be a challenge.

Objective: To identify factors associated with a higher likelihood of in-hospital death in patients submitted to coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) who developed atrial fibrillation (AF) postoperatively.
Methods: The authors analyzed data from 397 consecutive patients submitted to CABG that developed AF postoperatively between 2000 and 2003. The patients were divided into 2 groups: group 1 (G1) comprised patients who survived (n=369); and group 2 (G2) comprised patients who died during hospital stay (n=28).

Persistent cyanosis is a frequent complication in the post-operative period of Sano modification of the Norwood procedure. It may be explained by a dynamic proximal shunt stenosis of the synthetic conduit that links the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery, as detected by echo cardiographic study. The use of beta-blockers in the post-operative period has been recently described in order to improve the arterial oxygen saturation.
