The aim of this analysis was to evaluate perceived barriers related to HCV testing, management and treatment among physicians practicing in clinics offering opioid agonist treatment (OAT). C-SCOPE was a study consisting of a self-administered survey among physicians practicing at clinics providing OAT in Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States between April and May 2017. A 5-point Likert scale (1 = not a barrier, 3 = moderate barrier, 5 = extreme barrier) was used to measure responses to perceived barriers for HCV testing, evaluation and treatment across the domains of the health system, clinic and patient.

Background: Existing guidelines on the evaluation and preparation of recipients for kidney transplantation target the entire spectrum of patients with end-stage renal disease. Within the ERA-EDTA Developing Education Science and Care for Renal Transplantation in European States (DESCARTES) Working Group, it was proposed that in a subset of relatively young patients (<40 years) without significant comorbidities (such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease), the work-up for transplantation could be restricted to a small set of tests.
Methods: Aiming for agreement between transplant centres across Europe, we surveyed the opinion of 80 transplant professionals from 11 European states on the composition of a minimal work-up.

throat infection is a clinically relevant trigger of both guttate and chronic plaque psoriasis, and it provides an ideal context in which to study the pathogenesis of these diseases using an antigen-dependent approach. Circulating cutaneous lymphocyte-associated antigen (CLA) positive (+) memory T cells are a subset of peripheral lymphocytes whose phenotype and function are related to immunological mechanisms in the skin. These cells are considered peripheral biomarkers of T-cell-mediated skin diseases.

The aim of this paper was to examine the patterns of a large sample of patients receiving CLP service over a 10-year-period (2005–2014) and to determine the possible changes over time of the clinical practice. The sample size of our study, the duration of the observation period and the application of standardized operating procedures for acquiring and coding data, will provide more robust evidence than has been reported by most similar studies published in the last years.

Transplantation medicine is a rapidly evolving field. Keeping afloat of the published literature to offer the best clinical care to our patients is a daunting task. As part of its educational mission, the Descartes advisory board identified seven topics in kidney transplantation where there has been substantial progresses over the last years: kidney allocation within Eurotransplant; kidney exchange strategies; kidney machine perfusion strategies; the changing landscape of anti-human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies; the new immunosuppressive drugs in the pipeline; strategies for immunosuppression minimization; and the continuous enigma of focal segmental glomerular sclerosis recurrence after transplantation.

Methods: We performed a propensity score matching study to compare the effectiveness of various classes of antihypertensive drugs on cardiovascular (CV) mortality in 2518 incident hemodialysis patients in Spain. The patients had initially received antihypertensive therapy with a renin-angiotensin system (RAS) blocker (728 patients), a ß-blocker (679 patients), antihypertensive drugs other than a RAS blocker or a ß-blocker (787 patients), or the combination of a ß-blocker and a RAS inhibitor (324 patients).
Several reviews and meta-analyses on modulated inflammatory and immunologic responses after the administration of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in different diseases and conditions have been published. However, omega-3 PUFAs exert several other actions which are not directly related to immunologic or inflammatory responses. The aim of this paper was to review the effects which are not directly related to immunologic and inflammatory responses of intravenous lipid emulsions (IVLEs) containing fish oil (FO) in parenteral nutrition (PN) for adult patients.

Two recent matched cohort studies from the USA and Norway published in 2014 have raised some concerns related to the long-term safety of kidney living donation. Further studies on the long-term risks of living donation have since been published. In this position paper, Developing Education Science and Care for Renal Transplantation in European States (DESCARTES) board members critically review the literature in an effort to summarize the current knowledge concerning long-term risks of kidney living donation to help physicians for decision-making purposes and for providing information to the prospective live donors.

Trastuzumab became the therapy of choice for patients with HER2-positive breast cancer in 1998, and it has provided clinical benefit ever since. However, a significant percentage of patients show primary resistance to trastuzumab at diagnosis, and most patients with metastatic disease that initially respond to trastuzumab eventually progress (acquired resistance). Consequently, there is an urgent need to improve our knowledge of the mechanisms governing resistance, so that specific therapeutic strategies can be developed to provide improved efficacy.

Objectives: Increased lipoprotein (a) serum concentrations seems to be a cardiovascular risk factor; this has not been confirmed in extracoronary atherosclerosis complications. We therefore wished to gain a deeper insight into relationship between the plasma concentrations of lipoprotein (a) and the micro- and macro-vascular complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus and to identify possible differences in this association.
Methods: This is a descriptive observational cross-sectional study.

Background: Bariatric surgery has been shown to be effective in resolving co-morbid conditions even in patients with a body mass index (BMI)<35 kg/m(2). A question arises regarding the metabolic benefits of bariatric surgery in metabolically healthy but morbidly obese (MHMO) patients, characterized by a low cardiometabolic risk. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of bariatric surgery on cardiometabolic risk factors among MHMO and metabolically unhealthy morbidly obese (MUMO) adults.
