Orthopedic Surgeons' Accuracy When Orienting an Acetabular Cup. A Comparison with Untrained Individuals.

Previous studies demonstrated a huge variability among surgeons when it comes to reproducing the position of an acetabular cup in total hip arthroplasty. Our main objective is to determine if orthopedic surgeons can replicate a given orientation on a pelvic model better than untrained individuals. Our secondary objective is to determine if experience has any influence on their ability for this task.

Post-Vasectomy Semen Analysis: Optimizing Laboratory Procedures and Test Interpretation through a Clinical Audit and Global Survey of Practices.

Purpose: The success of vasectomy is determined by the outcome of a post-vasectomy semen analysis (PVSA). This article describes a step-by-step procedure to perform PVSA accurately, report data from patients who underwent post vasectomy semen analysis between 2015 and 2021 experience, along with results from an international online survey on clinical practice.

Materials And Methods: We present a detailed step-by-step protocol for performing and interpretating PVSA testing, along with recommendations for proficiency testing, competency assessment for performing PVSA, and clinical and laboratory scenarios.

The influence of treatment sequence in the prognostic value of TMPRSS2-ERG as biomarker of taxane resistance in castration-resistant prostate cancer.

TMPRSS2-ERG expression in blood has been correlated with low docetaxel benefit in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). This multicenter study aimed to prospectively asses its role as a taxane-resistance biomarker in blood and retrospectively in tumors, exploring also the impact of prior abiraterone/enzalutamide (A/E) in patients and in vitro. TMPRSS2-ERG was tested by quantitative reverse-transcription PCR.

Clinical, Patient-Reported, and Ultrasound Outcomes from an Open-Label, 12-week Observational Study of Certolizumab Pegol in Spanish Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis with or without Prior Anti-TNF Exposure.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness and safety of certolizumab pegol (CZP) in Spanish patients with RA.

Materials And Methods: SONAR (NCT01526434), a 12-week, open-label, prospective, observational, multicenter study. Patients with active RA for ≥3 months, according to ACR criteria, were treated with CZP (400mg at Weeks 0, 2 and 4, then 200mg every 2 weeks).

Improvement in Diagnosis and Treat-to-Target Management of Hyperuricemia in Gout: Results from the GEMA-2 Transversal Study on Practice.

Introduction: The objective of the study was to evaluate changes regarding main European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) recommendations on diagnosis and treatment of gout compared to a previous assessment.

Methods: The GEMA-2 (Gout Evaluation and MAnagement) is a transversal assessment of practice for gout by rheumatologists. Main outcome variables were improvement of the previous GEMA assessment regarding the rate of crystal-proven diagnosis and that reaching therapeutic serum urate target below 6 mg/dl at last visit.

The increased incidence and decreased mortality of breast cancer have produced an increased number of breast cancer survivors. The type of sequelae and comorbidities that these patients present call for a collaborative follow-up by hospital-based specialized care and primary care. In this document, we present a guideline drafted and agreed among scientific societies whose members care for breast cancer survivors.

Elbow dislocation with ipsilateral fracture of the distal radius associated with a brachial artery injury: A new pathological condition of traumatic origin.

Elbow dislocation associated with ipsilateral fracture of the distal radius and a brachial artery injury is an uncommon traumatic entity. The two references of this injury combination appeared in 2015, although both authors did not realise that they were the first two cases published in the medical literature. Although mentioned in the text of the articles, no mention was made of the fracture of the distal radius in the titles.

Results of allogeneic stem cell transplantation in the Spanish MDS registry: prognostic factors for low risk patients.

Although new agents have been approved for the treatment of MDS, the only curative approach is allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and thus, in particular circumstances this procedure has been proposed as a treatment option for low risk patients. We have retrospectively analyzed the results of HSCT in 291 patients from the Spanish MDS registry with special attention to low risk MDS (LR-MDS) in order to define the variables that could impact their clinical evolution after transplantation. Objectives: To determine whether feeding type of trophic feeds affect haematological and biochemical markers in the very preterm infant.

Design And Methods: Fifty-six very preterm infants were enrolled in this retrospective study (30 infants were included in the only human milk-fed group and 26 in the formula-fed group). Routine haematological and biochemical variables were collected in both groups on days 1 and 4 of life and fourteen serum markers were measured.

Simplified Acute Physiology Score III: a project for a new multidimensional tool for evaluating intensive care unit performance.

The Simplified Acute Physiology Score III Outcomes Research Group is developing an international multidimensional instrument for the global evaluation of intensive care unit performance. Among its specific objectives are the update of a severity of illness index (Simplified Acute Physiology Score) with a mortality prediction equation, with the hindsight of recent years, and the creation or application of novel instruments in the areas of infections and cost-effectiveness. Some important measurements such as the quality of life and the satisfaction of patients and professionals are not included.

Cost-minimisation analysis of pegylated liposomal doxorubicin hydrochloride versus topotecan in the treatment of patients with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer in Spain.

The study consisted of a cost-minimisation analysis since the findings from a multicentre randomised phase III trial showed that pegylated liposomal doxorubicin hydrochloride was at least as efficacious as topotecan. An economic model from the Spanish hospitals perspective was constructed to compare the costs derived from the treatment using both drugs in patients with recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer who failed a first-line platinum-containing regimen. The cost evaluation included direct medical costs: drug, drug administration and costs of managing adverse events.

Biomechanical evaluation of fixation of clavicular fractures.

Reproducible fractures of the midshaft of the clavicle were created in 14 fresh frozen human cadaveric clavicles. Under the three-point bending loading by a materials testing machine, the load to failure of fixation of the clavicular fractures treated with steel reconstruction plates (five specimens) and Herbert cannulated bone screw (nine specimens), was compared with a group control formed by five specimens of clavicles without osteosynthesis material. No statistically significant differences were observed between the three groups.

Background And Objectives: A salvage program including infusional high-dose ifosfamide plus etoposide (IFOVM) was evaluated in patients with refractory or relapsed aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Design And Methods: Forty-six patients were included. IFOVM consisted of ifosfamide (10 g/m2 as a 72-hour continuous infusion), etoposide (900 mg/m2) and methylprednisolone; responding patients underwent two cycles of DHAP and subsequently an autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (APBSCT) with BEAM as the conditioning regimen.

[Radiotherapy for the treatment of testicular seminomas].

Objective: Conventional treatment of testicular seminoma has been orchiectomy followed by adjuvant lymph node irradiation. Over the last 10 years the role of postoperative elective radiotherapy has been questioned. This paper reviews the role of radiotherapy in the treatment of seminoma of the testis.

[Clinical practice guidelines of the Spanish Society of Cardiology on pacemakers].

Following a brief introduction on the history and generic codification of the different cardiac stimulation methods available, the implantation techniques are described and the requisites, such as human resources, their qualifications and the materials required, which are essential in the organization of a Pacemaker Unit are discussed. The current indications for permanent cardiac stimulation are reported and are classified by sections in tales following the 1998 norms of the ACC/AHA. In another section, the indications in special situations such as hypertrophic or dilated cardiomyopathy are described.
