Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to explore how early hospital readmissions (within 30 days) affect the survival rates of patients with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) after their hospital stay.
  • - Out of 2,238 patients admitted to a respiratory ward from 2013 to 2016, 98 were diagnosed with ILD, and 74 were discharged, with 25% experiencing in-hospital mortality; 20.2% of those discharged were readmitted early.
  • - Findings revealed that early readmission is strongly linked to increased mortality rates at both 90 days and one year after discharge, indicating a need for preventive measures and further research on contributing factors.

Article Synopsis
  • - Leishmaniasis, caused by the Leishmania genus, is prevalent in the Americas, particularly with the species L. braziliensis, found in 18 countries, including Bolivia; the study investigates the complex taxonomy surrounding this species.
  • - In Bolivia, analysis of 41 strains revealed a distribution of 24 L. braziliensis, 16 L. braziliensis outliers, and 1 L. peruviana, with significant genetic distinctions identified through sequencing.
  • - Among 32 patients with tegumentary leishmaniasis, 69% had cutaneous lesions while 31% had mucocutaneous lesions; treatment failures were noted in several cases, highlighting the complexities in managing these infections

Background: To describe the number of visits (total and per COVID-19) attended by the Spanish hospital emergency departments (EDs) during the first wave of the pandemic (March-April 2020) compared to the same period in 2019, and to calculate the quantitative changes in healthcare activity and investigate the possible influence of hospital size and COVID-19 seroprevalence.

Method: Cross-sectional study that analyzes the number of visits to Spanish public EDs, reported through a survey of ED chiefs during the study periods. Changes in healthcare activity were described in each autonomous community and com-pared according to hospital size and the provincial impact of the pandemic.

Introduction: Down syndrome (DS), a genetic variant of early onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), lacks a suitable outcome measure for prevention trials targeting pre-dementia stages.

Methods: We used cognitive test data collected in several longitudinal aging studies internationally from 312 participants with DS without dementia to identify composites that were sensitive to change over time. We then conducted additional analyses to provide support for the utility of the composites.

Background: Urinary sodium excretion predicts long-term adverse events after discharge in patients with acute heart failure (AHF). The role of natriuresis as an early marker of poor diuretic response during an AHF episode has been scarcely investigated. We sought to evaluate whether early natriuresis or its change during heart failure hospitalization is associated with the development of in-hospital diuretic resistance (DR).

Background: Incidence of a second testicular tumor is higher in patients diagnosed with testicular cancer than in the general population. As incidence of unilateral germ cell cancer is increasing worldwide and most of these patients are cured, a growing number of patients at risk of developing a contralateral testis cancer is expected.

Objective: To analyze clinical and histological characteristics, as well as the absolute and cumulative incidence of a second testicular cancer in a cohort of 3,834 patients diagnosed with germ cell testicular cancer between I/1994 and I/2018 in 18 referral hospitals of the Spanish Germ Cell Cancer Group.

Institut de Recerca Biomèdica Sant Pau, Barcelona, Spain; Servei de Microbiologia, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Barcelona, Spain & Departament de Genètica i Microbiologia, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Bellaterra, Spain. Electronic address:

Among the 20 or so Leishmania spp. described as pathogenic for humans, those of the Leishmania donovani complex are the exclusive causative agents of systemic and fatal visceral leishmaniasis. Although well studied, the complex is taxonomically controversial, which hampers clinical and epidemiological research.

Introduction: We aimed to define prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD dementia using normative neuropsychological data in a large population-based cohort of adults with Down syndrome (DS).

Methods: Cross-sectional study. DS participants were classified into asymptomatic, prodromal AD and AD dementia, based on neurologist's judgment blinded to neuropsychological data (Cambridge Cognitive Examination for Older Adults with Down's syndrome [CAMCOG-DS] and modified Cued Recall Test [mCRT]).

To translate circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) into the clinic, a deeper understanding of the factors affecting their expression is needed. In this study, we explored the features affecting the expression of miRNAs and their genetic regulation using the expression data of 103 miRNAs obtained by qPCR in the platelet-poor plasma of 104 subjects. The principal components (PCs) of the expression of the miRNAs were associated with technical and biological features (e.

Background And Aim: Biological therapies may be changing the natural history of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), reducing the need for surgical intervention. We aimed to assess whether the availability of anti-TNF agents impacts the need for early surgery in Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: Retrospective, cohort study of patients diagnosed within a 6-year period before and after the licensing of anti-TNFs (1990-1995 and 2007-2012 for CD; 1995-2000 and 2007-2012 for UC) were identified in the ENEIDA Registry.

Background There is little knowledge about the significance of extremely high values (>655) for the ratio of sFlt-1 (soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1) to PlGF (placental growth factor). We aim to describe the time-to-delivery interval and maternal and perinatal outcomes when such values are demonstrated while assessing suspected or confirmed placental dysfunction based on clinical or sonographic criteria. Methods and Results A multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed on 237 singleton gestations between 20+0 and 37+0 weeks included at the time of first demonstrating a sFlt-1/PlGF ratio >655.

: The LRP1 (CR9) domain and, in particular, the sequence Gly-Cys (P3) plays a critical role in the binding and internalization of aggregated LDL (agLDL). We aimed to evaluate whether immunization with P3 reduces high-fat diet (HFD)-induced atherosclerosis. : Female New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits were immunized with a primary injection and four reminder doses (R1-R4) of IrP (irrelevant peptide) or P3 conjugated to the carrier.

Background Obesity and atrial fibrillation (AF) frequently coexist and independently increase mortality. We sought to assess the association between obesity and adverse events in patients receiving oral anticoagulants for AF. Methods and Results Consecutive AF outpatients receiving anticoagulant agents (both vitamin K antagonists and direct oral anticoagulants) were recruited into the FANTASIIA (Atrial fibrillation: influence of the level and type of anticoagulation on the incidence of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke) registry.

Background Many patients with severe aortic stenosis are referred late with advanced symptoms or inappropriately denied intervention. The objective was to investigate whether a structured communication to referring physicians (facilitated data relay) might improve the rate and timeliness of intervention. Methods and Results A prospective registry of consecutive patients with severe aortic stenosis at 23 centers in 9 European countries with transcatheter as well as surgical aortic valve replacement being available was performed.

Probiotics can modulate gut microbiota, intestinal permeability, and immune response and could therefore improve cognitive dysfunction and help avoid potential consequences, such as falls, in patients with cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a multistrain probiotic on cognitive function, risk of falls, and inflammatory response in patients with cirrhosis. Consecutive outpatients with cirrhosis and cognitive dysfunction (defined by a Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score [PHES] < -4) and/or falls in the previous year were randomized to receive either a sachet of a high-concentration multistrain probiotic containing 450 billion bacteria twice daily for 12 weeks or placebo.
